I thought BOSE had already invented the perfect speaker. ;D Personally I don't think the perfect speaker will ever be invented. It would have to have close to 0 gram mass, act linear, have perfect phase relation, must not have distortion, should not have 1 or more resonance points, no crossover (the one shown arguably doesn't have these qualities) and have many, many more trades that are physically impossible to make. And, like Ian often says,... will it sound good if it has perfect qualities ? And I might add... will it sound good in any room under any acoustic setting (room reflections) Closest thing would be a fullrange plasma speaker perhaps. Let's dream on for a while and be happy with what we have in our listening room.

The "Stereolith" speakers aren't perfect. But the concept is exceptional.
I find the concept quite appealing. And the prices aren't bad for handmade speakers and amps.
The amps he sells use MOSFET's.
I guess the Stereolith concept could be interesting for rooms where normal surround speaker setups can't be placed. It's also quite simple since there's only one speaker box (with optional subwoofer).
The inventor of the "Stereolith" concept is now 66 years old and he is searching people that will continue his work.
It's not another story about mediocre speakers with a doubtful concept. He already had a big success selling his speakers in in the 80's. Studer-Revox has sold his speakers and has licensed his technology.

You could buy an used Bose 901 Series 2 though 5 used. A pair with the equalizer can be had for around $200 USD, granted some/all the drivers may need to have the surrounds replace. The kits for the surrounds are not expensive at about $40 per unit so total cost of the surround kit if you have to replace the surround in all 9 drivers of each speaker would be $80 USD. Good luck.

BOSE and 'perfect speaker' can't be used in the same sentence. unless it was meant to be a sarcastic remark... which I intended it to be. Never heard one decent sounding BOSE speaker in my entire life.
I have nothing aginst dr. Amar G Bose personally (really I don't) and think he is a great guy (have my reasons)... Just don't like the overpriced bad sounding speakers and other stuff he sells.
(I apologise to all people I just offended that love BOSE speakers, what can I say... tastes differ)

Well, I will be a "voice of a different" tune. Bose speakers do not sound bad but are priced too high. If you buy a used Bose speaker in good shape you would be surprised how good they sound specially if properly amp since the 901 w/ the equalizer need a lot of power.
For the record I love my TimeWindows 1A speakers which I have had since the mid 1980's.

Funnily enough, Bose make an 'in ear' bud (not strictly iem) which isn't bad at all. Again, expensive, but comfortable for people not happy with iem's and provides (imo) a very respectable sound. It needs quite a lot to drive it as well which is curious for a portable device.
I always associate Bose with TV speakers and audio visual type stuff which is a totally different market to us 'purists'!!
I've heard some good 'impact' stuff on films from Bose speakers but not sure about them being what I'd call a 'hi fi' sound.
Looks good too.

I thought these were made by DCM corp (not BOSE ?) I heard the 901's (repaired some guy's equalizer) with very powerfull amps (2x 300W) with expensive gear at a very high volume and the guy was in total 'wow' and kept telling me how good it sounded (properly mounted in the corners of the room). Well ... indeed tastes differ ... a LOT. ;D a lot of BOOOM (not even really deep) and the rest was poor quality. The professional stuff IMO is much 'better' than the overpriced home stuff. I was always impressed by their huge bass 'canon'. never ever once was I impressed by 301, 601, 901, the milk cartons and other recent stuff. But they do have a wide following cult and sell loads of stuff so they must be doing something right. In the perfect speaker category.. they are not.

The "Stereolith" speakers are manufactured in Switzerland. Maybe I should try to get a date in their showroom next time I have holidays?
I don't have the money to buy the "Stereolith" stuff though, that is...
After having so much trouble with a former neighbour accusing me to make "noise", I'm also not exactly in the mood to buy speakers. Looking back, it was great to say "What noise? From the headphones? Funk off!"

They were made by DCM. I have the little brother to those called the QED, which uses similar technology. They have a great reputation for their imaging qualities. They used Philips drivers too.

Hah, perfect speaker using speaker cones? How to? Just talk of one ideal speaker factor omni directional and that will already fall flat in the face. The ribbon or electrostatic or planar will be closer. The plasma will be close to ideal when you can stand O3 and chemical reaction. Laser speaker, if possible, will be ideal.

For the record I love my TimeWindows 1A speakers which I have had since the mid 1980's. The tower DCM time window is a rather soft, vague and mellow sounding speakers. I guess your love of tubes make it a rather obvious choice. Not for me though.
