Hi Guys, Sorry to but in on this leather fetish frenzy but can I try to pull it back a little on to topic. At the centre of my set up currently is a Wolfson 8716'd Beresford 7520 DAC. Today I've sent it to a health spa to have it operated on and Murata regs and Rubicon caps and other things that I don't understand fitted. This has meant that I've had to rearrange the set up to allow me to listen to my music. I'm currently running FLAC wirelessly from PC to iPod Touch to C-Moy to Fransified 681s and I'm in audio heaven - the linking of the C-Moy to the 681s seems, to my ears, to be a marriage made in heaven - absolute audio bliss. The C-Moy may not be exactly standard - one of my friends from 'another place' put it together for me and I believe that he put some of his own thinking into the design, but the results are incredible - I've never enjoyed listening to music so much and I suspect that there may be more improvement to come - the 681s haven't had 24 hours put on them yet and the C-Moy not much more, certainly less than 100. BTW if the leather headband project goes ahead I would be interested in taking part for a reasonable charge. Dave. Be envious, be very envious ;D .

If my project goes well, I will make them for members here, very cheap.
All who donate some leather garment, will recieve one for free.
I doubt that they will be much more comfortable than the normal one, but it will look cool..
I am also thinking about making some leather pad in a much nicer look, than the red ones, that are not as pretty as you could wish..
But I do not know how hard or timeconsuming it will be, but if I get the leather donated, they will be cheaper than the german ones (22 €), provided it is not a nightmare to make.
The headband will be 10 $ or there about..
But it is all speculation on my behalf and is very dependant on the timefactor.. Also if my sewing mashine is up for the task or need a replacement I do not know..

Guys, guys, guys (I take it girls have long departed this thread), I just wanted to say I received these treated headphones from Frans & am listening to them now - fantastic value for money & great sound irrespective of the money. I can only listen plugged in to my laptop at the moment but the sound is still high quality. A big thank you & congrats to Frans (solderdude) for the filter mod BTW, I heard this singer, (Hermione Hennessy) last night on an Irish TV programme & was captivated by her voice & the song - I'm listening to her now & she is a high quality performer with some great songs (her father, Christie Hennessy was also a top class song writer & singer). Have a listen here & tell me what you think hermionehennessy.comAlso sign up for a wonderful rendition of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah Sorry to sound like her PR agent but she is that good

I'm posting this here, a) to rescue this thread from the fetishists, and b) because the straight HD-681 thread has been dormant for a three weeks now... ...anyway, not for the first time in my life, I have been influenced to buy a set of headphones based on things I've read on a hi-fi forum. Previously, it ended in much expense (and tears), from reading this thread (the end result, after spending, literally, £000s, was a great disappointment, but I've come through the experience a wiser and richer man). This time the expenditure has been at the other end of the spectrum, less than £20 delivered for the eponymous headphones, and to my enormous pleasure, they're great! Just out of the box, cold, no mods (actually, there is no box, but you know what I mean... ) they're great fun and surprisingly musical. I'm having to keep them hidden from view for the moment (even £20 on headphones is going to give the local headphone Stasi a field day), but having read the very useful thread on burning in, I shall have to find a way of leaving them hooked up to the PC for a few hours... One silly question: where is the cable to the right earphone? It can only go through the sprung wire of the headband, can't it?

Does not go through it, uses the solid hardened and tempered rod as the conductor.

Order from Solderdude and get the velour pads to improve comfort. Sorted.

This thread is about the HD681 headphones, not the eponymous ones, where do you buy those from? Seriously though, do as Jerry says and get Frans (solderdude) to sprinkle some of his magic dust on them and turn them into a real giant killer.

Does not go through it, uses the solid hardened and tempered rod as the conductor. So the two metal rods are the two conductors? What about screening (or rather the lack thereof)? Welcome. In my opinion the filter is essential. Order from Solderdude and get the velour pads to improve comfort. Sorted. Just to save me re-reading the previous 35 pages: the filter is to cut the HF peak, is that right? (I've already got round the sweaty headband issue, without resorting to sniffing girls' underwear: I used four black felt pads, such as are used to protect wooden floors from scratchy chair-legs and the like.)

Ok.. so i just finished modding my HD681's. The mod consists of a dual entry recable, using Evolution XPC wire. A bit of blutak on the back of the drivers and a bit of cotton wool in the chamber. Also, as an alternative to the coin-trick, i put in some blutak behind the end-cap in. By acident, i ripped one of the stickers, so they also had to go. All in all i think it is a very noticeable improvement. The bass is much more firm and a bit deeper, and the sound is more clear and crisp. It seems like it have become faster and more precise basically. However i dont know which of the little things that made most difference, as i did them all at once. A couple of pictures for the crowd:

Haven't found the time to experiment with dampening yet. I've built a filter by Frans' recipe and just enjoyed the music since. HD681 sound significantly better now (after 150+ hrs) and a lot more balanced. Prior to dampening the cups I plan to rewire them (dual entry) I have a question to ask (perhaps a bit silly): What is the part name for the cable splitter in the photo? I cannot find anything at Farnell. Every "cable splitter" search gives me connectors, adapters and such. Is there a special name for it? Where can I get such a thing? I've cropped the last picture Lars posted here, for exemplification (hope Lars doesn't mind)
