The biggest limiting factor tbh is the room that you put them into. A top notch system can sound truly awful in the wrong type of room unless you want to eliminate all of the reflections in the room!! I think Alex puts has foam on the wall behind his speakers and I know of one company that produces 'dead' reflectors that I think involves the use of a mirror in order to work out exactly where to place the 'reflectors' in order to deaden the room. It was something I was interested in a long time ago and actually did use mirrors to work out where reflections from the speaker could occur. It worked, but then again, it may have been just me expecting it to work. However, if you want really good sound, it's worth having a music room that is set up properly rather than a domestic front room type of situation which compromises the sound a great deal. For me - headphones provide a better environment than the front room!! They're not picking up room reflections. (But they do add their own colourations, but at least you get to choose what flavour of colouration you like) For me, high end speakers excel at imaging more than anything. They can be truly frightening, but it's big money for something that the wife thinks is perhaps a load of tosh. (Speakers are just speakers - ' why not shove them behind the sofa' kind of thing) I have seen really nice speakers sitting on a wooden floor, behind books on shelves, behind the sofa, up at ceiling level firing at you - so those speakers are just not doing their job properly. Even a cheap speaker set up well does a pretty good job, but most people aren't prepared to go to those lengths for their music. Another cracker I've seen is huge floorstanders in a sitting room that was 12 by 10 feet. It was an awful sound but I daren't say. Just like TV's, something we tend not to consider is how far away we intend to listen and in many UK front rooms, near field monitors would do tbh and the nasties that you could get from large speakers can be eliminated in one go!! X3 In Singapore, we have some crazy hifi nuts putting Quad 63 or Duntech in their BEDROOMs measuring just about 15ft by 10ft when I was quite into hifi more than 15 years ago. There was just not enough breathing space for such speakers to perform their best and they sounded poorly. Like Ian had said, I dared not say so on audition at these "rich" friend places. Extremely highend speakers must be matched with a proper sound room like a studio to certain IEC stds to match. Just like Porsche, Ferrari and Lambo are meant to be in bigger countries where there are more wider roads to wack the throttles for a good adrenalin flow. Those cars in Singapore have not much space to show off. Been there and done that. These cars are meant to be wacked and love to be wacked.
