Having had my 5.1 system reduced to two tiny little Ariston Monitors that I picked up for £20 a few years ago and my Yamaha Centre I am in dire need of a decent pair of small bookshelf speakers to replace the Aristons. My two mains and two rears are in storage as they are just too big for my Girlfriends pad. (No they really are I'm not under the thumb honest ;D ) Luckily my Yamaha centre is almost as wide as the TV so that helps make up for the deficiencies in the Aristons but some nice bookshelf speakers would no doubt liven things up a lot. They need to be no more than about 6 or 7 inches wide and 9 or 10 inches tall. Any suggestions gratefully received Ian PS Are the JBL Control 1 speakers as good as they are made out to be?

Control 1s are efficient; go very loud on a few Watts for a tiny box. Harden up when driven hard - not surprisingly. Very good piano tone IIRC. Derek

Cheers Derek. I may well give a pair a go. They're only an inch or so taller than the Aristons and half an inch wider. My Girlfriend has agreed to them in principle too

Some interesting stuff there Chong but unfortunately it's all either too big, too expensive or both. I keep returning to the JBL Control 1s. The Kef C1s look interesting but apparently lack midrange and are more of a satellite speaker. I 'm sure Graham had some Control 1s but I can't find a post to confirm that.

Are 2nd hand in the running? If so you could pick up some AVI Nuetron or NuNuetron for roughly the same as RRP on JBL C1s. Below is a link for latest version, general look and size are very similar, although you'll most likely find them in a light cherry finish. www.avihifi.com/Neutron/Neutron%20IV.htmlIf your amp is standard fare, i.e lower range Yamaha etc, then these may not sing to potential, if better (good drive) they will do a great job.

The little Ushers are not bad, for the size and price the Control 1's will probably be your best bet tbh

interesting they are the speaker equivalent to crystal type earphones over priced underrated and sold on brand perception, ouch Robert Impressive specs. I bet they aren't too affordable for most people, though ! Alex there is a lot of stuff out there but alas it's all in the rarefied affordability levels for some, er most, me especially but you have to admit they would look good on the over sized book shelf with maybe a 3mtr CRT front projector screen between them, anyways if you could afford them I doubt there would be any GF issues she would be more then happy in the Greek Isles or where ever else you'd choose to abode Meanwhile I'll stick with my exceptional value for money Behringer 2030P's for sides and rears Robert

Well I ended up going for some Control 1s. I phoned the local Richer Sounds and they had one pair left in stock. I got them for the internet price of £49.95 instead of £59.95. They are a big step up from my little Aristons but still benefit greatly from my Yamaha Centre. The over all sound is quite nice. The Yamaha centre brings some much needed detail and warmth to the midrange. I've balanced the centre down to -5.5db so it's gently adding to the music rather than overpowering it. Overall the Control ones are a very worthwhile purhase and as they look worse in silver with the grills on, the GF has let me leave them off. This also prompted me to let her hear how the Yam centre sounds with it's cover removed. She was impressed so the Yam cover is off now. Yay! There's a guy at work that swears by Bose. (Shouldn't that be swears at ) You should have seen his face when I stuck the HD595s running out of the Novo on his head. He muttered something about it sounding quite good and made a hasty retreat LOL.

I missed a pair at 35 pounds a little while back - so even if you have them a year and then sell at 35 then 'renting' them for a year for 15 quid is a good deal. Musical little devils aren't they? Do a good impression of bass too. Very punchy? When my youngest son had his pair he ran them from a 25W Cambridge a1 amp - great match; budget kit working well together. Derek

Well I ended up going for some Control 1s. So did I. We needed better sound in the bedroom. We use a small LCD widescreen TV in there and sound from such a skinny cabinet is TERRIBLE. I had a spare (Sony 50W) amp so got a pair of Control Ones. They've changed a little since I last knew them, cabinet construction is a bit simpler, but the sound is still great. I have even had them running on my big MF amp downstairs - they are stupidly good for the money. With a bit of help from my MJ sub they are frighteningly good. So now that there is the potential for good sound in the bedroom I have put a FM aerial in the loft above and added a cheap Ariston tuner I bought ages ago (Richer Sounds again). It don't half go loud. Derek

no highs, no lows, it must be Bose!
This company has built its reputation on what you can leave out. They have "research" to prove what we don't need and what gets masked. Sounds like a perfect match for internet radio!

Sounds like a perfect match for internet radio! Robin Sounds more like a perfect match for Classical LP recordings ! BTW, "Love Over Gold" sounds even better than you heard, when ripped directly to my 32GB Corsair Voyager GT USB 2.0 pen, and played directly from there. Even better again, if the front HDD fan is switched off during the ripping. Regards Alex
