Ian, mine is due to land tomorrow (good company that audio affair lot / keep you updated) so no point asking you to crack the seal and post pics....... Man..... give it "at least" a week before doing a comparo.... everything sounds like turd fresh out of the wrapper...... I'll let mine cook for a week before even commenting on the SQ. Mike. It wasn't a comparison as such more first impressions. The NAD is doing everything right in that not quite cooked way. You know that feeling you get when you listen to fresh kit and it's lacking a little bit everywhere in a balanced way rather than one place or other (or is it just me) and you just have that good feeling that everything is going to settle down nicely. Well that's how it sounds to me at the moment. I just feel like the NAD is going to settle down into something rather special for the money. Ian

Well.... mine has landed too Certainly a very well built piece of gear but she isn't making me tent (as yet) in the SQ dept. Seems very laid back, distant and pedestrian sounding at the moment (has played half a CD!) but, like Toad, I will give it a good opportunity to run in and hope it opens out a bit. If this IS the sonic signature then I'm not sure it will be suited to warm sounding valve amps, could well make the sound overly warm.... anyways "half" a CD is very early days, I'll leave her on loop overnight ( if you can do that / still to read the instructions ) BTW..... it DOES have the same guts as the £1300 M55! The boards have M55 stamped on them.... pics to follow

It IS a SMPS power supply populated with the world famous "Janghai" capacitors The board is a BREEZE to slot out (four screws) so mods will be a piece of cake I already have plans for the 400V / 100uF "Janghai".... I bought a job lot of top quality Nichicon 400V / 100uF and will use one of them in this position..... will replace the ceramics with Polyprops and the rest of the "Janghai's" with Panasonic NHG / FM / FC ;D Very well put together player and IDENTICAL to the £1500 M55 apart from the cage over the SMPS and the fancy metal enclosure covering the transport (and, of course, the fancy enclosure)...... £199 ? a FCK'n bargain if ever there was one!.... the SQ alone is £199 worth of anybody's money (I've listened to "3" CD's now ) ...... shit, and this thing also plays DVD's, SACD's, DVD-A's etc. etc. etc. ? Whoah! It's gonna be fun getting to grips with this beast

The £1500 NAD M55: The £199 T585 (RRP £800) Identical electronics..... just a bit more cosmetic Bling on the M55 Here are a few pics.... more to follow in the daylight: Seems a VERY good buy at £199....... I'm off to listen to the SACD of Dark Side Of The Moon and will report back. I also have The Who "Tommy" on SACD so will probably be up late listening to that in it's entirety too ;D BTW..... she is definitely starting to come onto song now.... I agree with Toad's initial "listen".... this could turn into something very special indeed

Had mine playing for 2hrs now hooked up to my usual Amp, and it sounds, how can i put this politely, way inferior to my reference player, still early days yet, have yet to try a DVD, so no comments on that yet, but beautifully made, and will hopefully get better when "burned in"

I've listened to few CDs on mine now too. It's certaing improving. It's not as "laid back and pedestrian" as it was yesterday. That really does describe what it sounded like Mike. It is settling down into a nice listen already though and as you say for 200 notes it's a bargain! I'm still not sure if it's going to catch my Arcam in the sonics department but it's closing the gap at a fair pace It's quite light isn't it. About half the weight of my Arcam but it feels well made. 8)

From past experience, and from what I'm hearing right this minute I think this will prove (in the long run) to be one helluva find @ £199 Let's remember guys..... it also plays DVD's (I'm no expert on PQ "picture quality") and SACD's / DVD-A.... a LOT to explore and I'd be interested on reading a review of it's "Picture" quality as well..... Toad, have you listened to a SACD on it yet? I'm going to fire up DSOTM a bit later on. Yes, it is a bit "light" compared to my (ageing) CD17KI but still a lot heavier than quite a lot of today's players..... remember, the PSU is SMPS so this reduces the weight a lot..... One thing's for sure..... it's definitely not a lemon and (from the tension on the screws) definitely not B grade stock..... Let's give it a week and see what we think then..... give her the opportunity to "form" and the electrons to establish a path.... it's way too early to form a conclusion. Mike.

I'll bung Norah Jones come away with me in. That's one of the few SACDs I've got and the only one I know intimately.
Will report back later or tomorrow.

Mick..... forget me, I'm thinking ahead..... enjoy your new purchase with 2 year warranty and let me know what you think of the "overall" performance / VFM once she's burnt in Mike.

The CD section of that SACD can sound almost identical to the SACD section when played through a high quality upsampling DAC. Some people then even prefer the CD. The CD appears to be from the same master as used for the SACD. Alex

Cool SACD seems a bit bland at the moment to say the least but often these universal players struggle with SACD. Still early days yet. With CDs it's doing nothing wrong it's just a bit bland at the moment and as you say Mike early impressions based on my experiences hint at good things to come. As I said last night "you just have that good feeling that everything is going to settle down nicely" well I have that good feeling anyway. Could be bollocks of course... time will tell Ian

The majority of those derived supplies in an SMPS are TUNED, and take into account capacitor characteristics for their operation. Alex
