would be great if you can access network or usb storage, 2TB is a lot but for a lifetime of storage you would need more.
You can use it as a DAC though which is good, will have to wait to see how much they will be over in the UK though.

Andy Sounds good in theory, except HDDs aren't reliable for more than a few years of regular use. Some will last longer, but I certainly would not trust them . Your best bet for the really important stuff is Archival Grade Gold CD-R which is supposed to last up to 300 years if stored correctly. Either that, or transfer critical content to new HDDs every few years ? Alex

Alex All content on HDD's should be mirrored to another one or better two ;D one backup is non backup I read about blue ray disk lifetime of 30 years. In professional computing there gives 800GB and 1.5TB backup tapes, but the drives are very expensive - I think professional audio studios use them .....

Friedrich We are talking here about Music storage, not sensitive data. Very few people are likely to Mirror their music storage. Most people would have the original CDs anyway, if something catastrophic happened. Alex

Alex I would like the original CD too I would like a original DVD (or blueray, and as .wav file only) for 24/96 files, but today the most are only downloads

In my situation I could easily fit all my downloaded high resolution files on a backup BluRay disc or 2 as a precaution.. Alex

I do, though, make sure that I have at least two copies. on different discs, of anything I have bought and downloaded like my Linn hi-res stuff. I also write these out to DVD-A. Derek Derek

Alex Alex, I have the original and two copies of my music/pictures. Total of 3 hard drives, the backup ones only get turned on when I transfer data to them. A 1 TB hard drive in USB format retails for about $150 so they are cheap enough.

I don't see the point when the vast majority rarely get played anyway, and tastes change as you get older. Very few older CDs were of a great quality to start with anyway, and many new releases sound bloody awful due to the heavy compression used to keep the younger generation happy with their "chewing gum for the ears" Alex

The issue of backups is as old as data storage.
The most compellling argument for keeping EVERYTHING together is that it all has immediate access. The stuff that you have "grown out of" will never get listened to if it is harder to access than the rest of your collection. Near on line only works in IT, not for entertainment.
Harddrives do die and 3 years should be the maximum time for consumer product and 5 years for pro stuff. If your drives are subject to heat from whatever source, their life gets even shorter.
Most modern PCs allow for RAID 1 (mirroring) internally. That is relatively cheap security, assuming the original CDs are owned and not "borrowed". As drive size doubles every couple of years, backups get even more convenient. If you use a SSD for playback, the raid drive is only archive and therefore SQ transparent.
