I ordered some 50K dual log pots the other day and got these by mistake: The company told me to "bin them" and they didn't know what they were as they had been bagged up wrong. I've done a bit of snooping and the closest I can come up with is ALPS EC11B Series Metal Shaft Rotary Encoder www.potentiometer.com/alpsencoder.cfmSeems to have a push switch shaft (push and it clicks) and 30 positions (30 clicks) on the rotation. I sure as hell won't be throwing these in the bin but what to use them for?

The color is right to be an Alps but dual log it is not, just not enough pins.
I would use an ohm meter to get the value and taper (smooth would be linear,a sudden JUMP in resistance log) then measure the other mounting pins to see if they are a "tap" or just mounting tabs.
if they ARE single section pots then your options for end use will be limited but if you want a suggestion then if they are linear pots would make for a nice balance control somewhere and if log level "trims" so maybe an external "input interface" box for a CD or DVD player where you can level match to other sources (hook the pots up as rheostts maybe) with a dedicated balance control, something I can not understand being so lacking in a headphone amp where L/R balance is essential for a good image

Seems to be the encoder I pointed to in the previous thread Rick:
The EC11B encoder is a compact and highly reliable, sliding contact type. Available from ALPS, a comprehensive manufacturer of electronic components, it has a 4.5mm body height with the option of a 0.5mm push-on switch. The product is suitable for level controls for car audio and navigation systems and controls for image and sound devices including DVD and CD players.
Features & benefits Horizontal and vertical types available Varieties of length and shaft styles A choice of 15 pulse/30 detent and 20 pulse/20 detent Incremental type Operating life = 15,000 cycles
That's the one.

Jeez Mike,I must be friggin blind because not only did I not see any mention of encoder (failed the evelyn woods speed reading course-some will get that ) but I did not see it flipping through my "print copy" Alps Product Catalog. the bad news is there is likely not much use for the part but the good news is it has LEAD so run to the back yard and bury it before July 1

I was thinking more along the lines of bury the fking thing then a year from now dig it up,do soil samples, record the results
THEN do samples around the average garbage can and record those and when the evidence is clear start a campaign to BAN ALL GARBAGE in the EU so no one can throw anything away EVER which will cause the manufacture of quality goods instead of the crap we now have to choose from.
you gotta think outta the box man............
