Pretty much essential I think! There is so much "action" being lost with the standard lens.... in a confined space a wide angle lens will show a lot more floor space.... just ordered one and am going to continue with this hobby until I am the best indoor flyer in the world! (no other way to go!) I'm not anywhere near outdoor flight (yet) but would like to become a master of the indoor "small bird" flight (landing on a sixpence type stuff).... most of the promo vids of the indoor stuff are so pedestrian... I'd like to break the barriers and go the full mental retard "indoors".... flying (at speed) direct towards a priceless ornament (for example) and missing it by a whisker.... indoor flight CAN be exciting, just a case of pushing the boundaries

(no other way to go!) Hey Mike, what did you go for? I love the canon 10-22mm it's a fantastic lens with great colours (for my taste) and plenty sharp. Do you shoot canon/nikon/other? I agree, a wide lens is a pretty essential piece of kit. It can provide a very different perspective and opens a lot of new possibilities when you're feeling creative. Cheers.

I used to have an f2.8 24mm Cosina until some scroat broke into my car. This was in my 35mm film days; wide enough to capture the 'vista' but not so wide as to begin to suffer from the fish-eye look which I don't appreciate at all. the '24' is really good for wild flower shots giving both a close-up of the subject and plenty of context. As you say, Mike "so much "action"... lost with the standard lens". That Cosina was a beauty and bought second-hand IIRC for around 20 quid.
Now I'm in the DSLR world (Pentax) the widest I can go is at the wide end of my kit lens; the 18-55 zoom. In 35mm full frame terms 18mm is of course approx 28mm and it misses the mark by some degree... but I've spent enough on photography.
Having said that I couldn't resist a nice Pentax f3.5 135mm I saw on Ebay. Lucky enough to win it at a little under £27. Fixed focal length of course and have to use a semi auto method of exposure setting... but that doesn't scare me as I learned photography without TTL metering in any case.
Current lens collection:
Pentax AF kit lens 18-55mm Pentax 35-80mm (came with my Pentax P30 film camera) Miranda (Dixons own brand?) 28mm.... absolute rubbish. Pentax M 1.7 SMC 50mm.... totally fantastic and my favourite lens... takes pics of black cats in coal-hole without a flash Pentax f3.5 135mm .... not much done with this yet but looks promising Hoya f3.5 200mm Cosina f4.5 70-210mm
And a Vivitar 2x convertor
Still enjoying my (only!) 6MP Pentax K100D Super body. Going up to ,say, 12MP would allow a bit more flexibility when cropping hard but from the above list maybe only the f1.7 50mm Pentax would have the resolution to make the upgrade worthwhile.
Regards,
Derek

I bought a Samsung HD200 and ordered a 0.45X wide angle lens from Hong Kong at the same time.... Argos sent me a Samsung HD-300 by mistake so I am waiting for the HD-200 to arrive now... the lens is nothing fancy, just an el cheapo from Hong Kong (it says Made In Japan on it) I am currently using my Nikon P100 to shoot videos (it's probably better than the Samsung thing!) but do need a wide angle lens for the indoor stuff.

I went cheap-charley-compact while changing from analogue to digital. Out with the Minolta Dynax 7000 and the gubbind including several lenses. In with a Panasonic TZ3! It has a reasonable wide angle capability, half decent optical lens and physical zoom. Although pretty decent I've been getting pangs for something better mikeAs a general Samsung fan I was intrigued by your choice but couldn't find any information on the models you stated. Full size or smaller ( 4/3 ? ).

Although pretty decent I've been getting pangs for something better When I did the film to digital hop I first used a Vivitar compact... not a good lens at all, and it only lasted a year before totally locking up; dead as a dodo. Next I went for one of the less expensive Nikon Coolpix something-or-others. I still have this and use it often... great lens, optical zoom, and not a bad JPEG 'engine'. Does movies too... good enough for family-type records of birthdays etc. Derek
