What are these like compared to the likes of the HD 600 or HD 650? (Currently gone back to the HD 600 for listening) In my opinion, and remember I've only had them since yesterday, they are a lot more accurate than the HD-600 and accurate in a singalong kind of way, not accurate in a bore the pants off you clinical kind of way. The soundstage is far superior to the HD-600 there is not only width there is also depth and height. The sound is a lot more organic too, the HD-600 sound quite chocolaty and dark in comparison. I've tried them with the Mr. Doudou singer amp, MF X-Can v2 and X-Can v3 and all three of these amps make a superb job of driving them..... both the v2 and v3 are modded and the v3 resembling quite a contraption as I sit here and type this: HD-600 have been with me for years and I know them and love them like the back of my hand. If someone said "you can keep one pair what's it going to be?" Most definitely K-701.

Wow thats amazing i might just get a pair. I did some looking around, and I've read some other compassions to the 600 and the 701 came top. Also something i seem to be lacking is sound stage. I let my dad listen to my setup and he also said theres no sound stage, I'm listening in 2D . I do want to try out that Mr DouDou, already emailed to say I'd like to buy one. Note to Self: Patients

Mike, please listen to "Hubert von Goisern - Kren oder Speck" the drum solo - and then you can say "thats live" - I had never heared this so as live as with K701!!!! The one with the cowbells? yes, it's extremely realistic sounding if you shut your eyes you'd swear you were in the audience. I haven't listened to Hubert for quite a while, thanks for reminding me about him. The K-701 also make a bloody good job of the Beatles - Love album, I was actually singing along and almost burst into tears when I listened to "something", it brought back memories of an ex girlfriend, now that IS the sign of of music at it's best when it can bring out emotions in you..... not a lot of headphones have managed to do that to me, the K-701 are pretty special in that respect. Hubert yodelling at the moment!

...you really are rather impulsive Mike... Fortunately, I've got my K701 before you so my wallet will not suffer because of your last enthusiastic experience... Yes, I also find K701 to be allround better than HD600. But unlike you, methinks that, at least my "PinkFloyded" V2, does not drive it as firmly as Solo does... especialy when Solo has a heatsinked AD8397 on a BrownDog adapter inside. They are sooooo power hungry! It certainly seems that Rickmonster's suggestion of K701's resemblance to the muscle cars from the past is not only based on the looks. The only thing that drives me crazy about them is that f***n headband that is a couple of centimeters too short for my head and my headphone positioning preference that it gets really painful during longer listening sessions. Still, they are great phones and they are my No. 2. The No. 1 are, thanks to you and this site, the W1000. Still experimenting with those AT woodies and they are getting better and better...

I have AT A900 and AKG K701's, although the A900's are very good I find the K701's quicker, more accurate The thing I'm interested in is how those AT 1000's compare against the K701's

Congratulations, Mike, on your new found love. I've resisted purchasing any more headphones for a few years now, but if I ever fall off the wagon, the 701s would be one of the pairs I wouldn't hesitate to buy. They are, even to these old ears, GREAT sounding (and looking) headphones. Enjoy.

...you really are rather impulsive Mike... Well..... it is my birthday today and I really couldn't think of anything I'd like better than a new pair of Austrian headphones ;D You must be referring to the W-1000? Ah!....... yes, erm..... I got them for my birthday too! I didn't know it at the time but have since classed them as "birthday 'phones".... I can justify the purchase as "non impulsive advanced birthday gift" ;D Far better IMO. I have yet to try them with the Solo and look forward to trying it..... I currently have a modded X-can v3 burning in with them.... next in rotation is the Graham running stock AD-823 though I will try the AD8397 too Yup, they sure do benefit from plenty of juice Welcome to team melon head! I am on FULL extension and they "just" fit on my bald medicine ball..... if I had hair there is no way they would be a comfortable fit, AKG should maybe extend the range of the headband a bit so team melon head members can enjoy them as well as team standard noggin members. I have yet to do a shoot out between K-701 and W-1000..... one thing is for SURE, I now have three pairs of definite keepers and they are (in no particular order) HD-600, K-701 and ATH W-1000....

I'm interested in your thoughts of the 701's with the Solo Mike. Any chance to try the combination yet?
