Hi Alex, Be as picky as you feel necessary, particularly when safety is an issue. I've been bitten by 240V once, luckily on the back of the hand, which promptly flung my arm out behind my back. Also I used to run equipment in the lab at >1600V back in the days when covers were an annoying accessory and got stung by a short to an aluminum plate, luckily again it was the back of my hand and lowish current. Sooooo, its good to get a safety reminder now and again. And thanks for the earthing explanation, again I think, and tips on keeping noise out of cables and its effects on SQ. cheers.. Jeff

Jeff I have posted some time back, that years ago , I was thrown against a wardrobe, and couldn't immediately answer when somebody asked if I was O.K. I have also had my 2nd wife's young daughter leaning over me and asking if I was alright. I couldn't answer for about a minute! That time I accidentally touched one of those uncovered mains terminals on the older style transformer with multiple voltage tappings. Needless to say, it got covered the same as you have done , to protect me from my own carelessness. I was lucky ! I survived. Can an older ticker recover so readily ? Alex

"Can an older ticker recover so readily ?" Dunno Alex, I turn the big 50 this year, and thought you might be a little older, certainly wiser. I would prefer not to do the test to find out anyway so touch wood, here's to being careful with electrons. cheers.. Jeff

Cheesy Maplin case and crappy Ansar caps which I need to change out ASAP The Maplins case may be cheesy Leo but they are cheap and serve a purpose, also they have a lot of handy mounting points so you don't have to faff about with stand offs and things..... the only real downside is they are plastic and look like shite. I like your positioning of the attenuator mate, one assumes you'll be fitting a nice ROD onto it? Nothing quite like fitting an extension rod is there?

Yep, I got a rod, just need the bit for joining it TBH I don't really adjust the vol much so not been in a rush to fit it. I like to keep signal wires as short as possible, I'll cut them down some more once I'm 100% happy with the amp
Thing I like about the Craplin case is its damn easy getting at the pcb, taking it out
Soon as I can find decent coupling caps I'll fit the extension rod and get the lid screwed on ;D

here's mine resplendent in the el cheapo Maplin enclosure.... a few bits to tidy up but this is pretty much as it will be when I bolt the lid down (a rewire using shielded cable and a couple of cap swaps) Mike what are this big orange drop caps? Manufacturer, model? AFAIK - this are the input caps

I think Mike has said that they were salvaged from my Darkvoice when he carried out mods to it.

John It's so much easier when you have plenty of room, isn't it ? I use a case like that for the trialling of different ideas. Alex

Jesus Christ mate, you could fit a 3 piece suite and coffee table in that enclosure Nice work and plenty of room for expansion What do you think of the amp now it's up and running? Mike.

John,Nick etc. Have you tried RS Components for the 2SA1930/2SC5171 ? I just checked, and they were available for backorder, but check with RS for approximate delivery times. It could be worthwhile for the "Westies" to buy a quantity between themselves, leaving enough for future JLHs?
2SC5171(Q)RS Stock No. 601-6405 Manufacturer Toshiba RoHS Status RoHS certificate of compliance Quantity Price (ex. GST) Each (In a Pack of 5) 5 $1.18 50 $1.00 200 $0.77

Ah bugger, just ordered the items from wes supplies. Not too worried about losing out on the price when the transistors are being put in the post today. Got a few days off work and it is too hot to be outside, time to start soldering John,Nick etc. Have you tried RS Components for the 2SA1930/2SC5171 ? Nick It's damn hot enough INSIDE today at Ryde, let alone at Richmond ! You might be at the foothills of the Blue Mountains, but they only make it colder for you in Winter, compared to Sydney. Alex

Colder in winter and hotter in summer, there is a local saying about Richmond, but the language used would make Rodney Rude blush, let alone civilised audio diyers.

Woah Bro ! What's with all that heavy metal between the driving source and the amp ? Counting from whatever you have driving the SCHA I come up with: RCA Jack>RCA Plug>Cable>RCA Plug>RCA Jack>Cable>RCA Plug>RCA Jack ! a DAMN lot of hardware beteen two points that is has a serious potential for signal degradation and possible loss of signal integrity at some point if/when one of those "never should have been selected for high quality audio use" RCA jacks goes south on you the connection not one that is gas tight so even though high on the "looks cool" side of the coin you would be better off losing the pcb mounted connector and hardwiring the input jacks directly to the pcb pads
