I have been a "clean shaven" man for all of my life but recently have started missing the occasional shave. The past 5 days I haven't bothered shaving at all and there's a good 5mm of growth sprouting out of my face. It looks awful, like an old school tramp, but it feels warm and comfy. Two of my mates reckon it makes me look like a dosser and the other two reckon I'm a dosser already so it doesn't really matter By the way... I have "four" mates, I'm quite chuffed with that I don't give a f**k what anybody thinks of my appearance..... my main objective, this winter, is keeping warm and if that can be achieved by letting facial hair grow then let's go for it! The thing is.... there is always a downside and I'd like feedback from clean shaven / bearded gents alike. The downside to clean shaven I already know..... time consuming, daily routine, expensive blades, the occasional ingrown hair, shaving gel costs..... essentially, I find myself spending more time shaving my face than I do "living" these days. Soooooo...... I'd like to know the pros and cons of shaving / or not from both sides of the camp...... what are the advantages / disadvantages of both? The biggest advantages I have found in the past 5 days are: 1: I haven't wasted time shaving 2: I have spent no money on shaving products 3: My face feels warmer outdoors Disadvantages? 1: I "apparantly" look like and old school vagrant 2: I "apparantly" look 10 years older. At the end of the day....... I am enjoying the face insulation, it doesn't matter how old I look (I'm not trying to bed a 19 year old) and I am saving money. Why have I been shaving for 55 years??!

When I grow mine, it sprouts in three different colours and four different directions. I quite like it short, because after about ten days, it starts to itch like a bastard and has to come off or be drastically shortened. When it gets past about five days, it's too long to cut with a razor, so I have to use my electric clippers on it first. One other problem I have is that on my right jaw, I have a patch about one inch in diameter that is practically bald, like the back of my nut. I've grown to disliking shaving as I've got older. It just seems like a total waste of time, so I've got into the habit of leaving it until the itch is unbearable, then using the electric clippers on it, which only takes a minute, so now I always have stubble. Luckily I work for myself, so don't have to look smart for anyone!

Funnily enough, mine isn't itching Alex..... it looks a bit grubby (like a proper old school tramp) and is grey and black but no itching yet What type of electric clipper do you use? I have one of those Wahl things for doing my head but not too sure if it would be good enough for beard duty. This thing looks OK and has a built in hoover too www.philips.co.uk/c-p/BT7202_13/beardtrimmer-series-7000-vacuum-beard-trimmer

I had a goatee up until a couple of years ago but with small children and all that jazz I just couldn't be arsed with shaving any more. Bought a set of Philips rechargeable beard trimmers for around 20 quid in Sainsburys and just use them to keep it short, I trim it back weekly otherwise it starts to itch as already mentioned by axel365. I think the 'look' suits me reasonably well, and I think I'm right in saying I'm fairly like you Mike - not much growing up on top, just the ridges that seem to grow on the back and sides that need regular trimming to avoid looking (I.M.O) silly!

I was in the post office today and Wendy, Jade, Dianne, Alana AND Anne reckoned I looked like a vagrant. Nice girls, I always get the crack with them, BUT have never been likened to a vagrant before They all say it as it is (as do I!) and I would like to stand my ground on this one BUT.......... erm, a grey beard is not a good look, I agree. The bald head with the side hair is also NOT a good look and my WAHL (on a 3mm cut) takes care of that / followed up with a 5 blade razor for the full Kojak. This must be about day 10 now, PLENTY of facial hair BUT most definitely looking like an old school tramp..... any chance I may have had with a younger female has now gone..... Kayleigh, in the Co-Op, asked me how old I was this afternoon (whilst I was perusing the reduced section)....... I told her I was "55".... she was like "55? you're older than my Dad!"........ I followed through with "How old did you think I was?" she replied "A lot younger than you looked before you grew that thing!". Sods law....nobody shows interest when you're clean shaven..... the minute you sport a grey beard they all tell you how young you ONCE looked and how shocked they are to discover your true age. It's going to be a Gillete proglide fusion at dawn shave down.....

I grew a beard in the 80s to make me look older. Now it's a grey beard and I wouldn't dare. A beard these days makes me look like I'm waiting for a visit from Social Services so I can be given a bath.

I can dye the beard.
