Well as winter is setting in I'm planning a bunch of projects to tide me over. One question: Am I better off buying a new V-Can and modding that, or a 2nd hand X-Can and modding that one? I have a tube amp atm (an Audiotailor Jade) which is a mighty amp, and I have a portabe IBasso Python SS amp, as well as a MiniDac4 (which has a HA unit). My HD650's are my favourite cans, but I like change as well - hence my thoughts on the V-Can.

I have been lucky enough to have an X-Can V2 modded for me by Mike and changed the power supply to a Little Pinkie and it is bloody amazing with the Senn HD650.
I also have a V8 and currently, the V2 is gettting a lot of use. It seems to clean up the Senn fat sound that is commonly referred to with them but retains a nice low end clout with a clean top end.
If you are able to get one and have it modded, I think it's a bargain. The one that Mike did for me looks brand new and he has updated components inside to make it into a real class act.
If I want a slightly lighter sound - I go to the HD600 and the difference between them is really obvious on both amps. On other amps that I have used, the differences have not been as noticeable. If you want real low end whack - the HD250 rattles your socks if there's low bass on the recording via both X-Cans.
The V8 has also been improved with a Little Pinkie and a nice new set of Valves.
If I was going to start with any X-Can, I would now go second hand and get it modded. I've totally switched to the X-Can sound as a result.

I have both the V-CAN and the X-CAN v2. At the moment both are in unmodded state, but I intend to change this in the future. Most of my computer equipment and my amps are getting their power from a APC Smart-UPS 750VA (more precisely: their wallwarts are getting their power from the UPS). I hear some improvement because the power is alredy filtered and the voltage is stabilized. As long as no modding is applied, the X-CAN v2 clearly sound a lot better than the V-CAN. The V-CAN has some annoying harshness and overdone brightness in contrast to the smooth sound of the tube amp. I like tubes Perhaps it's also about the costs: Even second-hand X-CANs can be quite pricey. The HD650's are also my favourite headphones Both amps sound good with them but I clearly prefer the X-CAN v2. The harshness of the V-CAN is less noticeable at low to mid volume levels and with the HD580. The HD650 are all too revealing with the V-CAN. I like to get some mods for both amps
