Hi Rickmonster, I know you quite like my old circa 1987 HFN-009 Headcase so I took a few fresh pictures for you I've removed the 6 x 10V 1000uF caps and replaced with 2 x 25V 3300uF and 2 x 35V 2200uF. Cleaned the original ALPS pot and refitted it in place of the ALPS RK27. Fired a ferrite ring on @ the mains inlet. OPA-2107 onboard. DC offset L/H 3mV R/H 186mV so the 1000uF Non polar output caps are remaining in situ until I can get the R/H offset down to <5mV I've ordered some new transistors so will mess about with them on the R/H channel until I can get something a lot less than 186mV and will then whip the output caps out altogether. You know Rick, it doesn't look anything great but my god it sounds it! I can honestly say "balls", "depth", "grunt", "slam", "dynamics"...... it's such a "BIG" sounding amp if you catch my drift? Resolution, especially @ low volume levels, is absolutely spot on and the soundstage is incredibly wide for a headphone amp. BD131, BD132 run as cool as a cucumber and, if you're interested, 6 volts seems to be the max voltage @ any part of the circuit so this is even less than some of the mini battery powered amps we see.....even though, it sounds just spot on in all departments. Anyways, thought I'd keep you updated and here are some fresh pics

Very cool mike and yes,I like the amp a lot because it is a correct amp. By corect I mean no fad circuitry just to do it,no "color coded" pretty parts,no fancy overdone circuit board but pure intelligent design geared to end performance-as it should be. Consider a reviewer having that puppy on the bench then opening it up to see the porn and then imagine the dismay when he sees that ! From that point on everything he hears will be "colored" by the visual and I beleive would make for a very piss poor review. Take that same amp and reviewer but with the amp behind a box where the review had to be done strictly on the merits and likely the am would have an entirely different opinion and THAT is why audio gear sucks more often than not.audio gear needs to have a certain "look" or it is dismissed out of hand and as you know i have contended for years I could take two identical amps, box them in separate enclosures with one having all the flash and dash one could want while the other in a standard "Utility Box" and without opening up the chassis the better looking one WILL be proclaimed to be the better sounding amp ! Of this I have zero doubt at all and will one day pop in to an audio meet and prove it just because I am a real-life prick You perform a service Mikester, exposing passed over amps for the true music machines they are at 1/2 the cost of the pretty competition and also keeping the UK amps active in forums that seemingly want to only talk about DIYFP amps, ultra expensive crapola (could be made and sold at 1/3 the price) or whatever cheap "mystery amps" are coming out of China where again the circuits mostly such major wood but because they see what the market truly is "oooh ! looks good ! I bet it sounds good too !" spend 90% of the design stage on cosmetics. Audio sanity check Mikester ! That s the above amp Rickasaurus Rex
