i fancy the cowon j3as my primary device other than my computer, i dont have a formal audio system, i would love to have a full high fidelity setup, but, i just don't have the time nor funding to put one together, so i enjoy the extreemly high quality audio (for a dap.) that i havent heard in anything else of its nature and feather weight. i went from an ipod touch, to a cowon j3, and i was first, immediatly suprised how light it was, and second blown away by the sound quality, it pairs whit the hd681's well too, and hopefully the dt990's when i get around to ordering them

I love the IPod touch but don't like ITunes. I hate the iron grip it has on your files.
However, the Touch isn't the best for sound tbh. It's ok. The Sansa Clip + out does it as far as sound goes IMO. The Cowons are also excellent.
For me though, it's not just music. I can go on Internet (like I am now), listen to dab, watch tv, listen to and easily update podcasts, (iTunes is excellent for that), download and watch films, play poxy games, use some fairly good apps.
The Touch does a lot more than play music. For pure music, the Classic from line out dock to an amp is pretty good.

I'd go further than that and say that I don't like to have any Apple software on my PC. There's no denying that Apple make some natty devices, but I'm not at all keen on their software. I installed Quicktime, which is truly awful, but I wanted to watch a .mov file. I then notice other things, like Bonjour that run automatically on system boot, using memory and system resources. When I look up what Bonjour is, it's a little program that sits there looking to discover your Apple devices, like your iPad, iPhone etc. Now that's all well and good if you actually have any, but it's just a waste of system resources if you don't and you don't expect it to be installed with a movie player. I removed QuickTime, and all the other crap and have not installed any Apple software since. It must be said that Apple is not alone in this. Adobe is also bad for installing little background services that start automatically on boot up. These sit there checking for updates, but also use memory and CPU and slow down your PC boot up time, albeit only marginally. I use CCLeaner to disable unnecessary programs and prevent them starting at boot. With regard to MP3 players, I currently have an aging Sony, which sounds quite nice, and works OK, but also ties you in to using a specific app for managing files, SonicStage, which is pretty awful. I've been looking at replacements and one that quite appeals is the SamsungYP-R1 , it supposed to sound good and you can manage files with Windows Explorer, it lacks an expansion slot however.

I quite liked the old Samsung players. They kind of acted as an IPod foil and had a good healthy output.
One the the IPod and Sanza does nicely - they don't hiss on 16 ohm iem's. I think the Samsungs had a little when I used them.

Not an issue for me, I don't like IEMs. The ones I've tried sounded nice enough, but I just don't like the sensation of having something jammed in my ears.

Yes, it does take a bit if getting used to. 32 ohms is a better option for them IMO anyway.
They're pretty powerful. At least the ones I had were. I think they were YP's or something like that. I really liked them and they were really solidly built.
There's a new Sanza on the way as well. I think it's called the Sansa Clip Zip. I must admit, this new Clip + that I have does sound very good.
All I'm using at the moment while I'm away is the IPod Touch and Sansa with 32 gig card. (into Senn ie8 or Portapro)
It's fine and I'm never stuck for some pretty good listening.

Ian i wont argue you there, the sanza clip+ sounds great, i just dont have one. henceforth why i prefer the j3
