Yes, some of them even think they can hear differences between .wav files with identical check sums ! I resemble that......................... I am using a Szekeres MOSFET Amp and it does just fine. The 701 earpads need to be about 1cm thinner to get the bass right. Then it is sonically seamless from thump to squeal!

Can you remind me how you achieved that?
Cheers.

Can you remind me how you achieved that? Cheers. Pull them off... wash them in warm, soapy water, rinse well... hang them out to dry. This will soften them and shave a couple off mm off them. Mike.

I've done the pad wash thing and tried my best to compress them a little. I guess I managed to lose approx. 3 or 4mm all around. I forgot to note which way the pads orientate , worked it out in the end I have a marginal increase in bass weight, without any perceived differences elsewhere. I saw a mod for increased bass on the other place and wondered if any bods had tried it here? t'other place

It's easy to fit foam, remove foam, drill holes, fill holes, fit tape, remove tape etc. but everything you do will alter the balance of the sound... the K-701 has got a reputation as a crystal clear (revealing), pretty neutral headphone.... you do realise that if you "up" the bass (by fiddling with the headphones) you are going to change the whole character of them. If you really want to get the bass out of the AKG (bass that is already there) then it's more of an amp thing. Ian reports good results with the K-701 / Panda combo.

Yep, (or maybe "yup")
I fully understand what you're saying and I'm in on the A class build.
It was just because it is an easy, reversable, mod. I'll try it for fun and see how I go, as a possible stop gap between now and having an amp that can drive them properly.

Excessive sibilance, harsh??? I have listened the "fairy headphone" K701 for 6 hours out of the box and can't say anything like this. ..imho...If you want some sibilance and harshness you should go for n' unmodded HD681 to see what's real sibilince is:! These are the best things that i put on my ears till now.
