They don't just look cool, they are also much more comfortable than the sticky-stock pads.
I'll see what I can do. If I don't have any left you can wait for the next time I will order from Thomann ? As soon as I have 2 more orders it is cheaper to buy from me because of sharing of the shipping costs.

Hi man227
for pads and filters contact me (Solderdude) for the rings heliharris (if he will still make them, I thought it was a once in a lifetime thing) for re-cabeling jobs: PinkFloyd can supply cable.
I would keep the HD650 (I did) it has a totally different sound signature.

Have you noticed how resonant the the metal headband hoops are on the Superlux 681s? Derek It occurred to me that people may have thought this posting to be an attempt at a joke - this is a serious comment. I think the metal hoops need to be damped. Got to be as important a change as replacing the red plastic rings with metal. Comments? Derek

My thougths go along putting in some bars between the rods, that should stiffen it up, but seeing that the rods transfer signal from left to right you need to be carefull not to make a short if metal is used. Also adding weigth could solve some problems, but do I want to wear an extra weigth on my head ?

I have re-wired mine and am not using the headband as a conductor so there may be more options available to me as far as damping is concerned.
I have a couple of ideas that may work without giving problems to those who have not re-wired. I dont think a little extra weight is a problem as they are a very light weight headphone to begin with, an extra gram or two wouldnt really be noticed.
I will have a play tonight if i get time

@ Derek, The resonance annoys me too . When you put the cans on your head you can clearly hear the rods 'sing'. But this goes away within a second so don't mind at all once it is on my head. I do not believe it affects the soundreproduction in any way though so why bother. Heard/seen no complaints on this subject concerning AKG cans and seeing they share the same construction (AKG also uses the rods to get the signals from left to right) I don't think it is that big a problem. The advantages of this construction are aparant: VERY low ohmic losses (important as these cans are low Ohmic) VERY low capacitance as the wires are far apart, MUCH lower than if normal wires were used. The inductance of wires and the rods will be around the same value and the number of solderings would be the same also as it would not be handy in a low-cost production line to have two different earshells (that's why the stickers are opposite also). If you were to damp it you could wrap some damping material around the rods and make a nice (p)leather finish around it. Wouldn't be able to wad the cans into a little ball anymore! Let's face it ... the HD681's are cheap cans and they simply are because they were manufactured in a cheap way. (Thank God for that... otherwise we would have paid the same prices as AKG's or other brand cans) With all the mods installed they almost are the same price of more expensive cans I presume. But there is no harm in trying to improve them even more.

Somone will have to try playing tone through them to see if the headband has a singing problem!
I normally use them in bed and i hagve noticed that the pillow rubbing on the headband is a pain, so deadening them would help me.

Ahhhh.. Yes I would consider that a problem. But rubbing a pillow against any HP would give some noise me thinks.. The headband would be giving of an annoying tone when touched. It's just like a snare ! just like touching the original cable bugs me. The microphonic behaviour of it is annoying. Should replace the cable for this reason I reckon. I suggest you play with some materials but I think rubbing against it with a pillow will always bring about contact noise... it just wouldn't do it at a certain frequency/decay as much anymore. In ears.. perhaps ?

Get your self some inears, then you can just rest your head on the pillow and can not hear the wife snorring.. Mine are so comfortable that I sometimes fall asleep with them and then I can not hear my alarm

The rods may in fact be superior to most cables. I have a pair of high quality interconnect cables called Sound Pipes-they are very stiff and you have to pre-form them before connecting them. I dont know if they are the same material but I dont think you should assume the rods are inferior to wire.

That's my point exactly. The rods are very likely far better conductors than if a piece of cable were used. Earlier in this thread the fear was spoken that these rods would be horrible conductors which they aren't at all. Nobody minds if AKG does the same ... ;D But his beef is not with the electrical side of the rods though but a mechanical one. The rods vibrate and make a 'humming' noise when excited. This has no influence on the electrical path but it is annoying due to mechanical conduction of the sound which you can clearly hear.

Does this mean we can not use them for dirty movies ??

I tried grabbing hold of both rods whilst listening and couldn't tell any difference. If there is any mechanical transfer of sound its below my audio threshold.

Try tapping or 'plucking' it while it is on your head and you'll hear a fast decaying tone (don't play any music while doing this). This is what he means. @ Claus: You can watch dirty movies with them... just don't put your head on a pillow with a HD681 on your head. At this point you probably wouldn't give a ... about the microphony and wouldn't be playing with the rods of the can at all but with a totally different rod most likely ;D

Oh help..........
I have tried in ear type things, several pairs infact, and i hate them. they never fit my ears, falling out all the time, and i find them very uncomfortable. i may have ears that are not designed for them!!
Much prefer proper headphones. So i will try holding onto my stiff rod, and see if it makes a humming sound when excited, i will then see if it is noticable when playing music at my normal bed time volume.
looks like im in for a fun night!!

Well, don't "excite" the bloody things..... ignore them and just listen to the fckin' music! I don't normally sit "twanging" rods when I'm listening to music..... do something else with your hands ;D

Hi Guys, Hope this is within thread drift limits but I've been testing my filter with my HD681s tonight and thik that it offers a subtle but worthwhile improvement in SQ straight out of the box but .......
I thought I'd try it with my other phones, Senn HD280 Pro and the improvement here is rather more than subtle - very noticeable. Just a note of caution: - trying against the Superlux earlier in the evening, the filter was cold with zero hours on the clock. It had been in continuous use for 3 hours when I swapped to the Senns so maybe some of the extra improvement could be due to warm up or burn in. Any comments?

It's a "passive" filter so I doubt any "burn in" is necessary (or possible)..... may just be the mains supply was better / evening time / you blew your nose....... Seriously, little things like that can make all the difference.....
