It's the end of the day, and you have over an hours drive home. You are hungry and want to see your family and relax a bit.
But the twunt in front of you, on a clear day with dry roads, is doing 45mph on a country A road (60mph limit). Why??
We are on a straight bit now, good visibility, but no chance to get past. He brakes. Why?? nothing coming the other way, no magic fairies or dragons in the road. Strange.
Coming up to a gentle corner, no reason for a normal person to brake. He does, down to 25mph. Twunt. I'm driving well back from him now, as he seems a bit random.
Driving into a village now. 30mph limit. I slow down. He carries on at 45mph. Good grief.
Past the village now, he accelerates up to 50mph, and then slows back down to 40. What a £ucktard!! Can't he at least achieve the speed limit?
Repeat for the next hour, 3 or 4 times a week.
Thank god for Radio 4 and some decent music in the car, or I'd be quite stressed.

I come across this same driver at least once a week Will, the idiot who has never had an accident but caused hundreds, have to live with them i am sorry to say, because they will never be pulled over and read the riot act by the boys in blue will they!!. Oh no its me that gets pulled over after overtaking them on a nice empty stretch of road with nobody coming the other way at 10mph over the speed limit.

He used to live here, he must have moved to GB after I retired, to find someone else to annoy Syd

That one really gets on my nerves, given the oportunity I will quite happily drive along "A" roads at 60mph, or more, but I will always slow to the speed limit through villages.
And what is it about Mazda MX5s? They look like a sports car, but I've yet to see one going faster than 45mph.

Glad to see that I'm not the only one who suffers from these wazzocks! Mind you, there is a plus side. When you make the appropriate sacrifices to the god of traffic, and he reveals a suitable passing place, you can zip past and that mobile chicane, and he becomes a dot in the rear view mirror quite quickly! Sorry to hear you go caught, Mick. I did once as well, doing 34 in a 30, at 7.20am on a Sunday morning

Aggggh, the temptation to bop the copper one while smiling sweetly! I've been done twice in UK, fully deserved though 96 and 94 on the M5 and A30 respectively Once here too, I entered an inactive roadworks zone, instead of being sure to drop the 40kmh or so before entering, I just let the speed die down gradually (down hill), TOO LATE LADDY, GOTCHA! That was before they started the points system here so just a fine. These have increased massively here (government income required), is the UK similar?

And in Florida we have the old farts who insist on driving in the fast lane on a 4 lane highway at 45-50 mph, they can really try your patience.
Good thing is they just passed a law making it illegal to drive in the fast lane at less that the speed limit. Here's hoping the Sherrif's boys & State troopers start ticketing them.

Bill Same problem here, although I think the police can use other traffic laws to fine them. The problem is that fixed bloody cameras are useless in curbing such behaviour. We need a more visible police presence.I was driving from my place to a nearby main road a couple of weekends back, and noticed a police car parked on the left side of the road just before making my right hand turn into the main road. Ther was a bloody cop hiding behind a telegraph pole, pointing his radar gun up the hill ! That kind of crap is pure revenue raising ! Alex

I may soon be there.
Just had my photo taken doing 71 mph on a dual carriageway. Apparently contrary to the national limit there was a 60 mph sign somewhere. I'm going back to look !!. I drive alot and I'm sick of lower speed limits with camera. If I was on 9 points I'd be eratic too.

Speed Limits, hmmmmm!! Especially on motorways, total waste of time in my opinion. I use motorways a lot, when traffic congestion permits most vehicles are doing 80mph+, fine i say, as long as nobody is driving like an idiot and keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front, not always the case i must admit. If your not doing 80mph then your usually doing a walking pace, crawling along in the congestion. Quicker we adopt the German way of doing things the better. I use there roads especially the Autobahns at least twice a year. Most of there motorways have no speed restrictions, some have variable restrictions depending on traffic loading, how sensible is that!!. Even when road works are present speed seldom drops below 70mph(110kmph). None of the frustration of driving miles at 50mph or less without spotting a road worker actually working, that`s a very rare sight, one exception being the M25 widening project in progress at the present time. I have travelled thousands of miles through Germany and spent many a happy hour at speeds around twice our limit, feeling perfectly safe amongst the other drivers(some faster, some slower) without any problems at all, and have only seen one major accident so far, on the other carriageway in heavy rain. I have seen many accidents here in perfect driving conditions. Drive sensibly and and as fast as conditions allow, both traffic and weather. If the police stopped more of the kind of driver that is implied in the topic of this thread, instead of the ones that are JUST EXCEEDING THE SPEED LIMIT, BUT DRIVING PERFECTLY SAFELY, the roads would be safer, and we might all get where we want to be quicker, and a little less frustrated. I know that there are many who will not agree with the above, and who stick to the required speed limit at all times(yer right!!) but the above is based on fact as i have experienced, and not by some bureaucrat trying to raise some funds in a local government office somewhere. And by the way my youngest son is a police officer, not in traffic i am pleased to say, at least not at the moment, this might change of course, if the same bureaucrat above thinks the coffers are getting too low and extra finances are required. Oh dear!! come to think of it, he probably will be, looking at how this country is heading at the moment. Mick. PS. Spoke to soon, traffic as from 7th March

Visited Germany just over a year ago and noticed how good the lane discipline was - no wonder they enjoy more generous speed limits. British drivers are wazzocks in general.
Consider a frequently used method of joining a british motorway. First note that the fastest speed of the oncoming traffic will be in the region of 70 to 90 mph (dont tell anyone). Then observe that the slowest traffic, lorries etc, will be doing no less than 56 mph.
What does the twat in his Metro joining the motorway consider an appropriate speed? Thirty f'in six. Thirty F'IN' F'IN SIX !!!! And they creep out, gingerly, so as not to cause a fuss. And everyone has to hop out a lane to ensure the safety of the twat joining the motoray at 30 F'In SIX... give me strength. And if it's raining he'll be doing it even more slowly....

Derek Rumble Absolutely, could not agree more, this is a common practise by some drivers in this area, no prior judgement of motorway speed at all. I don`t profess to be a perfect driver far from it, made a few boo-boos over the years, none of them resulting in an accident as of yet, but i do try to be considerate, and forward thinking whilst playing with the traffic. Mick.

Perhaps some of these hesitant types have almost been cleaned up, and abused previously by some twat driving like a bat out of hell ? It's much easier to judge your entry speed when the oncoming traffic is more disciplined, and some stupid twats don't exceed the speed limit by >50% ?
Alex
P.S. I may be 72 , but I don't hold up traffic, and more often than not, "bend" the speed limits, but not excessively. I'm probably on borrowed time before I get a speeding ticket, but it will almost certainly be for no more than 10KMs over the limit. (Hopefully!)

Only in years Alex. I don't see you as 72. Your mind and humour is much younger than the years.

Mick. I find if I approach the Motorway at something a little faster than the oncoming cars then it's easy to touch the brakes and lose a bit of speed so that you can blend in seamlessly. And yep, it doesn't happen to me often - but sometimes I get that.... 'hmm, I was lucky to get away with that' moment. derek

I'd love to join this thread but the "sheriff" banned me from driving for 4 years (get my licence back next February) so I'll wait until next February before I comment

We are plagued in our area with the "safe" driver. It seems to me that there are some that should not be behind the wheel. From the way they drive they have no concept of what driving actually is, apart from propelling the car forwards. They appear to have no connection with the vehicle and are probably shit scared of their own inadequacies. Nevertheless they insist on *ucking up everyone elses journey. I like the bit where they drop to 20mph in 30 zone and might decide to increase speed to the "safe" limit.
What they don't realise and would never ever be aware of is that the speedo is likely to be 10% slow at best.

The same drivers are also more than likely to leave more than a car's space between them and the car in front at traffic lights too. ( not meaning to be racist, but Asian drivers are among the worst offenders here) Just a few of them doing that, combined with them being slow to move off, means that many people have to wait for a second change of the lights to get through ! It's completely avoidable, and bloody annoying to needlessly spend another couple of minutes at lights twiddling your thumbs !

You need a larger truck type horn installed in your car to wake them up.

I had some dual air horns in a car some years ago (I think I still have them somewhere) Scared the shit out of me, let alone anyone on the pavement/road/under the car etc etc.

I have actually clocked the time required to get from A to B with various styles of driving. I have a trip of 100km that I take every Wednesday (mostly autobahn). Driving like a maniac, I need 1 hour, have various braking and accelleration phases. If I set the cruise control to 100KM/Hour (60 MPH), I need 8 minutes more. I have tracked this for over a year. The gas consumption difference is quite substantial. The car is quieter at 100 (less road noise to disturb the music).
I don't think that the solution is to create speed requirements. Erratic behaviour is bad news. Driving under the limit can be an intelligent choice however.

^ funy post! I recently took a trip and at 65 mph the vehicle got 27.8 mpg. When I took the speed to 70 mph the vehicle got under 25 mpg. As you said the car is also quieter.

I got fined and 3 points for doing 36mph on a big road that looks like a 40mph road and it was in fact 30.
The sun was straight into my face and I never saw the blasted sign.
Ever since then, I've developed a fear of cops with cameras. I'm always unsure of whether I'm on or over the limit when they take the picture.
Thing is, if I reach 12 points, are they really going to ban me for doing mostly 36 in 30mph areas? What really annoys me is the nutter who drives at 70 in a 30mph and gets away with it!!!
Seriously, I actually fear traffic cops now.
Ian
