Mike Let's put this all into context. You have reviewed MANY headphone amplifiers, so off the top of your head, which would be the ones that impressed you most ? Quite funny, I started off with an X-CAN V2 and have come round full circle and find myself enjoying it more than most amps I have tried. Get it right (with caps, valves and PSU) and this little puppy can really sing a very sweet tune.

My word that is extremely good value considering all the components are included.

Mike With your extensive stock of ICs and other quality components, combined with your flair for modifications, you should be able to make it really sing ! As you already know, the problem with most DIY designs is the lack of a PCB to get you started, then sourcing all the other bits from different suppliers.

Alex I'm really looking forward to this one Alex and for £8 (in this day and age) it's pretty incredible that all the parts come with it. Of course I will experiment with various capacitors, opamps and resistors...... I've got a couple of 100R non inductive Reidons for the PSU sitting here staring me in the face! Yeh, this will be fun and if it sounds good then possibly one of the best audio bargains out there? If all goes to plan on Thursday I'll go onto audiokit.it and order a nice Galaxy enclosure to house everything in..... cheers Alex!

Bloody hell! I'm tempted for that price you'd be struggling to build something from scratch for that

I keep telling you guys, that for general electronic components and kits, we are spoilt Downunder ! We have 11 Jaycar stores in Sydney, 1 Altronics (more amplifier kits , as well as general) then there is Farnell, and RS Components, with their <AU$12 next day delivery. So do you wonder why there are more active DIYers in Oz ? SandyK

If only we had some ready made JLH PCBs to go with it ! That's where quite a bit of the ultimate SQ after modification, comes from. Don't forget that in the choke free version, you can fiddle with the output resistor value to better match your most used headphones. Alex

Hey Alex, just need a JLH inbetween the regged supply and headphone amp, swap out those output transistors to those 2SC/2SA types, stick in a few nice caps, I bet it would make a rather good amp! not just cheap but good performance Edit, Alex beat me to it

Leo As you described, it is now markedly better sounding than Graham Slee's "Voyager" (shit, I forgot I wasn't supposed to mention his name ! ) on decent material from the PC's modded X-FI soundcard, then into Sony MDR-CD780 headphones. The low end "authority" is awesome. The JLH , I believe, is a big contributor to that. Alex BTW, the Sony headphones are several dB less sensitive than the ATH W1000.

Some outfit this is! (Jaycar) I called them up to see where my amp kit is and the recorded voice tells me I am calling out of business hours..... Obviously I will have to phone at 3am in the morning as the order line operates out of Australia! Blimey, you'd think they would have a UK helpline?

Champing at the bit, Mike ? It's only been 4 days! They haven't been advertising for very long in the U.K. magazines, so there probably isn't enough U.K. and USA demand for their stuff yet ,to warrant paying for a local office. They do now have N.Z. stores, so I guess if the demand is there, they will expand. FWIW, I bought that ETI Mosfet amp kit that was shown in a photo some time back, from the original store in Sussex St. Sydney. It had just been bought out by Garry Johnston, and was Jonathon Carr and Son. They now have >47 stores ,and >100 stockists and agents throughout Australia and N.Z. Alex

"only" 4 days? I order from Rapid I get the goods the next day, same with RS, same with JPR etc. etc. I didn't realise these kits would be coming from AUSTRALIA..... I assumed they would have had a distribution warehouse in the UK. Now I know I'm cool with it and will wait...... I certainly won't be calling them in the early hours of the morning. "gooday Jaycar here how can I help you?" " where's me fckin' headphone amp kit"? "Relax, grab a tinny it'll be with you in 5 weeks" " five fckin' weeks?? where's it coming from.... Australia??" "yes"

I think it was Margaret Thatcher. There was a huge influx of Australians into the UK when she was in power. Her "this Lady is not for turning" speech was incorrectly interpreted by the Australians as meaning " one will not tolerate turds that flush down anti-clockwise, I propose to introduce a universal clockwise turd disposal system" the rest, as they say, is history. (the Australians refer to it as her "this lady is not for turding" speech. Blame Thatcher, I blame her for everything. No. The "joint" is full of descendants of convicts who were shipped to an "Island" many many moons ago.... where do you think you are Rick.... Butlins? You gotta watch your back here mate, they'd be off with the carpet if it wasn't nailed down
