Unfortunately tweeking my technics will have to go on hold.....
Just had to MOT the car and there is such a huge list of bits to do that i think i will have to get another car, really not worth repairing this one.
So time to listen to what i have and not look at new bits.

It will be in another class over the standard Technics. Just to get aquainted until $$ catched up .........

Right time to go through some back issues of hi-fi world and see what is said there. I think an arm upgrade is comming and have heard good things about the Rega RB301 and think that it should work better with a more hi-fi orientated cartridge. Does anyone have experience with a Audio Analogue Bellini pre amp? how good do you think the phono stage would be? Mine is an older version but i guess that the RIAA curves havnt changed much!! I am also going to try moving my deck further down my rack, although it is relativly solid it isnt perfect, this may help a little as well. I currently use a TNT audio flexy rack set onto a 30KG peice of granite so it is pretty solid! time to play....

To see how well isolated the deck is, stick a glass of water on it & watch for movement as you walk near it. You can even jump up & down if you want. Usual common sense applies, I don't want to take the blame for spilling water all over your beloved hi-fi equipment.

could use a half full bottle of water, with the top still on!
My hi-fi is in the loft, so i would guess there will be some vibrations

Tread resurrection!! but for anyone reading there has been a few changes.....
First I decided to have a look at the technics and see what could be done, I really like the design of the deck and felt investing a few quid into it would be worth it. So...
I have had a reconditioned tonearm from J7, mine felt very stiff. Jonny has stripped and rebuilt the arm, set up the bearings, threaded cardas cable through and added new external cable as well. I have cleaned and re-oiled the bearing, removed the pitch control, disabled the strobe and then built an external power supply to get the transformer out of the chassis. All in it has cost me £300, most of that being the tonearm. I have also added an Achromat to the platter.
So far everything is sounding a lot brighter and a lot more defined, im still running things in and am hoping to borrow a guage to get the calibration set again (have guessed a little). Im very happy so far, though as allways have a list of tweeks to carry out!
Would like to get the regulator updated, a relatively easy mod that makes sure the power to the deck is more than enough. And would like some better feet, but after that will let it sit and play for a while.
Though the Ortofon blue looks nice.....

Good to read a happy ending. How did you remove the pitch control?

I have took it out of commission by removing the connector on the circuit board and shorting the two centre pins. Never removed the strobe, I do enjoy seeing that in action though. Have you ever tried the platter centre hub blutack mod?

Nigel,
I shorted the pitch control as well, would like to remove it completely but don't want to spoil the deck. If I could afford another SL1200 I would do a lot more to the top plate, weld and fill holes etc.
I used the power switch to turn the strobe on and off, there is a thought that the circuit that flashes the strobe adds noise, so while I was under there with an Iron it got done.
no bluetac yet, is this just going in the centre of the platter inside the ring for the motor? certainly would help deaden the platter better.

Hi Andy,
Yes. Remove the platter. Take the three screws out underneath and release the centre hub, then pack the remaining housing with blutac. Now, it must be mentioned, I have seen one chap discredit this mod, saying it would alter the dynamic balance of the platter and because the weight wouldn't be evenly distributed, this would cause an adverse effect too. Your right, it damps the platter and cuts down on the bell like ringing. I can't find it but I'm sure Mike New once wrote that for cheapskates, this mod will give a large percentage of his expensive ETP platter. Maybe I dreamt it though. Worth trying, ten minute job. Small benefits, subjectively a smoother, less shouty presentation.

Dynamat is excellent for platter deadening but of course factor in the increased weight

Hi Mr Pharmacist,
Are you thinking the extra weight could have an adverse effect on the motor control or the platter balance?

Once the platter is running it should be fine, I don't know the suspension of yr deck but it's a bit more weight so adjust the tonearm just a tad. Dynamat is great, I put it under the platter of my Ariston RD40 , really made a good difference and the weight was distributed as evenly as I could

Exactly, I've used flash band myself, mostly to deaden metal cases.

No, in the centre. Remove the magnet boss from the platter first, by unscrewing the three Philips screws. All the blutac is located underneath this housing. Mind you, I've not tried your method so maybe it would have benefits too.

One simple trick is to place your turntable on glass as opposed to wood. As glass is a super cooled liquid it's properties of isolation are better.

Glass does seem to ring a bit though. I prefer a light mdf board on a wall shelf as a base.

Glass does seem to ring a bit though. I prefer a light mdf board on a wall shelf as a base. If you cut two tennis balls in half and then stick two at the front underside and one at the back it will not ring. Glass is far better than wood as it is a super cooled liquid.
