Been reading here for a while, but this is my first post... (Hello everybody!) I'm trying to find a 3.5mm jack plug with a cable entry/outlet diameter of 8mm, however the biggest I've found so far is a Switchcraft at 6.35mm. I've got some beefy cable I'd like to try in a headphone recable, but I want to terminate it in a mini jack plug as I have yet to find a good quality 1/4"->3.5mm adapter. I thought about terminating in a 1/4" plug and building my own adapter cable, but I would want to use the same cable, so the same problem applies of course. If anyone knows of such a jack plug, please let me know. Oh, I'd like it to have gold plated contacts as well please. Cheers! EDIT: I've just found this connector on the end of a monster cable, which looks like it will accept 2 x 6mm-or-so cables. It's not perfect, but would do, although it doesn't look terribly easy to reuse...

shadesbass I doubt that you will ever find such a connector. The one on the Monster cable would be custom made for them. Not only is this cable quite expensive, but the plug would almost certainly be non reuseable, possibly full of epoxy resin or something as well. Even if you did find such an animal, it is unlikely to be able to be plugged into most headphones. A normal 3.5mm plug will not fit into many headphones. Try one ! SandyK
BTW, one of those cables would be very nice in many soundcard to headphone amplifier applications.

Hi sandyk, Thanks for your response. I'm prepared to pay $30 for a cable if I can use the 3.5mm jack off the end, but like you say, I'm not sure that the Monster jack would be re-usable. I think you maybe misunderstood - the 3.5mm jack is for the opposite end of the cable to the headphones. I'll be hard-wiring the cable to the headphones, but I want to use them with my portable headphone amp, which has a 3.5mm jack socket. I'm beginning to agree with you though, it's looking very unlikely that I'll be able to find such a connector. I'll probably try drilling out the Switchcraft one I mentioned above ( linky), as it's worth a shot.

shadesbass I doubt that you will be able to enlarge the entry enough without destroying the plug. You may have to use something like heatshrink to slip over the terminations, but it will look a bit messy though. SandyK

Yeah, I doubt I could get the outlet neatly up to 8mm on a switchcraft/Neutrik plug, if at all. I was willing to give it a go though. However, I've just found these (order code 306-078-400) from VDC, which will accept 7mm OD cables (getting closer!) Whilst it's not gold plated, it might be possible to drill out the extra 1mm required and do away with the strain relief provided. I have one on order, so we'll see... If that doesn't work, then I think my determination will have run out by that point, and I'll just use a 1/4" jack!

Yeah, that's the same Switchcraft I linked to above. I was hoping to avoid using heatshrink at that end, but I think it will be inevitable if I have to take a drill to the jack plug.
Of, course, the cable might sound awful, in which case all that effort will have been in vain. Maybe I should try it with a 1/4" jack first...
