Hi Adrian, I didn't get caught for import duty, it's a shame you did. Have you got it built yet, or are you waiting for the bits? (hopefully posted tomorrow)

Will, Does that mean yours is up and running? I think Adrian would be really going some/dead keen to have done so today

Put it all together properly with mods, and it should easily outperform most if not all of the ebay DACs, and perhaps even a >$1,000 commercial DAC. Alex

Hi Chris, I haven't built it yet, had no chance. I was hoping to make a start tonight, but I had a ridiculous 5 hour meeting today, and feel like I pulled a muscle in my brain Best leave hot solder and small components until I can think straight. I hope you and adrian remembered to order the PSU board, I know I didn't pillock!Oh, and I get the impression that Adrian is kean!

In fact Jaycar did quite well out of me, I took the chance to stock up on low ESR caps and few other do dahs (tech term guv!). Including their flame effect boards for halogen lamps, I'll convert our little Bhudda static candle holders to flickering flames for the restaurant As for Adrian, go matey go!

I think I have a spare Will's dual PSU pcb kicking about, and if need be, I'll knock the 5V supply up on veroboard. It would have been quicker to buy the jaycar board, especially as they are such good VFM.
A quick question, Alex. When you power up, which input does the dac default to, the coaxial spdif or one of the opticals?

Will It defaults to the 1st optical, however that is supposed to be easily altered. It's one of the things that I am leaving until I have finished modding it. Besides, W7 is giving me plenty of headaches and work to do for a while .e.g. I won't be doing any scanning for a while ! At least my email problems are fixed ! ;D Alex P.S. Best to save those SF14 for the final version of the PSU.

Excellent! That'll make life easier! Oh yes, won't waste 'em! One of the things that I want to do is only use the coaxial input, and bypass IC2 on the input board (all easy enough), just need to figure out what effect the logic has on things. Simple case off looking at the logic on IC4, and seeing if hard wiring the control logic works. Mind you, I need to build it first!

As the article says it is easily programmed via a remote to do that. " The scanning delays and the initial default input can also be reprogrammed . This is done by holding down one button on the front panel ,then pressing a second button and releasing both together." See p74 and p.75 of the photocopy. One day you may wish to use the unit and it's additional inputs elsewhere. The input board could be mounted for now in an inconspicuous place internally, then if needed in the future, just mount it externally using a longer connecting cable. However, I can see what you are getting at. Alex

Hello All Having made a second unit for my brother and having the first as a guide, I did not install the Toslink receivers and their components or IC2 the multiplexer and shorted pins 12 and 13 of IC2 together with no downside. So as soon as you have a source that is on plugged into the SPDIF input the yellow LED is illuminated. Without something on plugged in the unit still scans after one minute, the only drawback is the first Blue LED is lit not the third which makes no difference to me. Alex put RCA receptacles of a better quality and mounted the board back from the rear panel to allow some room for the wires to connect to the RCAs. I did this also as putting the PCB RCAs through the back panel, you need a larger hole so they do not ground out on the back panel which if you follow the instructions the case is grounded. The other dilemma when using the PCB RCAs is that when you push the plug onto the connector is moves forward and touches the case, possibly causing a ground loop. Alex has developed a nice little dual purpose board that he may post soon, to accommodate the oscillator module and also can be used as a highly regulated PSU for the DIR9001 2x 3.3v and the DAC 1x3.3v and 1x 5v, I switched over to using zeners as the reference input as per Alex’s suggestion and we had great improvements especially when supplying the DIR 9001. Much smoother and less glassy top end. Alfred

Is there any further news on the possilbility of the USB add on board?
It would be very useful to me, to cover during times of transformation from very basic PC based setup, to more a dedicated one.
I know I can use something like the the Musiland, but the add on board appeals more.

I agree with Alfred about the RCA output jacks. It may be O.K. with the full kit which includes precision prepunched metalwork, but I would like Alfred recommend using panel mounting RCA sockets instead . The little PCB that Alfred mentioned was designed by Will, and I made a few minor changes to use it as single sided, as double sided PCBs are too damn hard for most of us with limited facilities. It is based around the schematic I posted a couple of pages back. The 1uF capacitor could also be anything from 470nF to 2.2uF. Perhaps Will would care to post the amended artwork ? Please note, that so far I have only reports from Alfred to verify the improvementswhen using this design, as I am too damn busy trying to get bloody Windows 7 working with more than just a few programs ! Talk about a P.I.T.A. !!! I am even having trouble logging into RG after letting Norton take care of passwords. BIG MISTAKE ! When I do manage to log in, I click on a thread and most of the time I am then no longer logged in ! e.g. I try to look at a post in Saucereful, and then I am logged out and it is no longer accessible ! ATM, I can't play Video or music !!! Alex P.S. I stopped Internet Explorer from auto insertion of passwords, and O.K. again. Was most likely a conflict with Norton Security.

I'm having a few PC problems myself at the moment, as my laptop hardrive is playing up, causing random lockups. Fortunantly, it's a work laptop, and I get a new one on Monday. The pcb based of Alex's oscillator will be posted next week, along with a PSU only version of it, for people to use. Just to clarify, there is no double sided pcb design, just one version has GND 'flooded' across the PCB, simialr to my PSU board, hereAlfred, thanks for the info on spdif select, top stuff! I've used these chassis mount RCA's on my AK class A and Buffalo dac, and they are very, very nice.

A quicky, I've populated the boards, stock, and hope to power up over the next few days. One thing that had been improved in my version is the LED pads of the front panel switch. They have now been made bigger, so that the small led leads can be laid on the surface of the pad, after bending the leads at 90 degrees. This way you solder on the surface, rather than the hole.
Apart from that, it went very smoothly. Very impressed with the Jaycar kit.

A very cheap Sound Blaster or X-FI card will give you SPDIF, and cost no more than a kit from Australia by the time P and P is factored in. I heard a cheap Soundblaster card shoved in a 2nd hand Dell Dual Core PC yesterday with my friend's X-DAC v3 and it sounded fine. He is going to try the same with a Emu 0404 that he has, and try to tell if there is any audible difference.

Yes, I know you can do that for a tower but I'm laptop based, hence the desirability of a board in the SC DAC, until I get around to a dedicated tower. Thanks anyway.

Laptops these days don't have expansion slots (pcmcia?) anymore do they?
Used to be able to get a soundblaster that would plug in...
