Had anyone a chance to try these: Sennheiser HD380 ProThe HD380 Pro is Sennheiser's current top-of-the-line "professional" headphone. I don't say they sound good (or not). I'm simply curious how they compete against the HD250II Linear. At least they are available as new product. The HD250II Linear is in contrast hard to get.

I have heard the HD280 next to the HD380 and IMHO the HD280 sounded better. have owned the HD250II after my DT990 broke (one driver defective) and liked the sound a lot. I traded it in for HD650. Not heard the HD250II for a long time so can't compare. When auditioning the HD280 and HD380 and K240 and K270 I stumbled upon the HD681. So... obvious to say what I went for ... the biggest bang for your buck since the KSC75.
Mind you ... my personal preference may well not be yours... listen to them for yourself.
For a closed headphone the HD280 sounds very well... but try to audition the SHURE SRH840 or Denon D2000 (never heard the Denon but own the SRH840.. but is for sale again... closed is not my cup of tea ... alas.. probably why the HD250II went too ... and my DT770 for that matter.

I wasn't too happy with the HD280. Too closed in for me. The four most common headphones I've seen being used by people monitoring are HD25, HD250, Beyer DT150 (& 100) and the DT770's. HD25 - portable use. HD250/Beyers - monitoring (for performers) Beyers are also commonly used by camera operators with a mic boom attached. DT770 - BBC DJ's seem to like these. The Beyers are probably really common because they're cheap for what they are and are built like tanks. Mine have survived all kinds of abuse including being sat on quite a few times. (I mean REALLY sat on - full and square wallop) I think my own personal favourite is the HD250 since it almost doesn't sound like a closed headphone. Ian

The HD380 and HD280 aren't too different in the 'closed' sound dept. A closed headphone that doesn't sound closed at all... ? try the Shure SRH840.. give it a listen. Much heavier in weight than HD250 though !! Of all the closed headphones I own this one was the best (together with the HD250) but the sound of the SRH480 is much closer to the HD650 than HD250.
I owned the DT770-edition ... not the 'tank' version.. there is a big difference in price but smaller difference in SQ.

Thanks for the feedback regarding the HD380! Mind you ... my personal preference may well not be yours... listen to them for yourself. Probably this is the best proof for every headphone: To hear it with my/your own ears. Sennheiser also made a couple of other headphones which had a similiar look as the HD250II linear. I found a HD540 reference II in an online auction. There's was also a HD540 reference (predecessor to HD540 reference II) and HD530. But all of them are open headphones (not closed as the HD250II linear). With a little luck and a big portion of patience I can get one of them used.

I saw over at another forum that a employee from Sennheiser also loves the hd250II's as well. I wonder how many requests via a contact like him it would take for Sennheiser to start making them again?

I can NOT believe I have browsed through all pages of this thread and there is not ONE eFFn picture of these. I have read many threads here at RG and there are always LOTS of photos. I find it totally bizarre that there are not any, being as there seems to be such admiration put on them cans ..... scratches head and packs another bowl.

I bought a used Sennheiser HD560 Ovation II and got it this weekend. Although it is not the same as the HD250II linear (it's open and not closed back as the HD250II linear), it is a really interesting headphone which sounds very good to my ears. It sounds not like the HD580/600/650 series (not as laid back). Is there a connection between the good sounding of the HD250II linear and the HD560 Ovation II? I guess maybe it has something to do with the shape of the ear cups. I have already "modded" it a little bit. The very old pads deserved to be washed. I used "Woolite express" for washing and the results are very good. I can clearly recommend it for washing velour pads. Next canditate for washing is my old HD580. Additionaly I had to replace the lacking foam that was once over the drivers. There are also some cotton dampers situated over the drivers. I removed and washed them also. After the pads and cotton dampers were dry enough, I refitted them, while I also added a replacement for the old foam. I used an old and very often washed t-shirt made of very fine cotton and cutted two round circles out of it. Just place the pads on the t-shirt, draw a circle outline around it and cut the circles out with a pair of scissors. The results are very good. I wouldn't say the fine cotton replacment is acousticaly benefical, but I can clearly comment it has absolutely no negative effect on SQ. And it looks good. Almost like the cloth used by AKG to protect the drivers of the K702. Most likely it is also much more durable than the original foam and it would be very easy to replace it again. I have enough often washed old t-shirts. Now I have a real problem: I can't decide if I should use the K702's or the HD560's. They both sound heavenly. HD560 Ovation II together with a X-CAN V2 is a very good combination.

Well done! If you nabbed them cheap they are good value. I've owned a pair from new (freebie while in the trade).
Yep, I'd agree with that, but they do not have subtleties of the 580/600/650 either and can can get a little tiresome on long listens. This is mainly due the HFs being a little rough, in comparison to others over smooth presentation.
It may even tidy up the HF roughness, hopefully not effecting anything else adversely. I did try the stocking mod on them but the foam was returned promptly, just too nasty with the tights.
Are your 702s well run in? Meaning many hundreds of hours. Mike has said before they can take a year of regular use to "get there" and I fully concur.
To my ears, with my equipment (I have a Xcanv2 too, modded) my 701s wipe the floor with the 560 OvII, in every department.
I also have some AKG K280s, not quite as comfy as the 560 but on balance I find these preferable too. Better definition in the bass, acoustic instruments and voices seem a tad more reallistic though the HFs are very similar.
Give those 702s a verrrrrrrry long chance, the best is yet to come.

I know: The K702's need VERY LOOOONNNGGG break-in time. There're around 150 hours at the moment.
I'm almost sure the K702's will still be the favorite of my headphones. But for the moment the HD560 Ov. II is very interesting. And it draws off my attention from K702 who still needs more break-in time. The K702 gets a radio diet furthermore.
I got the HD560's cheap and the small mod was very easy to do.

Mike.

These are the same pair Mike. They've pretty much just been sitting on my desk.
I'll run some more hours up on the over the next couple of weeks, and see what happens. (probably not got more than 50-60 hours on now)

I would have been tempted had I seen them, given that it's likely they were an old (pre-heat-dispersing rings - ie "good") pair.

Me three... I can't see anything different to Mike's pair in mine (just going from photos)... and yet this amazing bass that everyone speaks of is nonexistant. They've got at least 150 hours on them.
