Until you have the W5000 burn-in for a number of hours; I would say at least 200 I don't think you can attribute your harshness to the headphone yet or your source. Just have a little more patience and things may come together without the source update.

soulmate for my yamamoto ha-2 headmp, the w5000 arrive today initial impression of the w5000 on the yamamoto in compare to the k701 is: better detail, music sound more refined and realistic. Hi Minivan, you know as much as I tout the W-5000's her on this forum, I have rediscovered my AKG-701's with my newly modded Audio Alchemy Headphone amp v.1, a class A amp with the National Semiconductor op amp upgrade and power supply upgrade as well. These AKG's are re-energized here. This newly modded amp grabs these speaker drivers and, for a better word, drives em! This amp is not as open and revealing as the Solo Green, but it seems to have a fuller more powerful sound. Very different sounding amps, indeed, and very different sounding headphones the AKG-701 and ATH-W5000's are. The amp is a 1996 model, modded by Reference Audio Mods here in the Detroit area. This is so cool having 2 great, different sounding amps and 2 different sounding headphones. Since I'm a pack rat and can't seem to part with any of my acquisitions, I'm really glad I held onto the AKG's as they sound great on some recordings that the Slee Solo Green and ATH-W5000 combo ultra analyze. Sometimes the recordings don't deserve all that insight. And the AKG-701's + AudioAlchemy works, then. John

john, like u, i have the k07 as well as the w5000. after listening to the w5000 for the last few days, i can start to notice the diff between the 2. the k701 has a wider soundstage and slightly laid back , darker presentation, dry and more analytic mid, sometimes i prefer the wider soundstage and darker presentation of the k701, i found it more relaxing. the w5000 have a better refined mid and bass. it has a more upfront presentation. like u ,vocal on the w5000 yamamoto combo sound very engaging and real. i found the w5000 is very unforgiving with bad source and record, it just pick up anything that's there. with the sound signature of the solo green, i can imagine it will has great sygnegy with the w5000, let's hope graham slee can replace my faulty solo green sooner, so i can enjoy the solo/w5000 combo like u did.

I found the same difference between my K701 and the W1000. Very interesting!

This may be of no significance to some, but as a spectacle wearer, my previous experience with supra-aural HP was not good, I found them to press my ears against my spectacle frames It is essential that you have to see when you're listening?

For some of the music I prefer the K701 and for other the W1000. Today I started using my Equation RP21 again. I will have to do a side by side w/ the W1000 over the weekend. Both are closed cans, one is beautiful looking can made of wood w/ a discounted price of about $375. The other is a plastic not to good to look at for about $100. Is the sound from the W1000 worth an almost 4-fold increase? I will have to find out and report my observations here. ;D

how do u find the k501 in compare to the k701? i listened to some1's k501 in the headphone meet and was blow away by the k501, all the sound signature of the akg is there, except it sound like music delivered witout curtain on. since then i am always think about the option of selling my k701 and buy the k501 . i will have my w1000 coming end of the year, will compare the w5000 and the w1000 and see if the w5000 is worth the double increase in cost.

I have a K501 as well and I love it. Some will state that it does not have a lot of bass, and compared w/ the Equation RP21 or my RS-1 it has less bass indeed. However what it has is more than enough for me and the mids are extremely clear and detailed, with a very unbiased presentation. To me the the K501 are the Etymotic ER4S of the full size cans.
You can still find the K501 although they are getting hard to find new or at least in good shape. If you can get one I would strongly recommend it.

I read that somebody removed one of the foam pads from inside their K701's, it seems they have 2 in each can, I can't remember where I read it now

Hate you guys... Just ordered W-1000 from PriceJapan. And to think that I started on this site with noisy left channel of a standard X-Can V2 and HD-600... Now my V2 has almost all tweaks suggested (CAT5 included) here along with 4 pairs of tubes for rolling sports... and I got Grado SR-80... then Rick suggested HagUSB... then Goldring DR-150 came along... then added Paradisea+ DAC as a help to my notebook source , then tried LM3875 gainclone as headamp, then AKG K-701... and now, just that I burned my credit card on ATH W-1000, I am wandering whether or not to persuade Graham to build me a Green Solo for that low price... 8) I am addicted. I hate you guys soooo much... (in Eric Cartman's voice if possible) ;D V3 P.S. ...and to think that problem which brought me here was due to left channel JAN 6922 dirty pins...

Hi Miguel, Months ago Mike had written a couple of lines about how bypassing signal tracks improved V2 clarity: rockgrotto.proboards39.com/index.cgi?board=q&action=display&thread=1182003092&page=1#1182893676 This bug just entered my head and did not let me go... So, about a month after Mike's post, when I decided to swap the standard V2 pot with ALPS pot, I also decided to bypass input tracks and input caps (those BTW were already long gone) by soldering a 10-15 cm CAT5 cable from input resistors/caps directly to the ALPS pot pins. To me - it made a difference. Positive difference. If you are interested in more details, I suggest to continue the conversation about it on the thread linked in this post. Bye Miguel - my brother in addiction

I read that somebody removed one of the foam pads from inside their K701's, it seems they have 2 in each can, I can't remember where I read it now Hi Leo, do you think that may remove some of the fog the 701's seem to have? I mean when I switch back to the W-5000's on the AudioAlchemy amp, it's like a HUGE veil has been lifted. But, just jamming along with the 701's on this amp is, in it's own way, great. I'm hearing everything, just not as super analytical as the AT's. RAM here in Detroit is goiing to replace the 701's cord with a silver single wire in cotton (or something like that), so we'll see if that helps. One of my customer's had Jena Labs do their thing to his AKG's. I've not heard them as of yet, but I'll be happy to report on this mega priced upgrade (the Jena one) when I get the chance to hear them. The silver wire in cotton connector will have to wait until after the holidays, but I'm a gonna go and try and get this headphone set to sound better. I just feel and hear that improvements can be had with the AKG's. Also read where the W-5000 benefit from a better cord as well. MORE INSIGHT?? I don't know if can stand to hear any further into the recording. If you find out where you saw the removal of the second pad, Leo, please let us know. It seems me and minivan still like our AKG's enough to keep em. Thanks, John

Hi minivan, I just clicked on your link and did not get the right page - huh ? then I noticed the ,24710.html part was not in blue, so copy/pasted the whole line and found the article. Pulled the earpad off one side of my K701 to have a look - mine are not as his description, they have only one piece of foam with a hole in the middle, this is actually visible through the mesh as you can see the centre of the driver. Might be worth a quick look before taking off the earpad. I ended up leaving them as they are.

I had a look in mine today and also noticed they have one thick piece of circular foam for each cup. I wonder if its worth cutting a piece of material thats thinner than that which comes in the K701's and swap it for the thick stuff

I have not seen the need to remove the foam, IMO the K701 sounds great just as it is.
