Hi All I am slowly getting sorted on the modifications I will do to my X-Cans V2 and am trying, at the moment, to source what I need. While I'm at it I'd like to give my X-Pre a make-over as well and hopefully not the kiss of death. Has anyone out there modified the X-Pre and are happy to share their experiences? What's in the X-Pre, where do I begin and what do I need? Thank you David

I would think that it's more of the same. Change the caps, the volume pot etc.................The X-pre never had many friends. Not sure why.Maybe it was far to simple.Maybe if it was too good, MF would not have sold pre-amps like Nu-Vista for 10 times the cost. Anyway, changing the caps for FC or FM Panasonics will help.

A bit of a shame it didn't have too many friends. My MF X-Pre runs two (2) Meridian Mono Blocks and I quite like the sound. However, I will work to improve it if I can. So for the next improvement - Is any one able to tell me of a replacement for the input selector? I have ordered the Alps recommended in the upgrade for the X-Can volume control and a match for the input selector would be a good idea. I use more than one (1) source into the pre-amp so four (4) positions would be best. Also hope the volume control on the X-Pre is the same as the X-Can V2. Thanks as always.

Ah.........Quick word of warning. If the volume pot on the X-pre is say a 50K type then it's best to also use a 50K type.If you use say a 20K or a 10K,then you will not get the same volume out of the X-pre to drive the power amps. If however you found that the existing pot was too sensitive, i.e. by the time it got to 9 O'clock position it was too loud, then actually a 20K would be better. Just if you do change it be prepared for a differance. And get a new knob as well.RS do a load of ones to fit a 6mm shaft. All are better than the MF plastic one that it comes with. As I said before I'd do the capacitors and the pot to start with, and then look at some other tubes.
