Mike Care to be a little more explicit about that ? Most people do not realise that high frequency crap from an SMPS can sail straight through a typical internal voltage regulator without being attenuated much at all. Alex Alex, I explain it ALL in my upgrade instructions..... sure, I will "expand" over the next few months here when I have time.... I am too busy"finding time" to do anything at the moment.

Mike Then how about a part number for others that would like to try that with theirs ? I agree with what you are doing, and for the reasons you gave. ;D Obviously, they would be better off using Little Pinkies and ditching their SMPS, but that would give you even less free time ! Alex P.S. Presently I am trying to find a linear 12V 1.5A Regulated PSU , that isn't SMPS, to replace the crappy SMPS supplied with the Western Digital TV Live HD player, but looks like I may have to make my own.

Wow, Alex, you have a Western D media player? Care to share how it's performance in terms of AV? It seems media player, especially AC Ryan, is the in thing now as they are relatively cheap "men' toys" for play play.

Sorry, but I haven't tried it yet into my only monitor with HDMI, which is my PC's 24" monitor. I got it primarily for audio from ripped .wav files on USB pen, although it will certainly get used for that when I get a HDTV . There is more in the Computer section of RG.

Its looking good Mike,
Yes of course i will give my honest opinion, but i am confident it will be great, maybe different, but that is what mods are about getting the best out of a given start point, i know the way you work, and its the same with me, if it ain`t right it don`t go out, simple.
Thank you very much for your time and effort.
Mick.

Sunday 18th April 2010 - MaN227's X-CAN V3 Before: After: Much the same as usual but a couple of differences. I have fitted mylar snubber caps to the UF4007 diodes: in situ Instead of the usual 1000uF output capacitance (to replace the stock 440uF per channel) I have managed to source smaller 1000uF non polar caps (Hitano 105C rated) and have fitted two of these per channel which equates to 2000uF per channel. This is PERFECT for both low and high impedance 'phones giving a cutoff frequency of 2.49Hz for 32 ohm 'phones and 0.27Hz for 300 ohm 'phones. The stock 440uF per channel was better than the 220uF per channel on the V2..... 1000uF was better but 2000uF covers all eventualities. I will be incorporating these 1000uF non polars into all V3 kits from now on.... the physical size is identical to the 220uF stock caps: Pic of them in position: The rest of the "mods" are as per normal.... Panasonic FM / FC, EVOX / Rifa caps..... I have tried ELNA Tonerex in the 100uF position and replaced a few of the ceramic / film caps with WIMA types.... I will listen before reporting back on these. Input caps have been removed and pads jumpered over with copper links, I have also fitted top quality ceramic valve bases. Chaz, I'm pretty bogged down next week so will only be able to put 24 hours on the amp.... when it arrives let it cook for a few days (just play music) before expecting the best.... it will sound superb fresh from the box but give the capacitors a couple of hundred hours to form. A few more pics: I went from Macro to normal mode just so you could see what a lovely day it was here today OK..... the rest are focusing on the amp:

It looks to me like the V-can uses a cap multiplier on the DC input (looking at the pics) this would clean quite a bit of noise up Using low ESR caps on the base of that transistor used as part of the cap multiplier (which Mikes already done) should make it much more effective for the job of cleaning up that HF filth compared to those stock fitted GP caps The advantage of no onboard fb type regulation is that using lots of low ESR caps shouldn't cause any stability problems either which is a bonus Anyway, sorry for sticking me beak in, keep on posting those pics, looking good

Chaz, The V3 has been cooking for 24 hours and sounds eargasmic (as does the HEED) I hope to get both of them shipped back to you at the end of the week. There is a backlog of packages out of the UK at the moment thanks to the volcanic dust from Iceland but flights will hopefully get back to normal within the next few days unless the bastard thing erupts again Mick, I will also ship your V-CAN back at the end of the week.... it's sounding great (a lot nicer than the X-CAN V8P I have just bought!) Mike.

What output connector do you need Alex? I'll be happy to send you a 12VDC Pinkie (in the new style enclosure)...... centre pin positive? Let me know mate and I'll build one up for you..... I'd like you to see one "in the flesh" anyway. Mike.

I'd like you to see one "in the flesh" anyway. Mike. Mike Thanks for the offer, but I suspect that a regulated little Pinkie is going to get far too hot in that size enclosure when working at a constant 1.5A. I have all the bits ready to go, but the amount of heatsinking needed for that kind of continuous current draw means that I need to use a 30VA transformer, and conservatively rate the whole thing for >2A continuous Even with the 2 heatsinks bolted together that I mentioned, they are likely to get hotter than 65C on a summers day.Add to that the heat from the transformer, and it's going to get very warm.I also intend fitting a JLH inside the unventilated plastic case . If only SMPS weren't such dirty products ! Kind Regards Alex P.S. I don't need to see a Little Pinkie in the flesh to know just how good they are. I know what you put in them, and the care you take. I just wish that my stuff looked as good .

Alex, would an small computer chip fan help keep it cool? They provide about 55 cfm and some even have variable speed.

Alex, would an small computer chip fan help keep it cool? They provide about 55 cfm and some even have variable speed. Hi Miguel I have solved my dilemna . I found an aluminium panel to suit a slightly smaller case in my stash. I will use this for the rear panel and fit the heatsinks on it. Although this case is still available, the optional metal front/rear panels will no longer be available for any cases from Altronics or Jaycar. What was left at Altronics were the nice black aluminium panels at half price, so I grabbed 6 of the 8 remaining, as well as the matching case ! Regards Alex P.S. Thanks to Robert for reinforcing my concerns about excessive internal heat with internally mounted heatsinks .

No problem, Mike. You don't need to hurry.
I hope your back is fine again soon. If you have problems with your back over a longer period, you maybe should consider some physiotherapy.
I know quite a few people that have problem with their back and most of them made good results with physiotherapy. I never had problem with my back (hope it keeps that way), but I know it can be absolutely painful.

Will ship V3 and SE Pinkie tomorrow Mike Are you REALLY sufficiently improved at this stage to travel to town? Most people knowing about your severe back problem would not mind a small additional delay. Alex

Alex Hi Alex, I had to go into town today because I had a Doctor's appointment.... it was pretty uncomfortable travelling in on the bus but not too painful He got me on the bed (or whatever it's called) and checked my reflexes (hitting the knee and feet with a hammer).... moved my legs about and generally prodded.... asked me a few questions and then told me I had "Lumbago"...... Reckons 4 to 6 weeks for it to clear up and the best thing to do is "keep moving"..... he prescribed 2 x 50mg of Tramadol (Ultram) four times per day and also ibuprofen gel. The bus ride home was a LOT nicer I popped four of the tramadols as soon as I got them from the chemist and within half an hour I was "floating" What a beautiful feeling, they should give these out to the entire population (Pain or no pain).... a feeling of total calm and and semi orgasmic pulse eminating through the body... fantastic things!! They really got to grip with the pain and I feel a lot better now. Christian, your V3 and Pinkie were shipped today. I will get to work on your V2 this week and hope to ship next Tuesday. Mike.

If anyone is interested there is a seller in HF who has a V2 for sale for $130 USD. I would gladly buy it and ship it to an interested party. Cheers.

That equates to around £82 GBP.... a very good price "if" you live in the States..... what are the internals like Miguel? I have bought a few V2's which are immaculate on the outside but pretty "scorched" inside......
