OK - uploads complete. Anyone wanting to hear how the M-Audio card performs at 24/96 compared with 16/44.1 (albeit NOT with a vinyl dub, sorry) then PM me for the links. sandyk & xtrprof, I have already sent you both a message. Anyone else? Derek Derek Do you have the 44.1 version BEFORE conversion to .flac ? Personally, I think it is a mistake for people to convert .wav files to .flac format for storage, then have them converted back again "on the fly" for playback. It is an entirely different matter when the conversion to .flac is done using professional gear as Linn Records and HD TRacks do. Even then, with a typical PC, the recovered .wav files will have lost a little in the translation due to processor load and PSU noise variation due to the HDD activity etc.. Alex

Yes I understand your dissatisfaction with FLAC - I will upload the 44/1 file in wav format for you.

Derek,
PM sent.
Do you only use Adobe for capture, or others too?

Derek, PM sent. Do only use Adobe for capture, or others too? Chris Chris and other interested parties. PLEASE compare both 44.1 versions.i.e. the .flac version, and the .wav version that the .flac version was converted from. I admit that I am tired, and ready for bed, and expected only minor differences between both these versions. One version sounded boring to me, the other version made me sit up and take notice ! Of course, our resident sceptic from The Netherlands would never believe this, and Faudrei would also be unlikely to accept it either ? Alex

On Dereks first link to the .wav file I'm having trouble playing it back with WMP. I get "An audio codec is needed to play this file. To determine if this codec is available to download from the Web, click Web Help." not a lot of help on the end of clicking. If I play it via a converter (wav in, wav out) it's fine ? ALL other .wav files I have are fine. any ideas gladly received...

Use the .flac front end for decoding. They are best saved to the destination folder that you intend playing them from. The last file that Derek uploaded was at my request the original .wav file before he converted it to .flac for the original upload. Derek converted the original 24/96 .wav file to .flac because he was unable to upload files of that size (100mB limit) Alex P.S. I played mine using Creative media Source Player 5. Foobar will also give quite good playback results.

Derek, PM sent. Do you only use Adobe for capture, or others too? Chris I usually use Adobe Audition for capture but I do use Audacity as well. I like Audition because you have a real time frequency analysis which I find fascinating! And occasionally useful too. Derek

I default to Foobar, which is free and simple. I dislike WMP's interface. It's too hung up on playlists which I have never gotten to grips with. My music is sorted by, and stored in directories (sorry, Folders!) not in playlists. This file, remember, was first recorded at the lowly 24/48 format because it was destined for playing via my Philips Streamium (which now sounds even better now that I have upgraded my wireless router). Derek CORRECT! Others do though, like Nero and those aforementioned. Though I do like the playlist feature, I have all the files stored logically on USB pens, then create the lists in WMP. For example, I have a specific list for background music appropriate in the restaurant, another of recently obtained stuff etc. Having no experience of Foobar, which I've just DL'd to play with later. Are there any truly useful add-ons I should take straight off? eg some may take the ABX....

Oops! I didn't think my post could be read the opposite way to that meant....
What I failed to say was; I've DL'd Foobar as is but none of the extra add-ons from the list available. Are any of these worthwhile?

Might be worth while getting the ASIO plug-in or if using Vista/W7 the wasapi - quite a few muso's have been know to prefer ape over flac (look up Monkeys Audio) - there is a foobar plug-in for that too. I have just been listening to a needle drop I did of an old Ventures LP a while back, played back via the firewire m-audio/spdif -> my latest DAC rebuild - sounds very similar to direct from vinyl - rather surprised (pleasantly) by that - previously it had lagged badly - must have done something right in the DAC. If you wanted I could probably mail a CDR for you to compare (I used "click repair" on it - but not heavily) - there are still one or two glitches from scratches/dings on the record.

@ tg, thanks for the ASIO tip (I run XP) and the offer of the CDR. Don't worry about that one, I'll be using ears and original as my guide for quality. If you have any general tips on getting best results I'd be glad to hear them. @ Chong, ref. the Yes track, there are a couple of 90125 LPs of note up for grabs on ebay; 180g "Masterdisk"

I run the phono stage direct into the m-audio, then faff about setting the levels to avoid clipping. That will vary from recording to recording so a bit of a pain. Might be worth trying a high res capture first and then a 16/44 and comparing the downsampled high res to the 16/44 to see if it seems worthwhile to you. (capturing at hi res that is) IIRC I captured at 24/96 then ran click repair then down sampled to CD. Do try click repair, it is very configurable, though the defaults seem effective and fairly benign. It creates a new file so will not damage your original and you can compare and see if you like the results or not.

Tony The local PC magazines often have suitable LP Ripping programs on their cover CDs , that can do that automatically. e.g. lrsetup.exe I have seen a report that when you double click it, it happens so quickly, that you don't think it has installed. Then restart the computer.

Alex, my feeling is that any dynamic automatic level setting that attempts to adjust levels "on the fly"whilst recording will alter the dynamic range of the original recording, admittedly setting too low a level to obviate this will reduce the signal to noise ratio. It still remains to play the entire record to ascertain/set the peak levels, as you well know, clipping in the digital domain is "not a good thing" unlike a bit of tape saturation like we all did to enhance replay volume on cassettes. I am aware that LP ripper can do this but was unaware of any freeware apps. Probably because I decided that if I want to listen to records, then that is what I do, so any needledrops I do are for the exercise of it.
