Matt Sounds like a real success story ! A good shunt regulator can make a world of difference as you have just discovered. I use a JLH to supply all of my Class A preamp, and another JLH to supply the front end of my 15W/Ch. Class A amplifier. I even use a JLH in the outboard PSU for the whole of my X-DAC V3. There may be slightly better shunt regulators around than the JLH, but as it is voltage non-specific, it can be used straight after any 7815/7915 and LM317/LM337 voltage regulator .Some people even claim that it works well with Audio-GD modules ! Why don't you make one and experiment , as it can simply be connected inline with most dual polarity voltage regulated supplies. I feel sure you will find a use for one somewhere. Alex P.S. It can even be configured to give 2 +VE supplies of different voltages, if need be.

Cheers Alex, I think I've just found my project for the summer months: How much performance can be wrung from an MF A3?
With better regualtion no doubt the quad version of the LM4562 would sit quite nicely in there. No distortion like it was when I tried it before.

Cheers Insomniac, that's exactly what I was thinking of! Question: did you just happen to have that lying around? Are there any banks safe from you in Ireland? No, I had to dig it up first... a quick spray with WD40 and there you have it Yes of course some banks are safe... the bottle bank and sperm bank tend to go unnoticed

I thought of the Sterling SMG when I first saw it: Cool modifications and that looks like an F2, 9mm open breach firing SMG Indeed Robert, just what the doctor ordered for keeping those pesky sparrows away from the newly planted seeds in the garden

Glad to hear it.
Is this what people can expect if they don't pay up for an Earth module?

Matt, Nice job on the case, maybe it helps shoot the music out! If I had need for a DAC I would surely follow your lead. I found a possible case for your A3 project Might even get a modified A370 in there!

Cheers, I'm not sure whether it'll have the same rack presence, well more that it would supplant the whole rack!

Well, it's been a while since I updated this thread to show the final tweaks. I've had the hacksaw and dremel out again in order to fit some of Dave's (Insomniac) Earth modules in the X-24K in the buffer positions and some metal can LME49720HAs as I/Vs. I must just say that the sound produced by the Earth modules are simply stunning. Basslines are deep, taught and fast, mids are wonderfully sweet with vocals superbly nuanced, treble is pin sharp and not at all fatiguing. The air and presence within recordings has to be heard to be believed, separation has edged up in to a different class and dynamics are simply stunning. I seriously cannot note a single area where these are inferior to any other opamp I've tried in this wee beastie. Ok, the looks are now something of an acquired taste with the mods I've had to do accomodate them, someone said the DAC now looks like a steam train on skis but that really isn't my primary concern. The sound it produces ensures its looks are completely irrelevant to me. Anyway, pictures (apologies for quality): (Click on above images for larger pictures) In the last photo you can just about make out the Earths shoehorned in to the DAC. I've used on of Maplin's ABS boxes with a hole in the bottom glued in place to enable removal of the modules if I need to get access to the innards at any future juncture. A big thanks to Dave as his service and assistance was truly first class. I've also got a couple of his Sun modules shoehorned in to my A3 amp to great affect replacing the quad opamp (MC33079P, same as that in the V-Cans!): Anyway, save to say I am finally happy with the sound this combo produces. Many thanks again to all who helped in the project, especially Mike, Alex, Dave and Leo. *Edit* Especially as this will be my last post, unwarranted abuse thinly veiled (and excused) as plain speaking has become far too frequent on here. I wish you all well, goodnight. To quote a certain T. Balir, "That is that, the end". Cheers Matt

Apologies to all, I seemed to have a momentary petulant hissy fit last night. Somehow I became all sensitive and thin skinned.
Sorry Mike, I too seemed to have been posting at less than optimum moments. I think I'm a bit stressed at the moment, thus my unwarranted sensitivity. After the help etc you guys have shown I really don't know why I reacted so strongly. Sorry.
P.S. Can you please remove my edit from reply #84 as it is really not my true thoughts on this place, or its members. I feel a touch embarrassed. I seem to have lost my ability to modify it after deleting the account last night.
Cheers Claus, much appreciated. BTW, the knowledge is strictly limited, very limited. As at the moment is my common sense.
Cheers all, once again apologies.
Matt

I think it was somewhere around the 180 mark, but it really doesn't matter.
Cheers

Don't worry about it Matt. Sometimes Mike's early morning posts can do that to you . Especially when you are tired or out of form yourself. Welcome back. Regards Alex
