Phil Tanny pretty much says what I have been saying for the last 14 years: "Having used forums almost daily for 20 years, my vote is not dead, but slowly dying. The main problem, as I see it, is the "almost anybody can join and say almost anything" publishing model used on almost all forums. Such an open publishing model is to be applauded for it's democratic inclusiveness, but the end result is almost always an ever lower signal to noise ratio. The best posters get bored and wander off and are replaced by ever less interesting posters, a process which seems to accelerate as it progresses. The problem is not forum software, but this "almost anything goes" publishing model. To revive the forum realm this model should be replaced on at least some forums with might be called the "magazine model", that is, anybody can submit an article, but only some are published. However, having made this pitch on dozens of forums for more than a decade, I am sad to report it is wildly unpopular. Thus, I expect the forum realm to continue to degrade until finally even the least articulate members get bored with each other and the forum owners weary of babysitting them and throw in the towel." He saved me a lot of typing

I disagree. Forums can be excellent, but need hands-on management. You have to get rid of trolls first thing, no matter if they're your cousin or they give you money. You have to get rid of the slugs and mental defectives, or shove them into a blog where that's the only place they can post, and nobody looks there. Any of these observations can apply to me in a negative way, but as you are aware, this is no time to put on a happy/false face. I've been participating in many, many forums, and some clearly rise above the rest. This forum here needs tech people and musicians - a very volatile mix, many of whom could talk to you endlessly, but to each other it's like WW3. I'd say if you get onto a resurgeance of members and posting, number one rule above all others (for members you want to keep) is no fighting, and **most important**, never blame the victim of trolling. Trolls will go away and be forgotten, but victims can be troublesome. Probably the worst forum I've ever seen is head-case, populated by the worst mix of $50 assassins, trolls, and black-bag operators I've ever known. Just the worst. You could never be that bad.
