Yes, I came across this same phenomenon too with for some HD681... Shrill and bass-less yet after several mins (to an hour) you can't tell them apart anymore. (I reported it a few times : I suspect the cheap price has something to do with it (production spread). After about 1 hour they didn't change much anymore IMO. I have never come across this phenomenon (in this degree) with any other headphones I ever bought new. They do prefer low Ohmic amplifiers (tightens the bass) a filter WILL be coming your way again (as soon as I have some time to make it) but with 6.3mm plug/socket. It can be used on the HD681, 681B and probably HD661 too (not on the Sony, different impedance)

I didn't notice it with the first HD681 I had, but this one today was appalling sounding at the start and I seriously suspected something was wrong. Thank goodness for that Frans!! I thought I was starting to go nuts. Now, it's perfectly ok and matches my one. Thanks for the filter Frans. I have searched high and low. It's not just the filter that's missing - all kinds of little bits and bobs. PM me what I owe and I'll Paypal. I've never heard this amount of change before either, which is why I thought there was a problem. I only listened because I told my friend I'd fit decent pads since he's even frightened of doing that!! He wasn't here when I listened thank goodness but they're spot on now. It kind of spooked me and made me think my ears had gone off key or something!! Ian

Yesterday, i tried to mod the 681 last time, but unfortunately, the left driver won't sound anymore, the right work fine. I have tried many time solder then desolder, then again but won't get any sound from left driver. The wire is correctly solder, i don't know why? The first time it didn't sound, i soldered wrong: the red wire with the top solder plob, the one near the "superlux" in the picture above.

The 2 solder joints on the left must never be touched ! Those are the pads where the (extremely thin and fragile) wires from the drivers are soldered on.
There is a small possibility when you just reheat the left one it will work again but most likely, when soldering on the wire, you broke the wire to the diafragm and it might be beyond repair.
the unused pads on the left of the superlux name can be safely used. I use these to fix the filter so it can't rattle around.
Fortunately they don cost much (a new HD681) so only little money is lost, yet a vast amount of knowledge is gained.

I received my set yesterday and found the same thing straight out of the box. The highs were shrill, everything was compressed and the bass was lacking. I couldn't listen to them they were so bad. I set them up with a range of songs, pink noise and a 20Hz to 20kHz sweep .. 30 minutes later it was a whole different story.. these things are amazing! 4 hours later the highs were more relaxed and it makes for a much more enjoyable listening experience. I let them burn in overnight and haven't heard much of a difference in SQ. For those who don't have any high end cans: These are comfortable headphones. I was concerned that the "plasticy" pads were going to be horrible, but they are the most comfortable set of headphones that I have. The clamping force is a bit much after a few hours, but not as bad as I was expecting. I imagine, as others have suggested, a little time on a head sized object would sort this out pretty quick. I wonder if the clamping problem is due to the head size difference between asian (where the product is made and sold primarily) and western people? My only issue with these headphones is the slightly recessed mid range vocals. If it doesn't get any better I'll probably end up making one of solderdude's later filters that lightly tames the bass and treble I'll be letting these cans age for a few weeks before I do any mods, but so far the mods I'd like to do: - Loonie mod (The Canadian Loonie is about the same diameter as the end caps) - Fish tank filter wool - Might spray paint the red rings a glossy black to contrast with the mat black of the headphones for an aesthetic improvement over the dingy red they are now.. These are far and away better than anything I've ever heard, I'm very happy with my purchase I find these are perfect for electronic music, anyone heard of deadmau5 before? I enjoy "Some Chords" "Raise Your Weapon" and "Ghosts n Stuff" Also, Prodigy "Spitfire" and "Invaders Must Die" sounds amazing on these cans.

The mids quantity was the main reason why I opted for the HD681b. They are just a tad more in control of the bass with the same treble. However, tame the treble with a filter and they are spot on for me. The mids 'feel' louder because the bass is less.
I use the mids as a level and then fine tune the volume until the bass kicks in. Actually, I find that all of the 681's 'focus' quite low down. After that, it's headbanging stuff!!
It's strange taking such a cheap headphone seriously, I find. It must be the snob in me.
It's useful to have all 3 versions because it's mainly the quantity of bass that lessens when you go from 681 to 681b to 681f. Great to be able to choose a headphone suited to what you're listening to for just £60 roughly, total.
I find the sound of 681b about right for most stuff and the only problem is the treble which can be adjusted with a filter anyway.
Where are you putting the wool?

It will remove a lot of the deep lows but also could start to sound a bit 'congested/confined' depending on the type and amount of wool. I have experimented with tiny amounts of wool and this already had influence. To influence the lows simply cover a few of the holes.
The -f version is absolutely 'bass less' compared to the -b version and sounds aenemic. With higher impedant amplifiers (120 Ohm) some more bass is detected.
Mid-lows are indeed not the strongest point of the HD681...

Yes. Much less. However they're great for speech clarity. (You know what I'm like for speech!!) They do get rid of the BBC 'chestiness' in mens' voices to some degree.
If you have a headphone that plays nice bass, they often seem to creep up into mens' voice area so speech is not so good.
You get that with in room speakers as well - especially when they're close to a wall to reflect more.
They're all so cheap it's easy on the wallet to have a choice of sound. However, they all have that top end.

I think the -f are also good monitors for single instruments too because of the lack of bass and 'exaggerated' clarity. Only the not so good attenuation of outside noises makes them less suited for this purpose... Voices will sound 'natural' on it indeed. I suspect the -f are more like a HD660 but with a touch of 'added clarity'. Can't say that for sure, just a hunch from reviews, never actually heard them.

Hi here's an easy mod for your 681's just clap a bunnet on your bald head pop the HP's on your ears over the bunnet..........comfort increase 100% +...... SQ is certainly improved however I don't have any Jilly Goolden superlatives to lash you with so you'll just have to give it a go and report back. Have to rattle up Fran's filter now, stick it in a small box with HP socket out and a cable running back to the SandyK and get rid of that damned not long enough HP cable snaking across the room......might just get my head back. Alan Just thought......perhaps it only works for "baldies"

I told Andy Chung that too and suggested that SLX may be a better name.... "SuperLuX" SLX.... sounds more like "audio" and less like a washing machine I also reckon they should up the price and fit better pads etc. No doubt about it, Superlux 'phones are superb. Superlux drivers are already world class. The idea of cloning the look of famous headphones closely was a good idea from Superlux. This made it possible to use a lot of already existent parts (AKG velours pads for instance) to upgrade them. For me, the HD660 reveal very clearly the strengths and weaknesses of the Superlux 'phones. Great drivers, combined with mediocre casing quality and absolutely cheap pads and due to some sloppiness during manfucturing, one of the drivers is rattling when the music has deep bass. I know they could do better. Time that these Chinese headphone geniuses really show what they can! I agree that a premium "SLX" brand could be a good idea. I hope also that they keep the current "Superlux" brand with cheap headphones. These cheap headphones are a good reason for many people to start listening seriously with headphones. I'm curious to see Superlux (or SLX?) headphones in the future that are based entirely on Superlux designs, including own types of earcups and headbands and, of course, an individual and distinctive look. China was (and is) well known for its excellent silk: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silkde.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seide(the German wikipedia link has better pics than that in English) Could we see silky earpads with future Superlux (premium) developments? I don't know if silk really does a good job for headphones, but basically I mean that they should make also a premium product line with their own look and high-quality parts/pads. I know they are very capable guys. It's probably only a matter of time until they come up with even better headphones.

I found the 681 lacks mid bass, it extend very low but the bass is not full.

Impressions.. Just got a pair of 681 and 668B's today, also got a pair of k240 velour and some acoustic inside foam. Wow, really seriously am I surprised. I thought they might be good but wow, I've been tapping my feet all day. The definitive sign of good playback. 681's are flawed massively in the treble department, but the treble the produce excesses of isn't nasty treble, it's still listenable! Bass extension is almost absolute, frigging amazing, but at the same time its incredibly detailed and not heavy, midd bass seems fine. Midrange, again wow, se expressionate and fast and correct. The problem of course is it's VERY hard to hear this because the treble is really really putting you off. Of course I need the filter MOD, but most of my belongings in storage in Australia - temperature controlled soldering irons. So eventually when I get round to modding or finding someone with a soldering iron and a steady hand, is there any special resistors that sound better. The guy who wrote earlier about senheisser hd800 killers I think I'm in advance going to believe. I can hear the promise in these cans already after about an 20 minutes of burn in !! The 681's are really comfy as well, I have a large head. I can't believe they are 15 quid. Glad I added them to the basket. One day I'll get the mod and be happy. Glad I've got at least one good headphone output, one of my integrated amps is definitely possible to hear it's not quite perfect. As for variance people talk about, mine were bog standard from thoman (is a big which could house like 20 pairs of headphones) and the 681's were in a shrink rapped packet I presume the real problem is a source. I'm using a Jungson Impression mk2. 668B's sound good but more to the point they are musical and listenable. K240 foam pads made a HUGE difference in fixing the bass. I'm a really really fussy audiophile and have heard loads of really good stuff, not just high end. So So glad I discovered Superlux. Might have to check out some of their microphones or at least find out which recording studios use their gear.

a set of velvet pads came today, purchased on ebay from china. the pads feel nice and are very comfortable. i'd say they are a little too small, by about 2=3mm and as a result you can clearly see the ridge where they grab the headphones. the padding in them is about as firm as the originals but dont block out as much external noise as the originals. they have altered the sound quite considerably too. it has dimmed the highs a little and taken away a bit of the low end. as a result, the whole volume appears to have decreased. next step is to adding the filter mod, hopefully it will bring the lows back.
