After a very hot and early spring here in the UK things then went downhill. A very dry but cool summer with little prolonged sunshine. The veggy harvest is therefore running late. The good news is that the tomatoes and beans are tasting good; don't know if there is time for the Cayenne chilis to ripen. Last year there was a very early frost, cold enough to kill the plants in the poly-tunnel; we lost a large number of tomatoes. I am hoping for a long and mild Autumn so that we get most of the produce picked and eaten this time around. Tonight is roast shoulder of welsh lamb including a handsome portion of runner beans (naturally) and home made mint sauce. It's the fault of the jet stream y'know. Derek p.s. Tomato varieties are Amoroso F1 (the red ones) and Sungella (yellow / orange)

EXTREMELY fertile up here for things like weeds, flowers, potatoes, peas, turnips etc. etc. but my indoor chile plant just refuses to flower. I'm going to whack it under the sun lamp and see if it responds to that...

It's been a strange year here for gardening. Started off with a fabulously early and hot spring - then followed by a serious lack of rain and sunshine. So it's been dry and cloudy and in my experience the stuff I grow appreciates both water AND light. I have been throwing water at all the plants (no hose restrictions here) but it's just been too damned dull.
First batch of runner beans got away to a good start because of the fine early weather. But something ate them.. so a batch 2 was needed.
Cherries and rasberries were very good. And strawberries too; a long cropping season this year and I have a a particular variety in the poly-tunnel which is still giving 4 or 5 fruits a day... not exactly a meal's worth but a nice little treat.
I have an excellent thorn-less blackberry which is cropping like crazy. Huge fruits and tons of them. The blackbirds are very appreciative.
I have some purple sprouting broccoli plants which should sprout in March - they're not looking too god but a bit of extra care may help.
I experimented with aubergine again - but no good. Just haven't had enough sunshine for those babes. The chili crop is / will be poor. Good sized fruit but not many of them.. again it's the lack of good sunshine.
