Now this guy across the road has a pair of springer spaniels. Nothing wrong with that you might think. NO! theses feckin' things bark bark bark all day then when they get tired of that they growl and now and again by way of variation they howl like banshees. So there's me trying to listen through my nice little system with this cacophony in the background. I've had to resort to buying some ETY phones (and then having to build myself a liitle amp with a significant degree of bass boost to fill in the missing bottom octave). If I go for a walk along the nearby river bank or canal bank (all very pleasant and rural) I have to dodge these steaming heaps of turds dropped by "man's best friend" So I ask you who needs dogs? They smell, snap, bark, spread disease, crap and piss allover the place and are generally totally anti social. Get rid of all the bastards!

Apparently it was pretty good at shutting up all but old deaf dogs. Ultrasonic mosquito repellers are also effective at short range. Perhaps they could also be amplified to a higher power level into a tweeter ? SandyK

...you can also get two types of collars, one gives the dog a small electric shock each time it senses said beast barking and the other is ultrasonic. Maybe a nice big PA amplifier on the latter!
More seriously it's the inconsiderate owners that need a good kick. Training and cleaning up is their responsibility. Depending on where you live, the UK (I'm assuming you live there and not Oz) has some useful bylaws against animal noise, worth investigating if the problem is excessive.

I tend to agree with you - people buy dogs... and then leave them at home to 'entertain' the rest of us.
I have this theory on why dogs bark. From a dog's point of view the logic is straightforward.
On the first occasion a dog's owner goes out all day, dog gets lonely and barks to call out to its owner. Owner eventually returns, say, six hours later.
Dog thinks.. ahaha! If I bark ALL BL@@dy DAY... they come home!
Problem is , unless you tell 'em, owners dont know the dog barks.

Yep, it's the owners that are at fault, not the dogs. The owner should control them, not leave them barking, and also clean up after the dog.
I know more dog owners, myself included, who clean up and look after their dogs properly, than the Cock Badgers who buy cats, and leave them to roam around, crapping in other peoples gardens and predating wild birds.
Responsible pet ownership is the key, and it seems more dog owners have it.

Will With all due respects, that is bullshit ! Downunder, MOST cats (especially female) are desexed and microchipped , as required by law,and also kept inside at night. Desexed cats are far less likely to roam also. Next door to me there is a little dog that would bark at his own frigging shadow, and barks even when there is any kind of movement in our backyard. It goes right off it's brain when there is a possum in a tree too. I guess you guys don't have problems with savage dogs mauling kids, and even their owners , disfiguring them, and also causing deaths ? We regularly see TV reports of these sickening incidents and the disfiguring damage caused. Many times, the dog did not have a previous record of aggression. Certain breeds are also under threat from legislation for this reason. As a kid, I was bitten on my left hand by the dalmation across the road when walking back from school, in an unprovoked attack. Although the damage appears to be gone, I still get irritated in that area, and it becomes quite itchy. That's 60 years later ! Alex

Everyone should carry a tazer then?
Would be funny people running on trails with a tazer strapped their back. And a bandolier of tazer cartiledges.
I am feeling evil today.

Not bullshit, Alex, just based on my own experience, as most peoples are. From what I have read previously, Australia has better laws regarding responsible pet ownership than the UK. In the UK,neither cats or dogs are required to be neutered or chipped, although certain breeds of dog are illegal or require a licence to own. This legislation was brought in due to certain breeds attacking people. Attacks still happen, but they are not regular. Most of these occur due to the 'responsible' adult leaving a child alone with the dog. To me it seems that a lot of people buy a cat as they see it as an 'easy' pet. They feed it then let it roam all day and night. They then crap in your garden (cat shit can cause a pregnant women to miscarry), fight outside your house waking you up (never outside the owners house), dig up plants, kill wild birds and piss on your car. I've experienced all except the first with cats, but never had any bother with dogs. In MY experience, dog owners don't let their dogs roam, and scoop-up after the dog, although there is always the pillocks who do not scoop up after their dogs. If we had rules similar to Australia, where all cats and dogs were neutered, chipped and looked after properly, then perhaps it would be better. But at the end of the day, it's down to the owners to be responsible, and they aren't, whether they own a dog or cat. For the record, I used to own a cat, who died of old age. He was neutered, and also wore a collar with a bell, to give the game away when stalking. He was also taught to use a litter tray. I'd have one again, but the wife is allergic to them. Brodie, our 13 year old wire fox terrier, loves chasing cats that should not be in our garden

Hey Will What else do you expect from a nation of people who are too lazy to have sex, wouldn't get up off the couch to change a TV program they didn't like if there was no remote, or run after a bus ? Not that I am much better ! Alex P.S. My 7 year old female cat sleeps indoors, usually on the end of my bed, is neutered , but not chipped, and doesn't normally shit anywhere except in her litter tray. As for chasing birds, she is too fat and well fed to move quickly enough to catch birds, and stays in her own back yard, but mainly inside, because that's where the big scratching posts are that make sounds. Coincidentally since I started ranting about these revolting canines I met up with my best mate's sister who lectures at university in vetinerary matters. This uni has completed a study which they claim to show that dogs are becoming more and more unintelligent - quite daft creatures in fact. Apparently, since mankind feeds them, plays with them, walks them, grooms them and occaisionally cleans up after them, they require zilch in the way of intellect since everything is done for them. Succesive generations are getting more and more stupid. Non domestic canines such as foxes, wolves etc. have to catch their grub, evade predators and find their own shelter and are at least 100% more intelligent than their domesticated counterparts (don't ask me how this is evaluated). So when these pooches across the road from me start their inane barking I'll at least have the satisfaction of knowing that they are probably brain dead.

prawn I have heard it said that dogs sometimes look a bit like their owners. Are you sure that it's not the dogs' owners that are the reason for them dumbing down ? SandyK

some dog-racial barks more some lesser and some not - my deceased dog Yukon (a malamute) dont bark, he howl (like a wolf) - but mostly he was quit. my opinion - as smaller the dogs so much bark they but barking dogs are mostly poorly reared cats are rogue but dogs are group-living animals - this ist the most problem!

The large dog, a Rhodesian Ridgeback, does not bark The most I ever hear from him is a gentle, deep, sub-woofer territory, growl. On the other hand.. the LITTLE yappy b@st@rd yaps every time I open my back door. It knows it's me. It knows I live here. It doesn't get used to it. I lived here before IT did. Sigh. Derek

I think you'l find that in England it's the bipeds who piss and shit anywhere and make the most noise when they stagger home pissed out of their minds. I've lived in a few European countries and the English and the Spanish males when they visit the toilet just love to piss and shit anywhere but in the pan.
We brought two abandoned dogs with us from Spain and one howls like a wolf at the sound of fire engines and ambulances and looks at me to see if I give him the thumbs up or down..
Now the beautiful little hunting bitch has got into the act as well. Now here's the thing the male dog called Fox (because he looks like one) never barks or howls at night.
Now here's the thing - I don't think dogs are getting more stupid I think bipeds are.
Let's face it if you take a bunch of townies who are mainly physical slobs and dropped them in a wilderness, how long do you think any of them would survive.
A dog you can trust but other bipeds - cuidado hombre, mucho cuidado es la verdad.

One of the pooches that started me off on this thread has apparently croaked. According to neighbours it threw itself into a frenzied paroxysm of barking and howling which kinda carried it off. I'll be able to get out some open 'phones at last - but feel sorta sad about the animal. Talking of pissing and crapping my wife's aunt has a siamese cat that lives with her in a flat in Paris - this cat can't go out 'cos they're on the 4th floor but has learnt to use the WC!. She never misses but hasn't learnt how to flush the bog yet.
