Bought one of these and the AD said it had a slight cosmetic defect..... cost £175 (normal price £600).....
Well, it arrived today and I was expecting a pretty big flaw in the finish..... it was absolutely PERFECT all over apart from a 1/4 inch black spot on the front panel (which is actually in the grain of the wood).... awesome
I bought it to supplement the other Acoustic Energy sub I have in the workshop and the difference with two subs is HUGE....both are rated at 200 watts RMS and can put out some serious bass.... it was good with just the one but with two it is so much better... the sound is more balanced and, dare I state the obvious, more meaty!
It's a pretty basic system (I wouldn't spend a lot of money on an "outdoors" type rig) but it really does pack one helluva punch for the money.
Marantz CD52MKll SE into a NAD C326 BEE amp driving two home made cabinets (wharfedale 8 inch mid/Bass and wharfedale tweeters / simple inline musicap filter).... I also have a TEAC T-H300 tuner with roof mounted FM aerial....
I think the weak link may well be my trusty old home made (wharfedale drivers) speakers and will be looking for a pair of el cheapo (good quality) speakers to replace them....
Was never the idea to pay "money" for the workshop system... most of it I got off a local skip for free but I am spending more and more time out there and the acoustics are SUPERB..... it's solid concrete with a very high "cathedral type" ceiling..... the more time I spend out there the more I realise that it is the perfect "venue" for good (loud) music..... sure, it's cold in the Winter, is crawling with insects in the summer (not the usual place you'd fit half decent gear) but the acoustics are the best I have ever heard.... beats "plasterboard" partitions hands down.... no room boom (standing waves) the bass waves have so many places to go.... it's a beautiful sound
Sooo.... on a hunt now for some "rugged", el cheapo, monitors..... I may see if that Acoustic Energy outlet on ebay has anything suitable.... I just cannot believe the massive improvement the extra "sub" has brought about... it has taken the sonics to a new dimension (will take some photos of the "listening room" and subs tomorrow)... these things are WELL WORTH £175 IMO!
Even comes with a remote control to adjust the volume and crossover level (motorized pots).... full internal bracing... real wood veneer... very nice for the money Also has a rubber roll surround (the other one I have has a foam surround).... rubber is not as good as foam for a bass driver but, unlike foam, rubber does not perish so I feel a lot happier with the rubber roll surround.... it will withstand all temperatures / conditions so perfect for outdoor workshop duty.
Just thought I'd mention these AE subs, @ £175 they are a steal
