It looks solid enough Mike. In comparison to the Fiio ones, they're really good value at £10. The Fiios are about £6 or £7. Nothing like that. My Monkey's on the way now. I'll be a lot more careful next time!! Can't wait to get the V2 running again; just for the sake of a fuse!!! Colt, the Neco is solid state. No valves. Way better than a PA. As Mike says, built like a brick so does the job well and can take a good drop with no side effects. Ian

Doesn't it look weird, Chris? It reminds me of the flat Mission solid core speaker wire.
I find that I need different lengths of cable, depending on what I'm doing with the Ipod as well. Not many people make longer connections.
I was reading what you said about Itunes. I agree, it can be a very painful experience. I wish we could drag and drop onto Ipods. It would make life so much easier since Itunes does tend to take over when putting albums into order. If you get any labeling wrong you can have a helluva job sorting it out, where an album gets scattered because of those labels.
One nice touch with the Fiios is gold jack plugs and also gold dock connectors.
Ian

Ian, I've just edited in an ebay jobby that looks the part... I've never personally owned an iPod but have wrestled many times with the kids ones on iTunes. Many Anglo-Saxon expletives ensue during the process, travesty of a programme. The kids used to take the piss out of MDP portable, "what, only 1GB?!" Then they see me switch discs, replace music, edit lists blah, blah and their jaws hit the floor. Try and do that with your pile of excretia Nano 4. ( iTurd? ) I must admit the thought of 16GB or more on board is attractive, happily though, my requirement for portable music has waned to nearly nothing

Just curious as usual. Why do you guys take portable Hifi so seriously to go into "highend" portable equipments? Go home and the home system will blow the portable hifi away anytime. For me, an Iphone is already enough for a portable.

For me, it's like having close to the luxury of the sound I get at home when I'm away. Especially if I'm away for a week or more. Being able to use full sized (more comfortable) headphones as well.

Ian Yeah, good enough reason for that. For me, as I don't travel much, the Iphone or even the office computer audio will do. Just for the music and nothing to seriously be critical for. Anyway, the Iphone or even the Ipod is pretty good sounding already on uncompressed material. Yeah, sorry, no mp3 for me.

Holidays aside, for me it's a complete joy to lie in the sun in my garden and get some great sounds from my Sansa Clip+/Neco Mk.1 portable/Skytronics el cheapos. Of course it all sounds much better in the house with a Mini APE or Naim CDS as source and Headline amp/Sennheiser HD600s, but I've yet to find a way of getting the sun to shine in my living room.

in my case i have a caravan in Cornwall (will be down again in under 2 weeks) theres nothing better than a bbq plus some amazing sounds beneath the stars im thinking the 8610 is maybe just telling me the truth about some recordings (where others sound amazing i.e clean highs strong but not unbalanced lows and that sense of space (try sinatra at the sands cd) the sflo2 is a nice dap and i love the drag and drop on it (battery life is rubbish) also the twin wolfson dacs sound excellent imho but i also wonder about the line out as its an active and not passive design so its already going through an opamp before it hits the necos (although graham slee told me most line outs are active )

The last thing we want is to have a play to death all we want on the bus or mrt or even our car. There are girls to watch!

Yes, but you can watch them while listening to 'Funk in Time'. Or in Mike's case, you can watch the trees go by with some Vaughan Williams as a backdrop..... I just play any old shite. Ian

...or I could move to Libya. That's a case for closed headphones or even noise canceling headphones. At least they'd have to be bomb proof and you might be very mobile .... as in running. Ian

AD823 is a dual opamp.... the NECO requires two single opamps.
