I have always wondered why headphone enthusiasts that like smaller pieces of equipment that can be moved easily into or out of an office or used on a desktop and so forth do not look at some of the current or past car audio deck offerings?
They run on 12/24VDC, Are available as a dedicated source without internal amplifier, many support USB / MP3 capability, Measurements on high end units are simply fantastic... Some have decent processing ability depending on the unit and so on with others having amazing processing ability, parametric EQ's and so forth.
As you can tell, I come from a world of high end audio, previously owning two stores many years back and also used to compete at different levels so I am well versed in the products.
I just do not see many pieces of equipment that meet my needs of being very small, very high performance and have multiple audio format options other than select teac units or others that are commanding a huge pricetag. Also high end car units are amazingly reliable as they are designed for harsh environments.
Anyways just a thought. Thinking about picking up an older alpine 7949 or 9835 for a project like this in a slick, small custom case.

Hahaaah! No, not just you I used to install car units and their speakers in kitchens and bedside tables! (inspired by those hotel jobbies) I had one rigged in my garage back in the UK. They work perfectly, I was even considering a really high end set up at one stage but we emigrated first!

I've never thought of using car audio equipment (and I have NO car). But it sounds REALLY interesting!
I'd like to hear more. Please keep us posted!
