What with all this great weather, the DIYA has slipped right down the list of priorities!! We had our first BBQ of 2011 last night. I modded the Weber with a replacement gas grill temp gauge (from Home Depot). It's a highly recommended mod, as you can see exactly what the cooking temp is doing as you open and close the vents. The menu was simple (chicken, bangers, salad), but excellent. Then we lit the chiminea and drank some beer!!

I took a mini cooker out into the garden last weekend and we had a 'fresco' lunch. Beautiful in the south of UK last weekend and I'm luck in that my garden is on the South Downs and has a very long distance view so plenty to look at. Then ........... ramblers started to appear about half a mile away with binoculars. I think some of them wondered how I'd got there with a cooker!! I'm also a bit strange in that I have bird calls on my Touch so I can sit there like a lazy basket, calling birds. I got bombed by some chaffinches for doing that!! Good job I didn't do a bird of prey one. I have a buzzard living at the bottom of the garden and he worries me a bit. A few years back, in Cornwall, my wife was bombed by a Peregrine who must have thought her hair flying around in the wind was a rabbit and it dropped at a helluva speed. We didn't see it, but heard it do a fly past, very close to our heads, so it must have realised that her head wasn't a rabbit!! Ian

I don't get the "barbecue" concept..... eating outdoors surrounded by wasps, bees, flies and other insects.... erm, I would rather eat "indoors" with a knife and fork and a plate I used to live next door to a really annoying bastard who spent most of the summer in his back garden cooking burgers and sausages on a damned barbecue.... one of those things with wheels on it..... I don't think any of them in that family had ever "seen" a vegetable (let alone eaten one), they lived off cheap burgers and sausages..... He had built one of those disgusting wooden "podium" things and they would all sit there eating their burgers and sausages until sunset.... not a pretty sight looking over the fence and seeing 4 fat bastards sitting there sporting "shorts", white socks and trainers... whoever invented "decking" should be shot, nothing worse than seeing a group of people sitting on their "decking" with the obligatory "glass of wine"..... Anyways, glad you enjoyed your barbecue John

What is a "decking"? Oh! and fat bastards are cool since we get many thing cheaper than thin bastards. For example we pay the same for more fabric (pants, shirts, etc) we also pay less per pound to fly.

That is especially obnoxious looking decking. I don't know what the purpose of decking is. It's noisy as heck, looks ugly and it's more garden gone

Even worse when people put it in their "front" garden.... you walk down the road and come across a "family" sitting 5 feet in the air eating a "bucket" of chicken..... I don't see the point in it either, it's pug ugly and about as useful as a "conservatory" or an "awning".... even worse when they fit solar "decking" lights which illuminate the bloody thing at night. The ultimate in poor taste..... decking AND a conservatory

Ah, BBQ, I can have it all year long in Singapore. Usually at the seaside or open ground or by the pool sides. Btw, you guys BBQ with stoves? I prefer the old fashion way of charcoals. It somewhat taste better. Arrgggghhh, not another round of subjectivity. Ok, Frans, you give your best technical specs for the best BBQ, ok?

Flamethrower - perfect for getting briquets to light!! Nothing better than chewing the fat round the chiminea after a good BBQ! Your neighbours look to be about 10 miles away from your photos, Mike!

But why flamethrower? Wouldn't this be better and taste better. It's for free as well when tied to the lamb.
