Next week, I'm picking up a new car and it has a spare hole!! It's a 3.5 jack plug for Ipods so ..... Does anyone know of a company who makes Ipod to 3.5 stereo plugs at a normal price? Qables does them about 4 inches long for about £10 per foot. It's a piece of wire!! Plus a plug and a dock connector. Why are these things sold for too much money? I don't trust some of the guys that make them either - I had one guy make me some cables a couple of years ago and quite a cost. One was wired backwards so left/right was wrong and they also don't work with the new generation Nano. After 6 months, the one that was wired correctly just fell apart. The Ipod connector split and I had to superglue it back together. I know that they're fiddly to solder but does anyone know of a supplier who provides a lead? (Preferably one that doesn't fall apart) Or do I have to buy one of those nasty roll up leads that break after you blow over them? bloomin' rip off merchants!!!

Cheers Mick. That's a better price. Oh, just checked - it's a jack to jack. I'm after an Ipod dock connection to jack. The Ipod connectors are a bugger to solder 'cos they're tiny!! Much better quality from the bottom of the Classic Mick. (Via that daft plug) Logic3 make a really cheap nasty one that rolls up but if you keep rolloing/unrolling them, they break so I pulled mine apart to keep the wire straight. There must be all of two strands of copper in the wire. I have a posh(ish) hand made one but not long enough for the car.

aha .... that's the one.
I'll ask them if they can do a short and a long one for the car.
Thanks Chaz.

I'm also interested in Dock-Connector-to-Mini-Jack cables.
I got a pointer in an other thread that you can buy such cables cheap from ebay. The dealers are mostly from HongKong and I'm in doubt it's top-quality what they sell.
If anyone finds a good source for such cables and they are of good quality for a reasonable price, please let me know.
I need at least one for my iPod Touch. I'd like to use it with a portable Neco amp.

Cheers Paddy. Once the price gets to around £30 I feel a bit reticent for a couple of plugs and a 12" piece of wire. It's a pity that the makers don't make one with ordinary copper and plugs without the hype and sell it at a sensible price. There seems to be a lack of quality connectors unless you're willing to fork out quite a lot of dosh for what it is.

Apple is somewhat responsible for this: If you want to use the DockConnector then you'll have to pay royalty fees to Apple for using it. Same with the MagSafe connector of MacBooks. Maybe we should try those cheap cables from HongKong?! See this for a couple of examples: shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=car+dock+connector&_sacat=0&_sop=2&_odkw=dock+connector&_osacat=0&bkBtn=&_trksid=p3286.m270.l1313

A dockconnecter is not expensive in any way, so Apple is not really to blame here..
Meieraudio also make those docks at about 40 €, I got an ALO cryo thing that was very expensive 100 £ or there about..
I do not know if he still makes them but there is a guy on headfi "turbo" who makes them also, but can not remember the price..
Belkin also makes one..

But what you really need Ian, is a Cowon, then you can use the 3,5-->3,5 thing.. Trouble is Claus, I have about 60 Gig of ATRAC music and another load of films working with Ipods let alone all the podcasts etc that I take away with me so changing to a Cowon would be very expensive in terms of music for me. I have 5 Ipods, 2 Samsung MP3 players and a couple of Irivers, (H120 and H140) full up. Converting all the ATRAC files would be a pain. (And a drop in quality) I quite like ATRAC and Apple Lossless. They work really well. Output from the Ipod isn't at all bad once you get out from the dock connector and the headphone out serves its purpose if you put something fairly good on it. I use Klipsch IEM's and AT buds mobile, but for hotels/travelling, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to films, plays, Itunes downloads, Amazon downlaods and podcasts which I tend to use very heavily when away. I don't really want to change for the sake of a lead!!

Ian I know 30 quid is a lot for what it is, but i know it will sound better than anything twice it,s price, all my cables are kimber, i have had cables by other manafacturers and they are not a patch on the kimber ones. btw i am not connected to russ in any way, i just wanted to put you on to a good cable, after this cable is burnt in it will sound a million times better. paddy

Hi Paddy,
do they sell also outside UK? I'm living in Switzerland and I'm in doubt that I find a similar cable here easily.
30£ is a lot, but it's still in a payable range. If the quality is better than with standard ones, then the 30£ could be spent well.
Kimber cables are usually in astronomic prices regions. 30£ isn't astronomic at all.
I'd like to find also a solution in between the Kimber cable from russ and the ultra-cheap HongKong offerings.

Ian, Another ATRAC user! My favoured digital recording format, though mine is all on MD. I still prefer swapping out 1Gb discs to plugging into a PC and re-sorting the contents of an iPod, plus I don't get on with the iTunes programme. Stuff synchronising and losing half your music, simple drag and drop in both directions for me. Paddy, I was surprised to see ANY kimber for only £30! If I used iPod I'd give that a punt if not for reservations of Russ's profit margins I've heard a lot of their ICs and 'speaker cables and though good, I always deemed them massively over priced but thats just my own opinion of course. I guess we all develop our own favourites and decide if they are worth the asking price.

Trouble is Claus, I have about 60 Gig of ATRAC music Does an Ipod play Atrac ? I thougth that only the Sonys used that format. If the music/podcasts is DRMfree a program like DBpower can convert it all in a couple of hours.. But I fully understand your reasons.. I got Kimbercables on some of my headphones and despite it being very stiff and user unfriendly, I am going to keep it, it just sounds better. So I am with Paddy on this one.

Sorry Claus AAC. It works well in lower bitrates compared to MP3.

I would second the Kimber Ipod cable. I actually bought mine new (there are some on ebay) and I've been more than pleased with it. I would also though second the comment about Kinber which though good cable does appear overpriced. I would also check out the Harmon Kardon docks specially for the car. It is 3 years since I got mine but it has been very very good.
