Picked up a double cd best of compilation today at a very reasonable price on amazon, looking forward to hearing this. Stuart Marconie recent comments influenced me, Ian Dury wasn't new wave he was jazz funk.

Awesome band Nigel! Seen them live on quite a few occasions (both as the blockheads and kilburn and the high roads) one of the most musically talented bands there is. Did you know the Bassist from the Barron Knights is the brother of the bassist in the Blockheads? I was at a Barron Knights concert (one of those sixties spectacular type of things) and met them at the interval and said to the guy on the bass "you remind me very much of the bassist with the blockheads" and he told me he was his brother...... small world eh? Top row..... third photo from the left....... the guy on the right is the brother of the bassist in the Blockheads: www.rock-grotto.co.uk/Barronk.htm

Wasn't Ian from your neck of the woods? Well the smoke anyway. I can recall the Blockheads bassist, he looked like someone out of the Adams Family. Some major bass lines though, Hit Me & Sex & Drugs etc. Did Ian write the lyrics & the rest of the band compose the tunes? Didn't the guitarist compose 'Al No Corrida' the Quincy Jones classic?

Must have seen them more than 10 times. He was brilliant right through to the end - saw the last tour when he knew he hadn't long to live. I have the first 4 albums on vinyl. Must dig them out and try them with my new Ortofon 2M!!
Oh and they were the "tightest" live band I have ever seen bar none.

Great musicians, great lyrics - anyone else think that Dury's vocals were usually placed to low in the mix? I have DIY on vinyl and a 'best of CD' somewhere.

I have a freebie live CD. Not my favourite group but I still use it as a reference because they were just so tight, as mentioned earlier in the thread.

Yes, Ian. That's the one mate.
Looking at the track listing for the "New Boots & Panties" CD, I think, "Reasons to be Cheerful" features about half that album anyway. Always remember when that album was current though, big seller & Stiff's music press promotion. Great cover!

You know Nigel, I had a listen this afternoon. What lovely recordings they were. Clean as a whistle with fantastic clarity.
OK - imaging isn't great given that Ian is singing in a totally different room acoustically and the band are placed back in the mix, but it makes an extremely pleasant listen. I love the sound of the drums in a lot of those recordings. Really natural. I love the bass in 'Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick'.
They sounded very different live!
What a great band. I love Ian's delivery. So unforced on his albums. he was a lot more aggressive live. Almost like the recordings have caught him in a really good mood, but live, he's really gritty and more in yer face.
The BBC banned 'Spasticus Autisticus' because he was making a point about the way disabled people were treated. He's not the only band who had their music banned for 'politically correct' reasons!!! ;D
He regarded himself as two people. His feminine side was the crippled side so he wore makeup and nail varnish on that side and the other side was the aggressive male side!! A complex character.

'Spasticus Autisticus' yes, that had that groove thing as well Released to commemorate the United Nations 1981 year of the disabled. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Year_of_Disabled_PersonsI think the BBC totally mis-read the intended message. My youngest son is disabled & he's lucky in some respect to be growing up in these somewhat more enlightened times. I never saw Ian live but by all accounts both he & the Blockheads were a fantastic live outfit.

They sounded very different live! Yup 100% better "live" than the recordings..... to date, still the most energetic "tight" band I have EVER see live and, IMO, probably the BEST I have ever heard. Totally off topic I was at a "Baron Knights" gig and, in the interval, said to the bassist.... "you look like that guy out of the Blockheads!"....... only turns out the Barron knights guy is his brother ;D New boots and panties is a great introduction into the world of these "class" musicians.... I have a few "bootlegs" of live recordings which I'll be happy to burn for you Nigel.... just give me the nod

He told me. It wasn't flattering. I didn't tell him I was!! ;D 'There 'ain't 'alf some clever bastards' - that makes me laugh. Ian

I am taking the Greatest Hits CD to work today; I haven't played any Dury for a while. And I have just enough time to 'needle drop' DIY and take that with me too.
Expecting a long day today as I am working late until 8:00pm - expect many postings, mostly frivolous, from me.

If I may recommend "Mr. Love pants"..... IMO the best offering from the BlockHeads.... the musicanship is absolutely stunning.... think of "wake up make love to me" on steroids.... it's gooooood Ian's last album before he died but my favourite, the SQ is also pretty darned good. Glad to see this awesome band FINALLY getting the recognition they deserve.
