I'm still shaking, Paddy. It scared the shite out of me.
I saw mackerel jumping about so I took a 5 or 6 foot telescopic rod with a sliding float and frozen sand eel for bait. The rod fits in a suitcase you see.
Now I know why the mackerel were jumping - this bugger was going for them.
All I wanted was a few mackerel but when this thing took the bait, my first thought was it was a submarine. I couldn't actually stop it and it emptied my reel so it ran out a very long way.
I had to just let it run because there's no way my rod could pull it in. Then it stopped dead. So I reeled in very slowly and when it realised I was pulling, it went of sideways like a maniac and then actually swam towards me, so I reeled like a madman!!
Then it turned around and ran out again by which time, my reel was down to extremely little line. I could see the black of the spool.
I walked back to the wall for safety and maybe a bit of a whimper 'cos I didn't like it - I was only after mackerel.
Eventually, I managed to very gingerly get it in and actually had it at the bottom of the sea wall when I realised I couldn't lift it. It was on it's side and I was lifting it's head. You wouldn't believe the size of it's mouth!!! Bloody massive gape.
I tried to keep calm but I really didn't know what I was going to do with it.
Eventually, I think it got pissed off with me and had another spasm, and thank gawd, it broke my line.
I was so relieved!!
Anyway, the copter's flying again like nothing happened to it.
I'm still shaking ... ;-)

Sounds like it was at least 11lb in weight I know in devon and down south they use a live sandeel with a 1oz gripless weight, cast out and reel in slowly to catch the bass but i am against live baiting (cruel and unneccecery) Never caught a bass myself, we get them just a couple of miles up the road in crosby (hall lane) and they are mostly school bass (under 5lb) I was a cod fisherman mostly, and used to go on spring tides (9 meter tides in the mersey) the pull off the tide was heavy but productive . If your after mackrel you can use a tiny slither of mackrel or the inside of a crisp packet (shiney metalic), you can even catch them scavegeng mini tuna off bare shiney hooks paddy

Looking at this thing on it's side, it was between 3 and 4 foot long. Definitely a long step!
The mouth was almost big enough for my head. Bloody horrible thing.
I only got a telescopic rod and float out because it was handy when I saw the mackerel and I'd have been in the wife's good books if I brought a few mackerel In for breakfast.
All I got in the end were garfish and they aren't that nice to eat.
I really couldn't control the bass. I've also never seen my reel stripped of line so fast. Boy, the can swim fast.
I wouldn't have minded so much if I had used a proper sea rod but this thing I had was a toy (in yer case) rod!! It just isn't built to cast any weight and certainly not take on fish that size.
I seriously thought I'd copped a submarine.
Here's the pisser - last weekend, there was the Guernsey bass fishing competition and the prize was 10,000 pounds!!! Entry just a tenner!!
I'd love to have won that with a toy rod. (mind you, there was nothing bad at the tackle end)
The speed of it shocked me plus the sheer strength of it.
I never expected a mackerel to nearly pull me in!!
First time a fisherman has actually wanted to lose a fish!!

You'll get allsorts up here casting out from the harbour (with a spinner)..... my favourite is a tasmanian devil and the most "common" catch is either mackerel, sea salmon or pollock. If you beach cast with fresh lugs then you will pick up a lot of flatfish..... if you go out in a boat you will hook ling, cod, haddock..... stick a few feathers on and you will pick up tons of mackerel..... It's too easy up here and more a case of sling your hook and catch a random fish that is happening by..... I stopped fishing as I don't really like "eating" fish and the last time I threw 5 cods in the bin I realised that what I was doing wasn't right for me OR the fish I'll net the occasional salmon if I have visitors coming (a rare event) but mostly my rods are gathering dust these days.

That would be funny winning that comp on a spinning rod and reel ;D "man catches tope on spinning rod" The thing with bass is they are fierce predators and dont give up a fight easily, they are also good at throwing themselves off the hook Also watch out for the spikey dorsal fin when handling Thing is, if you went there fully kitted out to catch bass, you would probably catch a thornback ray I have a 10ft abu garcia beachcaster/pier rod that splits in half that is an ideal holiday rod (i have a 12ft identical one too) and used to use it on piers or for a bit of snaggy rock fishing. Funny enough my youngest had been sea fishing for the first time and asked me could i take him next time, i said ok and now i have to get everything out of the loft and re line the spools and make new rigs to put in my rig wallet (i havent fished for 8 and a half years) so i think i will be fishing the mersey in minus zero temps on a full moon for them cod paddy

Thats another reason i stopped, the guilt started to play on my mind "was that cod i caught looking for food for its young" or "will it be missed by its family", i know fish are solitary beasts but you dont know what goes on underwater do you. I remember chartering a boat out of whitby about 12 years a go for me and some workmates, one of the lads caught a big whitting that had swallowed the hook, so the skippers mate who was a total wanker ripped the hook out with force cos he could not get the hook out and threw the fish overboard (should of cut the line down to the hook) just totatly no need whatsoever I thought to myself "i hope yer fu@@in boat sinks with you in it you fat c@@t" Also when you see people who go sail/swordfishing abroad I have no problem with them catching them it,s just when the fish is trussed or gaffed up with rope round it and the fisherman gets his photo taken with a big grin on his face I just take a couple of cod home to eat and everything else goes back. paddy

For beach fishing, Paddy, I have one of those really long rods and I can't for the life if me remember it's name. I think Salwater. It's something like 15 foot for whimps like me to be able to hit the French with 6 ounces of lead. On piers, I just use a couple of 9 or 10 foot uptide rods, from the same company.
The beach rod is a pretty bright blue. Great for casting. It almost doubles itself up and the unfolds with an almighty flick when you give it some stick.
That bass would have been beached with that. Much more powerful. Trouble with little thin rods like the one I use when I'm away is that big fish can just run rings around you like that bass did.

I have Fireline on most of my reels and paired with a good reel, I have pulled 12 kilo carps up with a 7 foot pole It took almost an hour, but it was a great fight.. I was fishing for roaches, so it was ultralight gear..

I can't remember the make but it's 18 pound breaking strain, very thin for it's strength and is black. I then have a tapered shock leader so I can give it some welly when I cast.
While I was away (I'm back now, just) I was using a 5 foot roach type rod that is telescopic and is literally about 1 foot 6 inches in the case.
It had a little fresh water cheap reel with 9 pound line only.
Now imagine the shock when a 3 foot bass shot off and stripped my reel until I could see the black of the reel in the centre.
It went out into the centre of the harbour so fast that I couldn't do a thing.
It shouldn't have been there in any case. I was only trying to catch mackerel.
Imagine a roach bigger than 10 pounds on a roach rod.
I'm a nervous wreck. (not a ship wreck though or else I'd be doing the conger eel)

I had almost the same experience with that carp it was 86 CM and 12 kilos, so it was quite a catch on my roachset, but that set is a good set with a good rod (Daiwa samurai) and reel (Shimano power aero), both very good things, so it was a whole other thing than your set i think, a carp is also a slow fish compared to the predators like the bass.. A fish you should try to get a hold of is grey mullets, that is an awesome fish and I am told they are only second to bonefish in the power to weight ratio.. Going to Bahamas and catch bonefish is one of my dreams.

Mullets are hard to catch as there lips are soft and tear easily I use drenan greased weasel (60lb) shockleader and for using trace making, it is really good stuff and knots easily, need 60lb for casting 6oz grip weights in the mersey because it has the second fastest tide run (bristol channel fastest) in the world (so im told ). If you want good strong hooks for the shore, then you wont get better than mustad viking (imo) paddy

But holy moley they can strip a reel from line in an instant..

Mike,
Have you bought any spare E-Flite batteries? I'm wondering if you know a cheap supplier. I'm seeing £6-£7 each on them.

Brilliant. Thanks Mike. Following the submarine dipping of one of my Bladez helis, I had to open it up and put a new battery in. They're not changeable. Stuck in crap with double sided tape. However for the MCX2, I'm going to buy a load of them so I'm not forever charging!! Drives you mad after a while!! Ian

Well Dave, I was thinking of attaching a lead weight to a copter, sending it out to see, drop the weight and return the copter so I don't have to cast with a bloody great big 16 foot rod!! I'm getting old. I could use a boat with a drop hatch on the back but it's not really sea worthy so that's out. So my 'copters are used to bomb my child and chase her around the house. The other use is to to annoy other peoples' dogs. I did have one with a rocket launcher on it too!! I think my next project will be a spaceship so I can spook people. Seriously, they're great fun and more difficult to fly than the real thing imo!! One cough and that's a hurricane for them. Ian

Hi Ian, What about a more productive co-operation? - fit 'copter with an RC controlled dumping facility for dropping ground bait more accurately near the float than you can throw. Then, when you get really skilled (like some royal priinces ;D ) you could trail a hook behind the 'egg beater' which would pick up the line when you had a bite and you could then try to land the fish by chopper-copter . If you could get a friend to video it whilst you're doing it that would be 'ace' - make you world wide famous on 'youtube', like that talking dog - somebody say "Sausages?" I'll not charge for the idea - feel free ;D ;D ;D . Dave.
