the drivers are too close to my ears. i've tried stuffing paper towels between the pads and the driver. while this does raise them off my ears it also make the aomount of pad that contacts my head smaller and harder creating a new type of discomfort.

Probably yes through modifying or replacing the ear pads.
The problem with that is most headphones are very sensitive to earpad shape or composition changes so you may end up with comfy cans that sound nothing like the originals unless you are lucky or choose wisely.
If you post a picture of the cans maybe i can suggest some options

If yours are close to this it looks like ther pads from the Proline 750 may fit if yes it is likely you will gain more comfort without changing the sonic character of the headphones too much since the pads look like an upgrade for the high end versions of the Proline and not a radical change.always good to look to the same company for solutions before going "out of the box"

but still may be way more comfortable. For sure they have a softer touch than the fake leather version that combined with a proper headband adjustment may be enough.
You need to be real careful about changing the actual size and type of the pads unless you don't care for the present sound changing. As an example of how much difference pads can make do a google search on "Grado Pads" and youy will find they all sound different even though the same basic size

bah! i've been fiddling and found that for my cans to sound right they have to seal tight... so bending the band in a no go.
