Yup, Mike, indeed - and that's not the only problem I have over there lately. I'm also rather concerned about the growing trend to jump fron some entry-level solution right into the $$$$ playfield with no steps in between. Sometimes I wonder how many of 'em actually end up asking themselves after a couple of months, whether their high-price aquisitions are in fact complete overkill for their use, but of course would never publicly admit that....
What almost made me explode, however, was that recent "head-fier of the year" thread - 'cause who almost made it was that Nordost Valhalla fanboy, who in my opinion is quite obviously completely nuts. That tells a lot, I'd say...

I wasn't too happy either considering I should have been Head-Fier of the century......... team ego.... out! Well, I had actually suggested you - with something like "I nominate PinkFloyd for... well... being most human, I guess,", but the post was deleted rather quickly. I found that a bit pitiful, considering that my statement was adequately ambiguous.... The resulting pm debate with Jude was fairly interesting, though - and I must confess that I can in fact understand his points to a certain degree. Still, I would have expected a bit more sovereignty on his side... Greetings from Munich! Manfred / lini

I have written to hificablesandaccessories.co.uk asking what the shipment to South Africa would cost. No answer.... I also try to get a quote on the shipment of a Goldring G2 Turntable from various UK sources. Same thing.... Is there a embargo on audio equipment that I'm not aware of? Stefan

Stefan That's strange Stefan, try again this time sending to Robert: robert@audiowithvision.co.uk (Robert from hificablesandaccessories.co.uk ) All the best. Mike. PS: no embargo I know of unless they mistook you for Robert Mugabe (highly unlikely)

pinkFloyd, do you still feel as strongly about the goldring, since more time has passed? the only mod u did was remove that thin cloth at the back? all cans should make it so easy to recable if you so choose. Peace, MaN227

I have got used to them ... try them with a good amp (in your home set up) .. they are surprisingly good. Not grado or Senn good (typically the dynamics aren't quite as good with my Shure ER4C) ... but there's a surprising amount of space, good imaging, great detail .. very linear and natural - all said very accomplished, and if you had full size headphones, performance you could be happy with .. especially the natural/well balanced sound they produce. BUT by far their benefit is that they leak no noise, AND silence the background. Great to silence out the wife's crap TV programmes.

Even more so Man, they are superb for the money and superb if they were 4 times the price. They respond well to amplification but are equally at home connected to the output of an ipod. They're pretty consistent between different types of amplifier and there is honestly no area of their performance that I would dare to criticise. They are most definitely keepers and have a lovely feel about them whatever you throw at them, they're probably the most adaptable / willing headphones I have ever heard and not a pair that require specialist amplification.... they have gelled and excelled with everything I have plugged them into. Soundstage is not a mile wide but the presentation is intimate and enjoyable with a great insight into the mix. They possess a lovely, euphonic tone which makes for an enjoyable toe tapping listen and are seldom fatiguing even with extremely harsh, glassy recordings. The bass is spot on being extended, tight and musical the mids are addictively listenable giving a good insight into minutiae yet never being overly analytical / sterile and treble integrates superbly to make the whole a very satisfying listening experience. Firm recommendation and @ £60 a pair possibly the headphone bargain of the century / or realistically priced compared to the competitions high prices....... whatever your thoughts on headphone pricing your £60 buys you some seriously good 'phones, don't let the price fool you these are up there with the £200 guys

Not exactly a "mod" more of a "rip the stuff out pronto" As far as I can see it's only sellotaped onto the metal grilles for cosmetic reasons.... there's no way that cloth and six strips of sellotape do anything positive for the sonics, no way at all, thing is not only do they sound better with the grille cloth removed they also LOOK a lot better as you can see through the grilles and view the drivers.... Senns and Grados go naked on the grilles I see no reason why Goldring found it necessary to cover up with cloth. 100%, for certain (to my ears) the DR-150 sound a lot better with the grille cloth removed.
Simple to remove..... just pull the earpads outwards slightly until you see the screws (there's 4 of them) remove all of them and then seperate the housing by lifting upward. Grab the grille cloth and pull it out (it'll come away easily seeing it's only held on with sellotape) once it's out put the housing back into position and fire the 4 screws in again to secure it.... don't overtighten, finger tight and then one full turn.

Glad you like them guys. Had mine for a few months and decided to get them modded and keep them as my only pair. For those outside UK, I bought them from Mantra Audio and they shipped mine to Canada for 14 pounds. Here is a pic of my pair :

Steve Tice did the woodwork. The mod wasn't intended to change the sound. As he said, it's a really thin piece of wood he put over the original part. The only thing I see is a little more control on the bass notes. I had to get one part repainted so I'll be able to listen more to these.

Is that the stock cable or a replacement job? Not stock Nigel. That cable enters into both housings (Y cord) whereas the stock cable plugs into the left housing only. Stock cable is designed by QED and is 99.999999% OFC silver plated oxygen free copper (SPOFC) A totally superb cable as it is Some details here man www.goldring.co.uk/headphones/dr150.htm

The quality of the mini to mini stock cable is really nice. I now use it as a mini to mini interconnect when I need it. The sound didn't change that much after the mods, but I'm now set on headphones... Need to find a good amp and dac now. I'm currently using an HPdac and I like it but I might be going to something a little more high end.

thanks for getting back on my questions PinkFloyd appreciate it man. hemos. that look SWEET man , a few questions if I may. Being as its a thin piece of wood placed over the original grills. is there a gap around the edges of the wood ? between the wood and original grill I mean. any idea how the wood piece was mounted to the grills? stapled from the back, some would say nailed. any idea where the [G] used on the wood came from? off the original grills? Painted? so this is the 150? painted black?

the wood panels fit over where the grill used to be. I think it was cut just to cover the hole in the wood. As for the G they were peeled off the original grills. It's just glued onto it.

thanks for getting back mate appreciate it. those sure do look nice so as far as you know the wood is flat then I assume? If you have look inside that is, what secures them to the housing? again, so those are 150's painted black?

I've had mine for a few weeks now and the sound is amazing, not just for the prize. I drive(sorry if that is incorrect english, I'm Swedish)them with my modded B-Tech BT928. The sound from that combo is almost to good to be true. These headphones are a bargain.

The sound from that combo is almost to good to be true. These headphones are a bargain. Have you removed the black grille cloth mayday or are you running them as they came? Mine have just got better and better over the past few weeks and, you're correct, they sound amazing irrespective of the price.... I haven't had any of my other 'phones on my head for weeks now the DR-150 are being used 100% of the time and they continue to please and then some. It's a very intimate, extremely enjoyable listen and very hard to find fault with, I'm loving them and the more they bed into the head the better they become. The headband on my pair is fully extended and that would be my only criticism of the build, if they'd have allowed an extra half inch extension per side it would have been better, there are a couple of cracks in the plastic where I have expanded the 'phones to get them onto my head (and I don't have a HUGE head) fortunately the cracks are on the inner edges of the headband and are not likely to develop to the outer section.... an extra half inch extension per side would avoid this stress on the plastic. As I say though, it's not likely to migrate to the outer span of the headband and is allowing an extra bit of "give" which is welcome. People with heads the size of a medicine ball may want to go with a 'phone that has a bit more expandability though Are you the same Mayday that has been playing about with a B-tech? If so, nice job man.... looks like you've really maxed that amp right out...... nice work

I'm using them as they came. Explain what you removed and how please. Yes I've tuned my B-Tech a bit, more to come though with a stabilized PSU. Thanks for the compliment on it, coming from you that means a lot. Regards, mayday
