Bang on the money Ian! Not just me then.....and yes, I'm also surprised that this is not review parameter or even a specification eg. optimum perceived FR at xxdB (maybe too subjective) I also find this for the relationship between two volume controls, eg the laptop and the headphone amp. Again, different for every computer/amp combo. Definitely, in fact her preference over all other types. These HisoundAudio PAA-1s have gone down a storm with her. pays your money and takes your choice! I was coming from the Senny PX200 (MKI), which are a little "boxey" sounding in comparison but have more presence in the HFs. If this was mine (the Fuze+), ( and I have to say I'm very impressed with it and really like the UI so may even get one for myself! ) I fear I would be going down the high-end earphones route that you alluded to earlier in the thread Chris

Tell you what Chris, listen to the file I sent you, loud on Portapro. It really brings out the bass punch in spite of mp3 gremlins!
I'm currently listening to it on ie8 and boy, it has some kick on the drums. It's a bit of fun. He's playing to a click track and he just doesn't let it inhibit him at all in the recording!!
Currently doing that live as well over here!!! Did it live outside with the stage facing the sea a couple of nights ago as a test and back this weekend. Funking great- the town stopped to listen - it was so loud.
You have the pre live tracks mixed down so we took off the 'live' parts and were left with backings and click tracks to put the live stuff over.
It's been put into the middle to give the singer a break and he just pops on to put in the vocal parts. Gives me a chance to go nutty!!!

Ian, I thought you were leading up the garden path for minute there. I'll explain; I had only heard that file through a good amp and the Senny 600 and 560, bass galore and plenty of control/drive/clarity from the amp. I then listened straight into the Porta Pros, Blerghhhhhh. Really muddy and blurred bass along with that reluctant high range. Shove an amp in quick, anything! All I had here was my NG27 which has line in as well. Massive change, everything clicked back into focus, bass dug deep and there was also more HF coming through. This got me to thinking, so I connected up the Fuze+ via the line in of the NG27. Brilliant, a very similar improvement was heard this way too. I would conclude that the Fuze+ DOES need an amp to really shine, as does the Porta Pro. I have to say I'm very impressed with this little player and am very tempted to get one for myself too, with something like a Neco.

sorry Chris. I wouldn't try to mislead you. I thought you had a portable amp. You're quite right, the Porta does improve with more behind it. In fact it does tidy up quite a bit. I guess it needs quite a bit of current to shine. The ie8 seem to go on a fart and a prayer. Just about to go on and do a repeat of it.
If you get a Sanza for yourself, I'd look into a quality iem. I know they're serious money but if you want good portable sound, then it's an amp and proper headphone or a quality iem that can work with small amounts of power. The Sansas seem to have a quiet output so they work well with very sensitive iem's.
Whoops ...... gorra go.

Claus I just put your query on Google and the instruction manual says it supports Audiobooks. Syd Most players say that they do so, but many of them is just able to play the format (mp3), the problem arises when the files last 30 minutes or more and it starts from the beginning of the files, when started, which makes it a PITA when I want to continue from where I was.. But maybe I should just take a chance and if it fails, it still makes a nice little player for work..

I reckon Ian will know the answer.
He has wav images at album length on his Clip.
I have noticed that the Fuze+ will pick up from where it was but as Claus said that's with MP3 files.
I'm going to give Flac a go on the Fuze+ to see if it fares better than wav for tagging.

Ian,
Have you heard of or even have Big Pig albums?
Give "Bonk" a whirl, they're a percussion driven outfit from Oz (finished now I think) and the recordings have some serious kick.
If you don't have a decent copy let me know when you are back home and I'll waz a file or two over to you.

Just found Big Pig on Spotify, Chris. I'll give it a go today.
Claus, if you turn the Clip + off while mp3 is playing, it remembers your position and continues where you stopped. So I guess it will bookmark where you stop on audiobooks.
The Clip is quite an amazing little device for sound. I use a watch strap that Mike kindly sent me, and run the iem lead up my sleeve. It's so convenient that way and the sound is incredibly good. Battery life isn't fantastic but as long as it gets me through the day, I leave it charging and it's ready the next day.
I may look into the new Sanza. I read a good review and I really like the clip. It seems people either love or hate the Fuze +!!
Let's hope you get a working one soon, Mike.

Ooh er......
Listening to that Big Pig album Chris. It is rather nice. Real instruments as well as electronic.
It kind of takes me back to 80's stuff. 'Fine Thing' has an HL feel going on!! 'Breakaway - Pepper Mix' brings back memories too. The use of that pedal note in the bass and everyone humming around one chord. Minimalism!!!!!
Oz turns out some nice bands. I heard a very unusual band live a couple of years ago in a very small venue (a famous music pub in Putney) and they were fantastic. I can't even remember their name!! They used electronics and digeridoos and I was hooked. The guy playing the digeridoos had it growling and making this high pitched sound as well, but the rhythms he played were amazing. He must have been breathing through his bum. Double breathing is quite amazing!!
Big Pig - another one I'll have to buy now!!! ;-)

I got myself a Clip+ last week and it is a nice little player.
But I do not think it is that powerfull, it has been set to live in North America so it is louder than when I got it, but when I compare it to my other Players Cowon D2 and Hisound Studio it is clearly the weakling among those.. But seeing that I only use it with IEMs it has enough power for my needs.. It is also the "worst", worst not meaning bad, the others are just better..
It is better (and smaller) than my previous player for work (Meizu SL 8) and does hiss less between tracks and that is what it is going to replace, so a good buy, no doubt there..
What did surprice me was the earbuds, my wife came to me and said "do you want to be happy", I replied "sure", was hoping for a BJ, but she handed me some earbuds instead *sigh* and made me listen to them and they were very bad, it was the enclosed set from the Clip they were just so lousy that it was hard to believe, it is beyond me why they put in SO bad phones, when the player is so nice ??
I know that phones costs money, but I can buy a pair of paa-1 for about 20 $ and they are awesome, why not enclose a pair of just almost ½good phones like the Ipod does ??
I really like the fact that it is NOT a touchscreen, I like the on/off switch is an on/off switch instead of pressing play for a long time.. It will take a bit to get used to the center button, not being the menu/home button, but I am sure than when I do get used to the UI it will be easy to operate..
I could not care less about the screen, if it tells me which number is playing I am a happy camper, so it is just the way I prefer it..
It is also a great feature that it can be expanded and that the SDcard shows up toogether with the rest of the music..
All in all a recomendable player.. But the enclosed phone are my only grief, so all is well in Denmark..
Ian@ Do you wear the player as a watch ?? or on the upperarm.. If worn as a watch I would imagine lots of noise from the cable..

Hi Claus,
I find it better than the Ipods tbh. It has a warmer signature and more presence in the bass region.
The setting that I have is 'Rest of the World' as opposed to 'Europe'. If you set it to 'Europe' it's hopeless.
I'm using Sennheiser ie8's with them which really give out a big sound in comparison to anything else I have or a Klipsch X8 or X10 if I want something perhaps a little more accurate tonally.
The Clip+ sounds huge with the ie8. The radio is awful.
Mike introduced me to a wrist strap that is intended for use with the Ipod Nano. I bought a couple more and wear the Clip on my wrist. I run the cable up the inside of my sleeve, dowm the back (or front) and come out at the neck of my shirt to my ears.
It's very discreet that way and there are no trailing wires. When I'm not listening, I either dangle the buds from my shirt or stick them in a breast pocket.
Not one person noticed I was listening to music for two weeks on Herm or Guernsey and funnily enough, no-one commented on the strange wrist watch!!

I managed to claw the Fuze+ back off the wife for a couple of days and also rate it very highly. Comparing to memories of the kids iPod Nano I'd say it has a far superior balance on SQ. I've set the Fuze+ up so that all wifeys mp3s are on one card and my Flacs are on the other Leaving the on board memory free for whatever. What I have decided is that I don't like are the Porta Pros! (they've been running solid for a week on various kit) Good bass with an amp and decent MR but that curtailed HF becomes more annoying with greater head-time, even in the sweetest-spot. I'm not sure whether to try mods or move them on to sprog 1. The PAA-1, although having a slight "boxyness" to voices, is on balance quite superior, which coming from someone who normally dislikes earbuds and IEMs is quite a revalation! Wifey agrees too Without going to the heady heights of IE8s is there a reasonbly priced alternative? (The Jays "portapro beater" thread seems to infer they have even less HF )

I've had the Fuze + for a few days now and do prefer the sound over both the Ipod G5 / 30GB and the Ipod Nano... it has a bit more vibrancy about it. The "navigation" system can be a tad erratic but I appear to be getting to grips with it... wish I'd got the white one now as the black is a bit of a grease magnet but, hey, the black was on offer @ £40 so not complaining. Pretty pissed off as I had a 16GB card for it and cannot for the life of me find it..... I think I must have slotted it into the faulty Fuze and sent it back with the damned card in it Oh well.... not the first £12 I've flushed down the toilet How "exactly" do you guys get albums onto it? Ian, the ones you sent me (the MP3 albums) all go on as seperate albums but my "WAV" albums all go on as unknown artists.... All of my Yello albums are one BIG long "unknown" album... actually pretty good as it plays all the tracks arse over tit and one minute you can be listening to a track from The Eye and the next a track from Stella. Putting photos on it is a waste of time (IMHO) as the screen is too small.... You'd have to be VERY desperate to need to watch videos on it too and I certainly wouldn't want to read a "book" on it so all this is pretty unnecessary for my requirements but I am sure there are people out there who use it as some form of masturbation aid Surprisingly good with the Superlux HD-661, perfect partners I would say... they are very sensitive and you can go pretty loud with just the Fuze (unamped).... gloss black Fuze + gloss black HD-661.... looks like they were made for each other

Mike,
Do it all manually by creating folders and naming the files.
That's what I do on the Clip +, so I presume that the Fuze works the same way?
I agree about the sound in comparison to the Ipod. It's a bit more 'fruity' sounding. Used only the Clip+ for the past two weeks and no trouble whatsoever.
Chris, the Portapro has more extension than the V-Jays, although the V-Jays have a kind of 'clatter' in the lower treble making them sound open, but as soon as you change to a Portapro, you do notice that it is more refined than the V-Jays. (for me at least)
It was Frans who pointed it oout to me and then I did a direct comparison. He was dead right, so I'm not sure that the V-Jay is the way for you.
PM me your address if you like and I'll send you a present. (Just give me time to find something) - as long as you can stand an iem in your ears!! Do you need two ... one for the wife and one for you?
The small headphone market is a difficult area to get good sound imo.

Can I hear it? I've turned the volume to max. Can you hear it now? ;D Ian, That is a very kind and generous offer, unfortunately neither I nor wifey can wear in ear jobbies. Many thanks, Chris Mike, The Fuze+ cannot identify the tags on wavs. You need to either dump albums as a single file or navigate them using the "Folders" tab from the main menu. The best way though, if you want proper track order, naming and album artwork is to use Flac files instead. All but the artwork will be automatically tagged, you then add the artwork, if wanted, manually.

Aha!
After Ians comments of cutting holes in the centre of the foams of the Portapros I got to thinking, this is obviously not just me thinking the PPs are seriously lacking and mods must be out there.
So, after a bit of searching the "Kramer mod" seems to be in the offing. Having seen this I seem to remember Miguel showing a similar mod?
So, some time soon it will be drills-at-dawn with the PPs. I can't lose, I dislike them now so even if I bogged the FR completely it really doesn't matter.

That's the spirit Chris.
TBH, I think it's a difficult part of the market and only improves when you get into serious iem's if you can. There aren't really many good quality little headphones around.
I'm interested in the Beyer, but it's too expensive.

Sennheiser PX200 II, a very impressive little headphone... Oh yes. I forgot that one. I've found that one difficult to get on with though - getting a seal on my ears and its slightly sharp FR. I know that a lot of people reckon it though. I do have one and it's better than the first version!! Ian
