More years ago than I care to remember I had a Linn Sondek and played around with rolling my own turntable mats. Rolling my own was exactly what I did - I took childs plasticine and loaded it with lead shot (stripped from .410 cartriges) and carefully used my old Ma's rolling pin to press it all into an exact shape to fit the Linn. Fkin' nuts now with hindsight! After several decades I think I may have drained most of the sonic psycho babble from my brain - but then I guess you have to leave a bit in order to justify being a hi fi fan.

As for "sanding" rubber, almost shot my mouthfull of coffee out my nose on that one.Kinda be like sanding the family pet or sanding water, not recommended Yes, rather a strange image that one ;D You must remember this chap lives in Denmark Rick.... there's not much else to do over there apart from sand rubber.... it keeps them off the streets

It would look exately like I was sanding a piece of wood or metal, what is strange about that ?? We do not even have streets in Denmark. Oh and at the time beeing I am building a Case for my Amp, there will be some sanding involved, but sadly only wood no rubber this time.. Also my family is very smooth

I love Denmark Claus - what I could never get my head round is your Country is the one where all the European bacon comes from isn't it - so why do you never see a pig anywhere? Do you breed them in underground bunkers? A bit off topic - sorry.

The Pigs are usually a bit tugged away in giant buildings with no acess for the public in any way, they are being "grow" in a "germfree" inviroment.. We do have freerunning pigs also and it is a joy to behold those small piglets running around, they are adorable and charming.. There is however a downside to having so many pigs, they crap a lot and it really smells when they spray it over the fields. Also we do have problems with the slaugtering og them, because of the high wages in Denmark, they are being driven to other contries to get killed and we had a lot of public debate about the fact that it is borderline animalcruelty, the way some companies treat does poor animals during transport, but that is how the cursed EU works, it also costs a lot of jobs here to get them killed in Poland (and not a bad word about Poland).. I actually had a job at a slaugtherhouse for a short periode and it was like another planet to me, there were pigs hanging everywhere, giant chains in the ceiling with tousands of pigs being transported, I did not eat meat for almost two years after that and today I only eat meat that I know have had a "good" life (ecological and freerunning) and I also watch them being killed and cut up, otherwise I will not eat it, sad but true.. Something like that makes me wonder, how anybody can be so apalled about the bullfighting in Spain, when so many animals suffer everyday so that we can get cheap meat, heck they only kill a very small number of bulls and the farmanimals are being killed in the thousands everyday, makes one think. If you come to Denmark contact me and I will take you to a place where you can enjoy those wonderfull animals, they really are adorable.. And yes Denmark is a wonderfull country. And know back to sanding rubber

Claus, the Spanish murder thousands and thousands of bulls each year. The nasty little shits called matadors wear the most puke inducing nancy boy clothes and the bull is never meant to get lucky.
When one does the other little shits race out to protect the turd on the ground.
There is also a notorious little town called Castilla in Castille y La mancha that select a bull and drive it into town. There the sub-humans both adult and child then take about an hour to stab it to death.
And as in Denmark the pigs never see the light of day - I don't think that keeping the pigs indoors has anything to do with cleanliness - it's called laziness and cheap production.
Only in Extramadura do the Iberian black pigs live a normal life and then the cost of the ham is outrageous. Normal Spanish ham has to be one of the biggest hypes in history - it's tough, stringy and full of fat.
So many using LP12s oh dear never mind. I think there is a lot of hype about platter mats, my KD990 came with it's original heavy, dense mat and if there is any ringing it is'nt getting through to the LP.

My local butcher normally knows not only the name of the animal, but also its mother and fathers name.
No cruelty at all.
The meat is superb, really is.

I wonder why none of the tourist brochures put it that way ;D

In addition to the mat do any of you gents use record clamp or weight to hold down slightly warped LP's? I have a nice chunk of 2 1/4" round aluminum stock & am thinking about going down to the shop in our community & turning one on the lathe. Also have a Kenwood t.t. & the rubber mat has never caused a problem.

Just a thought the weight used to be made of brass for broadcast TT's aluminium is fairly light, guess it depends on what you want to achieve.
Also TT mats where of a felt material this allowed queuing the record then holding the record stationary whilst the TT was still spinning, the mass of the weight assisted bringing up the record to speed, all this in the days before SP10's

Hi Bill,
I've gone off record clamps of late. I've never used one on my Linn but I have been using a KAB record clamp on my Technics. Since I upgraded the bearing on the Technics I have dispensed with the record clamp for the time being. I noticed a fluidity to the sound without the clamp, when using the clamp, although the soundstage appeared improved, the music became flat & less interesting, locked down, without the wings to truly soar. We have to consider a few issues such as type of mat in use, how flat is the record being played, by clamping the vinyl too hard against the platter mat one could end up creating a bending bowl type effect where some of the record is not even touching the platter. Again, what about bearing noise being transfered more significantly into the record via the clamp? As always, I guess some experimentation is the order of the day.

Now I know where Linn got the idea of the felt mat. Again nothing new, just like when Linn got the idea of a suspension TT from AR and Thorens TD150 for the LP12.

Nigel, I never used a record clamp and funnily enough I reasoned what you have found in practice.
It's like damping the inside of a CDP - you can go OTT. I mentioned on another thread how I sit my CDP on a slab of slate, fine I like the subtle difference this makes but using another slab on top seemed to do the same as you have found with a record clamp.
Videoguy which Kenwood do you have?

Interesting looking mat here, www.trans-fi.com/resomat.htmSomething tells me it will probably sound similar to the Ringmat. Same principle? Can't imagine it would be ideal for my Technics turntable though as it probably wouldn't damp the ringing platter.
