How cool would a heatsink be for this chip made from a stack of Crownie bottle tops- great reason to buy a 6 pack for tomorrow evening- all in the quest for diy audio excellence of course No, forget the crownie 6 pack, slab of Carlton Draught instead- lots of heat sinks then.

Robert Re your photo in reply 45 : It should be possible to retain both the toggle switch and the SPDIF input socket, by placing a link where the diode used to be, and inserting a PCB pin into the now vacant pad alongside the link for +VE supply.PCB pins are also readily fitted to the other 2 locations that you have -VE and 0V connected to. thank goodness the right packages got delivered to the right people ;D but more importantly think of the on going R&D I don't think you guys fully realise the enormity of this, for example sure a crown seal but what does a Pure Blonde bring to the table for say jazz and what about boutique brews well there is also the international offerings. I can see this is going to be a long session Robert

I don't think this LM4562HA can is going to make into my SCHA, even with 30 min on the clock in my DAC its a clear step up in SQ from the plastic version. In the order, if not more, of a blu-ray burned CD-R compared to std CD/DVD burned CD-R. Its going to be very interesting to see just how much better this thing will get after a few days burn in. And with my DAC opamp PSU + JLH only running at +/-12V at present, there's possibly still more to be ringed out of it. Good find Alex, great initiative Robert. cheers guys .. jeffc

jeff Perhaps you shouldn't waste any time seeing if Robert has any left ! It WILL get better in around 12 hours or so on the clock. Alex P.S. What kind of heatsink have you fitted ?

Aaargh! drill bits and transistors came today, but no exciting package from the other side of the world!
I hope the postal services aren't using the same sea-turtle that they used for my Jaycar stuff!
Sounds like it'll be worth the wait.

Hi Alex, none at present , but left on overnight it isn't that hot, probably as its only on a +/-12V supply. Will check again this arvo and if need be, place a small V regulator heat sink on it. Robert, the DAC opamp has 47uf tants bypassed by 0.1uf ceramic SMD and 0.001uf silver mica caps, all within a bee's dick of the DIP socket. I'll shoot you a pic. I have some 2.2 uf tants but these would need to be fitting under the DIP and any extra SM caps I'd probably have to fit directly across +/- opamp supply pins. Might not gain too much seeing the closeness of the caps already there. ;D cheers.. jeffc

Will - I wish my transistors would arrive Starting to get a little concerned. The paper I ordered from the states a few days after the transistor order, arrived Monday... I've thrown my metal can 4562 into my soundcard... Sounds good I'm listening to an old favourite album... Jean Michel Jarre's 'Aero', via Fostex monitors (which were decidedly less revealing than the Novo/HD600 when I had it), and rather enjoying myself. Can't wait to complete the scha... ;D

OK .... 24h on the dial and the LM4572HA is moving into serious Zen-ness territory in my DAC . Hard to believe it has the same innards as the plastic opamp, awesome detail and realism in spades. You guys still waiting on one are in for a real treat, its one damn opamp. cheers.. jeffc

OK.. Temporary heat sink cut from a old CPU heat sink fixed using pressure sensitive double-sided tape to the LM4562HA opamp in my elcheapo DAC. DAc has liberal use of silver mica/sanyo oscon decoupling caps. Local guys, won't go into a Pauline Hanson on this here Heat sink fin temp cool to touch so my guess <30C, so all good in this respect. here's a pic However, whilst unlikely to be an issue in the SCHA, I've noticed that when speakers are in action, this heat sink vibrates like the clappers.. not good. Possibly aided by the small guage of the LM4563HA wires and their slightly longer length for shaping required to fit the DIP socket when compared to those of the plastic-cased opamp. Maybe just right to resonate at whatever frequency. Anyways, something to consider as it will not aid SQ. I've got a little viscoelastic tape with an aluminum restraining layer for vibration dampening of gear like computer hard drives that I'm going to try to fashion into a heat sink and see how this goes as an alternative. Some info on this tape www.can-dotape.com/tech-data-2552.htmlcheers.. jeffc

show off next you'll be sending links to X-rated videos you've starred in Back to matters more serious , if I get time today I'll test the 3M viscoelastic damping tape as I can only pinpoint the added vibration of the heat sink in quashing some of the opamp's magic with it running nude. cheers.. jeffc

Problem solved and even more mojo with the LM4562HA wrapped in viscoelastic damping material. Unbelievable . Can't see it, but there is a single layer of damping material also wrapped around the case of the opamp. Top pieces extended to increase surface area to dissipate at least some of the heat. Maybe internal solidity/damping by the LM4562HA being encased in resin is another reason for its improved SQ, and the viscoelastic material is aiding this further. In any case, I am simply gob-smacked at how good this thing is. Starting to sound like MERTON, sorry ;D another pic cheers.. jeffc
