2nd post (1st page) modified to show how to configure Foobar to play from RAM.

Thanks, Javier.
Thought I'd done this ages ago, but reading your amended post above I see I forgot a '000', so was running from RAM at 250KB, rather than 250MB!

John, if you played some tiny MP3 (10"?) files there is a chance you did in fact play from RAM ;D

...and that would explain why I've experienced some ticks and stuttering!

That would be more related to the post-buffer rather than the pre-buffer I'm afraid. What do you have it set at? (File -> Preferences -> Playback -> Output -> Buffer length ) 300ms should be OK but I'm using W7 on a quite powerful PC not Vista.

Of course.
150ms. (Vista 32-bit, 3GB memory, HDD nearly full: I'm always having to juggle files onto an external HDD, but there's usually around 10GB free. It's partly Vista bloat and also many, many FLACs!)

If I were in your situation I'd seriously consider either replacing the main drive for a bigger one or, if you are using a single drive for everything, adding a second drive and move all non OS/apps files to the new unit. HDDs start losing performance very quicly when filled over 50% of their capacity. Running a good defragging app like Defraggler (its free and can be downloaded at www.defraggler.com) can help keep up the drive's speed.

New ASIO plugin 2.0 released (1st post in 1st page updated)
Version 2.0 highlights:
* Channel mapping configuration no longer required to use with popular soundcards - you can still configure alternate channel mappings if you need to. * Worked around all documented compatibility issues with various ASIO drivers. * Improved stability when dealing with buggy ASIO drivers.

I got an error messge from foobar when I tried to update to this new ASIO plugin automatically: said I couldn't update:
"Could not load component "foo_out_asio.zip": Another instance of this component already exists in your foobar2000 application folder; you need to remove it manually before you can update this component automatically."
I then tried to install the new ASIO dll (only) by overwriting the new dll over the one in the foobar components folder, but foobar wouldn't run. I kept the old ASIO and have copied that over the new, and foobar is back to its previous state.

John, in my experience it is best to install plugins the official way, that is, from the preferences page click install and point it to the downloaded zip. If you used the updated button, run it again. A new version 2.0.3 has been uploaded because some users experienced similar problems to yours. There is a thread at Hydrogen audio discussing this issue ( www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=92442&st=0) The new plugin uses a dll like 1.2.7 did but also needs a .exe file named ASIOhost64.exe or ASIOhost32.exe depending on OS version. I suggest you run the update again and see if it works now, else stay on 1.2.7 though the new version works much better with the Musiland.

That's exactly what I did the first time! I got this error message:
Could not load component "foo_out_asio.zip": Another instance of this component already exists in your foobar2000 application folder; you need to remove it manually before you can update this component automatically.
The version I downloaded was already the latest version:
2.0.3, released on 2011-12-18
Tried downloading again, same as before.

Javier
Where's there's a will, there's a way. Renamed the asio.dll file in foobar's components folder, then did automatic update, re-started foobar: tickety-boo, all OK.
Thanks for sharing about the update.

I have updated my 2 main PCs, one the old manual way and the other using autoupdate and in both cases it worked 1st time but I'm running W7 on both machines. With this new version I get much better results when playing 44.1KHz based HD files (88.2 or 176.4) and the Musiland 02, with the previous verion if I left Foobar on pause for long while playing any of those it used give me trouble that has been fixed with this latest version. I'll try it soon with the office PC (Xonar D2X with latest Unixonar 1.50 drivers) and see if it also works OK.

It seems a few Xonar users (DS, DG, DX, D2X, ST, STX, etc.) had problems with previous versions, this last update basically is just a "bug fix" release for them.

It has been a while since I last posted any info on the DVD-A and SACD plugins so here is a little update:
DVD-A now up to 0.4.11 from 0.4.9:
Version 0.4.11 - SACD-R detection fixed.
Version 0.4.10 - ATS_XX_X.AOB open error fixed.
SACD up to 0.5.3 from 0.4.5:
Version 0.5.3 - DSD to PCM converter double precision modes added.
Version 0.5.2 - DSDIFF DSD file reader fixed.
Version 0.5.1 - Multitrack DSDIFF file playback fixed.
Version 0.5.0 - DSF track playback added.
Version 0.4.9 - DSD Autodetection removed. Better switching between DSD and PCM tracks.
Version 0.4.8 - Mytek Stereo 192-DSD DAC is believed to be supported.
Version 0.4.7 - Experimental: dCS DSD-over-PCM playback methods supported.
Version 0.4.6 - Experimental: ASIO proxy driver for DSD direct playback.
Version 0.4.5 - Editable ID3 tags for DSDIFF files implemented.
Version 0.4.4 - Experimental: Multitrack DSDIFF files with Marker and ID3 chunks.
Version 0.4.3 - Experimental: Exact search for DSDIFF files with DST Sound Index chunk added.
Version 0.4.2 - Experimental: Lookup table based DST decoder design.
The is also a new plugin for creating a RAM disk to play files from but IMHO the old prebuffering method works better.

Buenos Noches Javier, I've just clicked on the 'Get Updates' button for both the above updates only to receive eachtime a message advising me that no updates are available at this time? Wot's up doc? Dave.

Dave neither of those plugins is "official" so Foobar does not check for them. You will have to update them manually should you want to get the latest version. The SACD one needs an extra step as it now includes a dll for DSD ASIO proxying to compliant DACs like the Mytek 192 DSD. It is easy though.

The instructions for installing the plugins (in case you have forgotten )are on page #1 of this thread, the important difference is now the SACD plugin includes two dll's that have to be removed from the zip file before installing normally, if they are not removed you'll get "no entry point" error. The dll's to be removed are: foo_dsd_asio.dll foo_dsd_asio_x64.dll
