Does anyone have experience of optical out to spdif converters?
I want to try the SQ of a Panasonic EX88 into my X-Dac V8 which sacrificed optical input for USB.
Thanks, juke

What a ripoff ! Not so long back, Silicon Chip magazine designed one of those, the whole kit (without the plugpack) sold for a little less than the amount of postage requested.

Thanks for the reference, but wrong side of the world! As SandyK says its a bit expensive. I do see a number of these devices for sale in UK but a lot are so cheap I doubt, but don't know, if they're any good. There don't seem to be many reviews of them.
SandyK
I checked out the Silicon Chip website and I can get the article. Apparently according to another forum Jaycar did a kit for it but it is no longer available.
The article seems to indicate its a simple circuit so maybe inexpensive ready built ones can be good.
I want to hear how good the disc player part of my new EX88 is, compared to the Oppo, but as I said I have no way of connecting to the X-Dac V8. I have the X-Dac V3 awaiting the SandyK style treatment so I can try that for now but the issue is the space needed to house it all!
Thanks for the replies, juke

juke Jaycar did indeed have a kit, that is no longer stocked, and it is very simple. I actually made one and put it aside for the day I might need the facilities. Alex

Miguel
I came across your suggested box on a number of UK dealers' sites and also the same converter as Alex suggested but in UK therefore no duty VAT and admin fees (often the dearest part!) I think for now I'll go with the Jaycar type as in UK its £11 and appears identical. As I said to Alex earlier it seems Jaycar are well regarded for good stock so worth a try. If I have any doubts I'll try the CO2 model, its about £35 and works both ways, which I don't need.

Your suggestion looks excellent for building in, thanks, but the other two are a much easier solution for my test purposes.

Hi Juke, After you have done it and compared with without the converter, please report back. I'm quite confident it wouldn't be as good as direct in since now there is another stage of convertion added. Just that you have no choice there. That I understand.

Good morning Syd, I presume you want to connect the optical out from your Panasonic to the SPDIF in on the DAC, am I correct? If so you could try this little contraption from CPC: cpc.farnell.com/unbranded/pof-830/optical-to-coax-adaptor/dp/AV12737?in_merch=I used one a few years back in my AV set up and it seemed to perform well, although it was never a case of using it for critical listening just movie soundtracks etc. As always I could pick one up for you if you wish, I'll be nipping up there over the next couple of days. Cheers Matt

Matt
Thanks for the offer but this is the one that is on its way, but 2/3 the price! Yours that is. (I'll be in touch soon when I list the parts for the A3)

Now if you really wanted to piss Alex then add a valve. Wow, that will be the first digital tube PCM converter when the tube can take that kind of bandwidth. Now, which tube in the catalogue can take that bandwidth? It will be really excitng to have one invented, btw.
