Skipping around the web I today came across pictures of my first headphones that ever purchased, courtesy of an ebay seller. This is the first time I have seen their like. I can't remember how much they cost but thought they were OK at the time. That was until I bought a Marantz CD75TB and had some Sennheiser HD414SL lobbed in as a freebie. I then discovered that the Ross really were rather crappy despite being "Professional Series" So, What were your first headphones that you purchased as a separate item?

Bang & Olufsen Form 2: These 'phones seem to be still available! I must be a least 15 years ago since I've bought them. Perhaps even 18 years ago. I don't remember exactly... I'm surprised that they are still available (to say the least). I have not only good memories about the B&O Form 2's. Comfort was bad for longer listening sessions, the pressure of the supra-aural earcups was to much and the headband was hardly sticking on the head (at least with hairs, I had more hairs back then). The design is appealing initially, but if you look closer and wear them too, then you see that it is quite impractical. The price was a plain rip-off. No doubt. Of course, I'd like to give them a try with my current possibilites. I did not have a headphone amplifier back then and the source was a crappy walkman-style device or a boom box. These have perhaps some modding potential, but back then, I did not even think of modding headphones. This have been my second headphones, IMO the first real headphones I've had. The MB Quart Quartphone 200's: After that, the next step was a real classic. The Sennheiser HD580 Precision's: I still have the QP200's and the HD580's.

The first real good sounding headphone had to be when my father bought the Celestion 15. Of course, this was provided your neck was muscle enough to wear them. Sorry, I wasn't in the army yet. But it will blow away any HP then in ANY price category. Still is now. Btw, why are you guys so obsessed with HPs? You getting a lot of police visits to your houses?

My 1st serious cans were the AKG K501 I still have and use almost everyday, they still areprefered in many areas like refinement, comfort and soundstage. I got into HPs quite late, didn't need them until I got married.

mine were listening to my Dad's AKG K-340 back in 1979/1980 www.preservationsound.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/AKG_K340.pdfI now have 3 pairs, 2 for modding and playing around with, connected up to x-cans, and one unused pair still in the original box that I bought in Germany around 1992 for 100 deutschmarks, must get them out of storage and have a listen, I hope they still work OK

I couldn't remember the model number, but looking around the web for some pictures I'm pretty sure they were Sennheiser HD 410 SL: Mine had bright yellow foam pads and I remember them sounding pretty good. They're might still kicking around somewhere, probably tucked away in a box in my parents attic.

If we ignore the Eagle headphones I bought in the 60s (a brand familiar to British audio fans in that era) it would have to be these: Sennheiser HD495 Very hard to drive, and I subsequently bought others which were more sensitive (such as the awful Sennheiser HD 212 Pro), but these are still good to listen to, very musical and very comfortable. EDIT: Sorry, I forgot I'd got these back in the 70s. I remember vividly stitching some real leather covers for the ear-pads; they still work but are a faff because they need to be driven by speaker outputs.

My first decent headphones were the AKG K60, which I bought in the late 1960's. I used these with my Tandberg 3320-X tape recorder Next were the Sennheiser HD 420 Various changes over the years. My current open cans are the Sennheiser HD 800

Some B&O Form 2 that was used with my Akai walkman, both turned out to be not very long lived after looking great to my teenage self. The Form 2 had the signal wire behind the diaphram go, and I got lucky when a local electrical shop had some £50 Technics marked up for £15. My first pair of good phones that lasted were Senn HD420SL, Repaired the cable many times and eventually moved to something like HD450, when they died to HD580, replaced worn out 580 with HD600. Tried HD650 and grado 125i along the way, selling each after a month or two. These days I'd probably look to HiFiman as a similar but better alternative to the Senns. Great website with old 'phone pics headphones.warzone.org/

My first headphones are a pair of Beyerdynamic DT550. They have lost the ear cups and the headband tensioner but still work fine. Years ago I attempted to make them closed back rather than open as you can see from the pic. When I auditioned them in the shop it was completely silent with no background noise. I thought they were brilliant. I soon found out that when my wife was watching television and I was listening to music they let every sound in and out which defeated the whole object. The sound deadening pads I used helped but was not the answer. These may well be my next project for upgrade if anybody knows anything about them? I now use Sennheiser HD 428 closed back headphones which are cheap and cheerful but do the job. Attachments:
