I've finally put together a filter box. It works a treat! Big thanks to Frans! Half way though building this my soldiering iron broke - so I ended up using the gas stove to heat up the metal tip to get it finished. Considering this is my very first attempt at electronics I'm very pleased with the result.

The 668B can be used without a filter mod. It doesn't have the lifted bass of the HD681 and also has a much smaller peak in the highs than HD681. Because the HD668B is a bit rolled off in the highs this is compensated, more or less, with the peak so removing the peak will result in an even more rolled off presentation.
The HD668B is quite similar to the SR850, though small differences exist between these 2.
For the SR850 I made a filter that removes the peak and adds the missing top. You cannot use the SR850 filter for HD668B as the impedance of the driver is different.

So i would like to mod my 681B too. The problem is: I'm from Germany. So how to get all components for the filter and rewiring. Can someone help me? Would be really great. These aluminum rings are really great, but i think getting them in Germany would be impossible, am i right?

I can supply inductors, capacitors and resistors. PM me.
The rings are no longer available.

New here, and have a couple Superluxes on order. I also have mod components on order :-)
Any chance, Frans, you could tweak the SR850's filter for the 681, to restore the upper treble for the 681? Rather than having to draw a new diagram, maybe just specify what the new component values would be for the 681 filter? I really like upper treble, so this would be great.

In case you need even more upper treble IMO the only way is to do that before the amp that is driving it. Doing it passively will alter the lows of HD681 in a negative way. The lows in the SR850 (as well as the highs) need a slight lift so passive filtering is possible in the SR850. HD681 needs less lows IMO, hence the latest filter which helps a bit in this aspect.
I personally have not experienced lack of upper treble in HD681's

Thanks Frans - I thought the 681 and 850 had the same upper treble, thus my inquiry :-) I will give the standard EQ circuit a go, and see if I still think I need treble.

Just PM me your address and I will post it after Chrimbo. (Your wife must have been in a mood to damage the headband!)

I purchased the pleather HD681 pads from eBay seller "wang_yifei" (currently item # 260918793574) for $16.70 USD delivered, and like them quite a bit. They are a bit oblong, which leaves more room for the length of my ears, whereas the AKG velour pads are circular and make for a tight fit around my ears. The pleather is soft and comfy, and make the cans seem really light on my head. They go on easily - not like the AKG velours which are something of a struggle to get on. The pads are not very deep, and as-is my ears contacted the driver covers: almost like an on-ear set of headphones. I used some 6 mm thick poly foam, cut into crescents and shoved under the pads, much like tissue paper mods. I colored the edges black with a permanent marker, so the padding blends in with everything else. There is enough room for a much thicker padding, but this is sufficient for my noggin. They don't seem to affect the sound quality much at all. With the cushions riding lighter on the side of my head, there might be a modest bass decrease, but it's not noticeable enough to quantify. So, I would recommend these pads, and for the price they are a great deal IMO. Attachments:

Hello guys,
i wanted to ask you, if someone knows how to make these metal-rings on my own? Are they shaped? Which measurements do they have? Is it possible to post the program of the shape-machine online?
Would be very great! Because i think that heliharris made these rings i wrote him a pm, but i didnt get an answer to now, and thats wy i thought i should ask here :-)
Hope you can help me! They look damn good ^^

The rings were made by 'the lord of the rings' or should I say master of the lathe.
I have no idea if he has CAD drawings but I suspect they were made on a CNC machine, the smaller ones perhaps on a lathe. Only Heliharris (Mick) can tell.
You could start by what he probably did. Pry off the plastic rings, measure them and make a copy of it in aluminum.
and yes.. they do look damn good and have a perfect fit too. The end-caps as well I might add.

Great, i hope he will read this, or realize he got a new message ;-)
At least i got the possibility to get access to an CNC machine, but im not really experienced in using it, and thats wy i hope he may send me some CAD templates.
I saw, that some people build heavy round "blocks" instead of the ring next to the ears in order to get a better resonance behaviour of the case...
Its just a beautyfull imagination this headphone with metall-rings and new ear pads... especially with the filter mod... *dream* ^^

Ah, i got another Question to these rings: are they made of steel or aluminium? Steel seems to be better in order to absorb audio waves in order to change the resonance, but this may make the headphone much to heavy?

Aluminium.. Pink Floyd (Mike) invented the coins glued to the original end-caps. The end-caps (round 'blocks') were also made by Mick. They could be made out of steel to add some weight. a bit more difficult to make yourself (unless you are using a CNC) as they appear to be simple round things but in fact were not simple at all, as they had strategically placed small holes and recessed parts including a special made nut as well to mount it. It was a real piece of art and machined to very fine tolerances

I got another question for those of you who recabled their superlux: i cant find all these cables in germany so i need to know, if they are special head phone cables, or just "normal" speaker cables? I've read, that some brands like AKG got cables in which only "a few" gas-atoms are? (so nearly vacuum) I think i cant use them to recable the supersonic, because in order to solder it i need to cut the end off? Ah, i found another category in the thomann sound-store May you give me a hint which cable from here would be great for an headphone? I saw some people used microphone cables? Are 75 ohm cables great? Sorry, im a newby in hifi and headphone modification www.thomann.de/gb/cable_per_meter.html

Why don't you pm Mike and buy a few metres of Evolution Pro from him? It's what almost everyone else did and it sounds fine.

I purchased the same pads a while ago, as the stock pads started to go hard on me. Though they are very comfortable, I too find they are very shallow. So much so that there are actually gaps where the pads don't touch my head. I really need to do something like you've done with the foam to push them out. Do you still find them as comfortable with the foam inside? I've yet to build the filter, or attach the Loonie end caps yet.. Life's hectic

I want this mod!!!! One problem of many is that i'm in the US and have no idea what parts are used and how to get this all done in that box. I basically want an exact copy of what was done here. If someone could tell me what parts I could use from radioshack.com maybe? That way I'll stop by the local shack and pick them up.
