Would anybody hazard a guess as to how much better these would sound than a £200 pair of headphones.
Are we entering the zone of diminishing returns, or would my ears cry with ecstasy?

From one of the videos I saw these look absolutely huge. It covered the entire side of the guys head...That chair image just might not be so strange after-all.

I wonder if what they add in sound quality is worth the premium price tag. In my opinion paying a 1000 gbp for a pair of cans is rediculous. My wallet was already crying when I bought the K-701's for 280 euro's.

I heard from a friend from London this evening who has heard a pair & said they sound incredible so although the price is extreme who knows, they just might be worth it. After all, if any company should know, Sennheiser should know how to produce high quality headphones. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, I would love to have the opportunity to hear a pair.

I heard a very convincing argument for high-end/expensive headphones.
If you dropped a £1000 on a pair of loudspeakers, you are starting to get to the point where they may be compromised by the room they are in or having to meet wifely approval. There is also the factor that you may not be able to fully enjoy them at a decent volume, due to neighbours, it being nighttime or other 'you cant play it loud' restrictions. Lots of reasons why you wont get the full benefit of the money spent.
However, spend the same money on a pair of headphones, and nearly all of the above factors are addressed, along with with it being easier to hide the apparent cost vs. speakers, from the wife!
Mind you, removing your own self limiter with arguments like the above, could be a dangerous thing!

Especially hiding the cost from the wife! Nigel and Will But what happens when she does find out the real cost ? After all, you do need to keep receipts for warranty claims . Alex

One thing is for sure. I wouldn't even contemplate getting the HD800s unless I could audition them in my own rig vs my AKG K701s for at least a few days and then they'd have to be pretty bloody awesome before I decided to drop that amount of cash.

Anyone know which amp Sennheiser are choosing to demonstrate the HD800's with at the recent trade shows? One would assume that Senn UK are still using the Graham Slee Solo? Maybe our Graham can confirm this.

According to Issue 65 of Hi-Fi+, received yesterday, Sennheiser used the Lehmann Black Cube Linear which they also review in the magazine.
They rate the 800s very highly and say they really project the sound out in front of you with a speaker-like sound stage and great detail. Syd
