Andy, you say you have added damping and tightened the trannies and that though the hum is reduced it's still there.
Well have you tried this; loosen the fixings and, cables permitting twist the trannies relative to each other. You will need the amp on to tell if there is a difference. naturally take all safety precautions - you can in fact buy special rubber gloves and as always keep one hand in your pocket ( but not wrapped round your nuts). Should you get a 230V 'touch' it won't arc across your heart.

Not sure I want to know about your 'special rubber gloves'!!
But you have a good idea there, i guess somthing about the magnetic feilds crossing? I should be able to give each a slight twist, there is not much play though.
I will try that one next weekend when i can get away from my 7 month old for two mins!!

Did once see a chap 'checking' a camlock, about 600 Amps 3 phase, whilst stood in a puddle. He is still alive. though there was a funny smell when someone shouted that it was live.
Maybe he needed some special rubber gloves?

These gloves are a bit on the large size but will protect you from getting a wack.
I was working on a valve amp once when a friend of mine called round and I was wearing them (there was 650V in there).
As soon as he saw them he said "WOW if my friends at the Fetish Club saw them they'd have to go and buy some immediately.
When I asked him what they would be used for he said "definately not for testing valve amps" - I would tell you what they would be used for but you might just have had your lunch.
