No,absolutely not ! Every single step farther away from class-A is just a way to reduce cost by both making the amp run more efficient and run at reduced heat allowing for higher density multifunction pc board layouts in cell phones, boom boxes, receivers.etc, not for any SQ gains no matter what they tell you. a simple head to head with a quality source would leave zero doubt what is the better way even though some knucklhead will show you graphs PROVING they are equal. The same crew who will tell you any amp with 0.001 % THD WILL sound better than one with 0.1%THD every time no matter what your ears tell you and why so many folks are always upgrading instead of enjoying-they listen to hype instead of music spec whores are dangerous creatures with an insatiable appetitie for susceptable human prey

Regardless of the relative merits of each deign philosiphy, I thought these looked interesting: 6moons.com/audioreviews/eone2/1000.htmlTiny 500 watt per channel amps using switching power supplies, not that I really understand what that means, but the green side of me likes the idea of such a power efficient design. 6moons seem to think very highly of the noises they make too. I rather like the unfussy design and compact dimensions; similar to my existing and equally diminutive Cyrus equipment. Bel Canto also have a USB enable DAC and pre amp in the pipeline too: www.belcantodesign.com/prod_DAC3.html. It would seem that home "Hi-Fi" manufacturers are as well as the DIY and pro audio manufacturers are beginning to include the option.

Bel Canto have some designs that are technically cutting edge but are a love it or hate it thing (as in their DAC design choices) when the sonics are the measure. Those who like Class-A sound, low or zero oversampling DACs with a minimalist IV/filter stage, triode gear, vinyl playback systems and horns would mostly take a pass. those who think digital is the be all end all source and who choose satellite radio over FM radio on the SQ merits alone, that like low efficiency speakers requiring gobs of PP amplifier power and high damping factors, whos idea of recording an event is always in the digital domain, who like their headphone amps to have an "etched" sound would love such a thing and even proclaim it the next revoluton/evolution in audio (like the perfecxt music forever CDS that is still in the "tweak" stage) Thing is,these types usually have the most lost puppy look imaginable when they actually get to hear a system that plays music instead of playing the electronics because all their reconceptions are shattered in a single swoop and when it dawns on them how much loot and how long a time they have wasted pursuing the wrong thing the results are not pretty ! Organic over electronic, flesh and blood over plastic and steel, sensual over sterile, toe tapping over anylitical is my goal though i too once followed the SOTA Audio designs into my own personal audio hell (just kidding you man,it is my nature to and i let no oppurtunity pass lightly )
